I was there for his 4000th strikeout. He was the first to reach that mark.

Peter Ueberroth, who was commissioner of baseball at the time, was also in attendance at that game and happened, at one point, to walk very close to where I was. When I saw him, I made a point of informing him, at a distance, of my opinion of the designated hitter. For some reason the people I was with thought I was being impolite. I can't imagine why.

And the man could still pitch better than over half the major league pitchers today.

Announcers soil themselves telling everyone how great Roger Clemens is these days---Clemens doesn't have anything on Ryan, on an individual basis. Clemens has just whored himself out for the last decade to "try to win another championship".

    Nolan Ryan is the man.

I remember when he pitched his 7th no-hitter at age 40! Fucking insane. Best pitcher I've ever got to witness (not in-person). Considering how much baseball had already tilted to favor hitting when he was playing, he will definitely be considered one of the best if not the best pitcher of all time. Right now, there isn't one pitcher out there who could even come close to measuring up to him.
