Default I Do Not Think This Would Happen @ Coachella

Did anyone else read about this over the weekend?

FLAMING LIPS NOT ALLOWED TO TREAT HOT, EXHAUSTED FANS

Headlining on Saturday were The Flaming Lips, which saw front man Wayne Coyne appearing inside his trademark plastic bubble. Seeing a large number of fans already awaiting their arrival, the band set up and attempted to begin their set nearly an hour early with a cover of Black Sabbath's 'War Pigs', but were stopped halfway through the song by festival organizers until their allotted performance time. The band sat just off stage for 55 minutes until they were told they could start playing again.

I'm sorry, but I think that is very lame.

Yeah that sucks. But I could see how some fans could get pissed if they showed up to the stage at the designated time to find out they had already been playing for an hour. That would kinda piss me off.

I read that someone passed away (nothing to do with Flaming Lips).

Your right. People at this year's outdoor stage would have appreciated bands starting early far better than showing up on time and wait 20-40 minutes for the band to start. What was the deal anyways? Did an explanation ever get posted on what happened?

I dunno, at Bonnaroo there are so few conflicts scheduled against the main bands I can see why it might be silly to not let them go on early, but at Coachella I can imagine fans being really pissed off if they missed an hour of one of their favorite acts because they went on early while they were hanging out in Sahara or whatevs.

    And they covered War Pigs!?!?

Yes they actual had War Pigs and Knives Out scheduled in their setlist - or so I'm told, and yes they would've done an extended set.

If a band wanted to go early - who cares, gives them more time to do what they do, and people getting therer at the scheduled time wouldn't be the wiser I guess.

Thats so stupid!!! You think The Roo of all places would allow this kind of thing, I thought they were the very fan friendly festival, not time nazis. And yes Ornette Coleman PASSED OUT during his set. I wouldve loved to have heard Knives Out.

The reason why this would never happen at Coachella is because you don't have that kind of downtime between bands. Everything is packed in.

Well, hardly any bands play their best songs nowadays. Worst fad ever. Besides, the fact is nobody would have had the right to complain about them going on an hour early as long as the Flaming Lips ended at the same time. So if they played from 12-3 instead of 1-3, no harm done, because the people showing up at 1am still get the two hours they expected. And everyone else gets an extra treat.

They've been covering War Pigs for awhile now. When I saw them in 05 they covered War Pigs and Bohemian Rhapsod, when is saw them in 06 they just covered War Pigs.

This is a serious misrepresentation. The reason there was a gap is because the Flaming Lips were playing a late night show starting at 3 AM after the headling Police finished there 3 hour set that started at the same time Coachella end for the night. Bonnaroos stages are as tightly booked as Coachella from 12-12.

    I hate hippies.

Seriously though I live in Ohio, the Roo is much easier (and tons cheaper) for me, yet COACHELLA is my festival of choice - I've never missed it - I've been to 2 Roos.

These are the only people who can make a fair statement, the people who have been to both.

Like I said you're the first I've heard say it and I take your opinions in regards to Coachella with a grain of salt seeing as how your convictions about it are so strong that you think this would've happened there. I seriously doubt Coachellas stage managers would've allowed an act to start their set an hour early.

I went to both this year and I liked certain things about each festival. To me the line-ups were both great. I saw a lot of bands that I didn't know much about at both places, but I actually thought Bonnaroo was better. I felt the artist lineups were comparible in terms of diversity. The main reasons I felt Bonnaroo was better are as follows:

    1. You can go to and from you campsite as you please.
    2. In my opinion the sound as Bonnaroo blew Coachellas away. As far as the main stage goes, there is no comparison. Superfly bought the grounds that Bonnaroo is held on and you can tell they are pumping a ton of money into it. The main stage sound was crystal clear from the front(where I was for Tool) all the way to the back (where I was for the Police).
    3. You don't have to stay in the beer garden if you want to drink.
    4. The music goes until 4 am. On Friday, STS9, String Cheese, and Superjam(which was Ben Harper, John Paul Jones, and Quest Luv) all played a 12 - 3 am set. On Saturday the Flaming Lips played at the same time.

This just 1 person's opinion, but as far as this year goes, Bonnaroo was better.

I was at both festivals this year and have been to both in previous years....

As my friends and I started walking up to the festival to see the flaming lips, we heard "war pigs". We assumed it was a separate band playing and thought nothing of it till all the pissed off lips fans told us what happened.

Both festivals are great for both reasons. Lets not forget that both festivals are a GREAT time. One does not have to be better than the other.

PeyoteKid, you forgot to mention that DJ Shadow played till after 5 am. Also that Sasha n Digweed played till almost 8 am in a tent similar to the sahara.

"Bonnaroo In Full Swing Despite Friday Fatality"
New information about the first Bonnaroo fatality slowly became available on Saturday.

Authorities in Coffee County say Cody Conover, 25, was the man who died at the annual music festival in Manchester on Friday.

Conover was visiting the festival from Lancaster, Kentucky.

Officials say he was taken from his campground site on Friday after his friends notified Bonnarooís emergency medical staff.

Conover was rushed to United Medical Regional Center in Manchester where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Conoverís body was transported to Nashville where the Medical Examiner will conduct and autopsy to...

...determine the cause of the 25 year oldís death.

Officials say there were no reports of medical problems for Conover and there were no visible signs of trauma.

Conoverís parents were notified and were on their way to Nashville Saturday morning.

This is the first reported death for this yearís Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Conoverís death is the sixth reported fatality in the festivalís six year history.

Saturday Bonnarroo was in full swing with the highlight of Saturdayís performances being The Police.

This was the bandís first time to play together in 23 years. TheWhite Stripes are scheduled to play on Sunday which is the last night of the festival.
