I thought I read in a recent article that Phoenix had surpassed Philadelphia as the 5th largest city in America? I don't recall if Atlanta or Houston was #4 (after LA, NYC, and Chicago, natch), but I know Detroit wasn't in the top 5. When are these figures from? When I heard them, I thought it was ridiculous for major acts to bypass Arizona completely.

As for my upcoming concerts:

9/20 - Muse

And apparently Of Montreal's playing the Rialto Theatre in November, which I'll have to buy tickets for.

I am telling you, it is all about the venues not the size of the city. Why else did Radiohead go to New Orleans which in 2003 had a city proper size of 400k
vs. Phoenix which city proper wise had 1.3 million at the time. Another problem Las Vegas has is that they charge bands a arm and a leg to perform there. When Sigur Ros played at the Hard Rock in 2005, the venue there wanted to collect a larger fee for all t-shirts sold, so in protest Sigur Ros sold all their shirts for a $1 so the venue wouldn't get any revenue off of them. They felt it was unfair to the fans because they would have to charge more per shirt to get what the hard rock was asking...When Pretty Girls Make Graves play last in Las Vegas they stated it would be the last time they played their because they simply couldn't afford it..

The City of Phoenix is the fifth largest city but the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan area is only the 13th largest Metropolitan area. And it would be the number of people (fans, actually) within a traversable distance which means it's the Metro area that matters, not the city.

Part of the reason for the disparity is that Phoenix is the 10th largest city in the US by land area; the City of Phoenix could easily've been several contiguous cities which would leave the metro area still 13th but drop Phoenix to somewhere in the teens and make it so I lived in the City of Deer Valley or something.


But I think TCHY has a good point; if Bjork wants to play outside then Phoenix probably isn't the best place for her. The heat won't be so bad come the end of September/beginning of October but she's too big for Mesa Amp and, I think, too small for Cricket. And Glendale Arena doesn't have a retractable roof. Maybe they should get on that.

No, I think you misunderstood. Bjork likes to perfrom outside but she also like old theater venues. And I wasn't sure what they had in Phoenix. Though the Mesa would fit her. She is playing in venues around that sizes now.

She stated in quite a few interviews that she prefers the outdoors because and I quote "It gets me close to nature". But like I say she also likes playing in theaters (Hence: Radio City Music Hall, Fox Theater Detroit).

EDIT: I just saw what the Dodge looked like and it is not so bad. But not a Theater like the Fox in Detroit.

That would fit her! She just played a 1200 person theater in Spain last night..it was breathe taking from what I hear..

EDIT: Just saw pictures of it and yeah that is more up her alley. Maybe she will finally play in Phoenix just keep hoping.

Radio City Music Hall and Fox Theatre both have more than 5000 seats. Based on those I can't imagine the Orpheum being considered.

Maybe a Bjork crowd could fit in Gammage (just over 3000); maybe she'd would like it. It was a FLW design and is over 40 years old. Eh? Eh?

The Orpheum is older. And cooler inside, I'll give you that.

I'd much rather she play the Orpheum. But I'd rather buy the tickets for Gammage, I'm guessing.
