Help Caco out and get a special thanks

So I'm heading up one of the teams for the international 48hrs comp. I was telling one of the board members about it and he offered to throw some money in and I got the idea to make this thread while chatting with that person. If you don't know what the comp is about ill explain to you. On July 27th at 6:45pm i stick my hand in a hat and pick my genre of film. At 7pm on the 27th I have to open an envelope that has my logline. Many years ago I did this and got "Sally goes to an antique shop and finds a watch that reminds her of her grandmother" I just have to use that idea. We ended up making a dark film about Sally having the watch and it reminds her of her grandmother sexually abusing her. Yeah I know its a dumb thing to do for a comp but we were in film school and wanted to make the whole film in one shot while showing the passage of time. We actually pulled it off but lost. I've learn for shit like this you have to be commerical, so I wont be doing any people raping other people.

I got my first sponsor today that is giving me 300 bucks, now I need about 1700 bucks more to feel comfortable without having to pull out the credit cards.

So for any board member that paypals me at least $25 dollars you will get a special thanks and a dvd. If you throw in at least $100 bucks you will get a title credit "bugonyourlips presents so and so film" and the dvd. Cool?? Great thanks in advance for all people willing to help out. To those that can't spare 25 bucks I understand.

well if i win for the city of miami i get to go on to the national comp....winner of miami gets an avid system and some other shit.....if i win national i get about 50grand....if i win international i get 100grand i think.

then they try to sell it on channels like sundance, i get 80% of profits they get 20% but if its that good ill take it to sundance myself or slamdance since i have friends that work on the board that choose films at both festivals

2000$ for a 48 hour film shoot? are you fucking kidding me? Are you shooting on film caco? that's the only justification for you (or anyone else) throwing money away on one of these things. I've done these before, and they are valuable learning experiences, but there is no reason to be soliciting money from people.

EDIT: generally when you ask for money you at least throw a budget out for people to check out. even if it is vague.

of course it has value. but, particularly on the internet, you should be prepared to give reasons for asking for money. Like I said, if Caco is shooting on film, that's more than a reason. Otherwise, it's really easy to pull these things together in a well-executed manner without asking people for cash. These events are awesome opportunities for people from all kinds of film backgrounds to bring their skills/equipment to the mix without needing money.

he went to film school. he has contacts that are into this kind of thing and people he can solicit to help out.

maybe I'm naive about the LA area. but up here, for events like this people (friends and otherwise) tend to love to get together for free and bring what they can to the dynamic.

I don't know anyone with a steadicam though. Or professional editing equipment. And I know a lot of people. Wouldn't you likely have to rent a lot of that stuff or at least the post production studio? Sounds pricey.
