    Default CREATE A FESTIVAL - ROUND 4 - SEMIFINALS - MUSIC AT THE GATES VS. CITY SCAPE FESTIVAL

    Round 4 - Semifinals - Music at the Gates vs. City Scape Festival

    Who would of thought this semifinal match-up would of came down to two festivals that were in the original round 1 wild card round? Both these festivals have survived an extra match that other festivals did not, so good luck to both.

    The semi-finals are upon us, where the cream of the crop face off to get to that elusive final match up for the grand prize. This round is going to work just like round 3 did (with the set times and all) but now will last 5 days instead of 4. Remember, this vote is very important, as you are deciding who you think should be making into the final match up. So before you go clicking, take a nice deep look over the lineup, pick your favorites, look over the set times, determine your must sees and conflicts, and take some time to explore the 'little' bands (and tak e whatever else you want into account as well).

    Remember, no voting if you're an alias (or suspected to be) and/or if you have less than 100 posts...they won't count, so don't even waste your time.

    WINNER MOVES ONTO THE FINALS!

    (it should be noted that Music at the Gates did 'cheat' - though not on purpose - by having Outkast and the Arcade Fire on the same day - as well as only having 19 bands both on friday and sunday)

    Music at the Gates is good, however there are too many conflicts.

    Cityscape has Orbital.

    Also, I can go from Mos Def, to The Knife, to Basement Jaxx.

    Cityscape has my vote, mainly because of less conflicts

    Yeah...conflicts are a bitch at Music at the Gates. Still, it's a tough decision, and hard to vote against Bowie. However, Saturday and Sunday would be beautiful at Cityscape.

    Saturday, I'd catch The National, Electric President, and then haul ass over to Victoria Stage and hopefully catch some of Mr. Lif. After that, I wouldn't stray from Victoria Stage except to refill my beer and empty my bladder.

    Sunday would be start to finish at Bakerloo (I'm willing to miss The Knife to see Peter Gabriel), and hopefully I'd be able to catch at least a little of the Basement Jaxx set once PG is done.

    Conflicts keep me from planning my perfect day at Music At The Gates.

    I'm just going to establish day-by-day calenders of each event and then judge from there:

    Music at the Gates:
    *NOTE: Excel spreadsheet form is ugly, yet displays conflicts more easily*

    ~Friday~
    - Show up around 3:00pm
    - Modest Mouse, full-set
    - Muse full-set
    - Get something to eat, hopefully overhear the middle of Mogwai's set
    - Underworld, 7:30-8:30pm
    - Wander over to the Summerstage
    - Fiona Apple, full-set
    - Wander back over to the Great Lawn
    - Watch remainder of David Bowie's set
    *NOTE: Mogwai and Dangerdoom conflicts are LAME*

    ~Saturday~
    - Show up around 1:30pm
    - Zero 7, full-set
    - Arcade Fire, full-set
    - Literally run out, get something to eat, run back
    - Daft Punk, 7:30-9pm
    - Primus, 9:15-10:15pm
    - Dresden Dolls, full-set
    *NOTE: Getting lost in the shuffle of Daft Punk -> Primus -> Dresden Dolls could be distressing...*

    ~Sunday~
    - Show up... jesus... around 4pm?
    - The New Pornographers, 4:30-5:15pm
    - Broken Social Scene, 5:30-6:30pm
    - Doves, 7-7:30pm/Get something to eat...
    - PJ Harvey, full-set
    - Radiohead, full-set
    *NOTE: Doves/PJ Harvey conflict is shitty... No alternatives to Radiohead just rubs me wrong. And before you say it, Basement Jaxx(ESPECIALLY conflicting with PJ) is no real alternative for me...*

    Cityscape:
    *NOTE: While not as neatly layed out, it looks like the Cityscape set times sheet actually took more than an iota of effort to crank out*

    ~Friday~
    - Show up around 1:30pm
    - The New Pornographers, 2:10-3pm
    - Pinback, full-set
    - Get something to eat, watch the end of Self's set
    - Jimmy Eat World, full-set
    - Franz Ferdinand, full-set
    - Gorillaz (who wouldn't even be setup by then), 9/9:30-11:30pm
    *NOTE: While I've picked them twice as bands to see first, New Porn isn't like... a really important band to me, and nothing snags me at first about Friday's lineup until Pinback*

    ~Saturday~
    - Enter the festival grounds at the start
    - The National, full-set
    - Fields, full-set
    - Minus The Bear, 2:10-2:40pm
    - Nada Surf, full-set
    - Cursive, 3:50-4:30pm
    - Get something to eat, etc.
    - Jurassic 5, 5:30-6:15pm
    - The Cardigans, 6:30-7:45pm
    - The Faint, full-set
    - Orbital, full-set
    *NOTE: Strong beginning, but the middle is weak... I'm not even a big Cursive fan or J5 fan... And I'd be seeing the Cardigans to hear "Love Fool" live, mainly... Still, the ending's strong, despite never having heard of Orbital...*

    ~Sunday~
    - Uh... Enter in... around 4:30pm?
    - Le Tigre, 4:50-5:30pm
    - Broken Social Scene, 5:40-6:50pm
    - Mogwai, 7-7:30
    - The Knife, 8-9pm
    - R.E.M., full-set
    *NOTE: This is the reason I voted against Cityscape last time; it's got a weak Sunday line-up for me... Perhaps I'm uneducated, and a lot of the bands I've listed for both festivals I know maybe a song or two from and would see, but some form of familiarity would be nice...*

    Summary:

    If it were a "Word of the Mouth" contest in terms of bands, Cityscape would win, still, lemme draw up the bands I would die to see live:

    - Friday:
    * Modest Mouse (MAG)
    * Muse (MAG)
    * Fiona Apple (MAG)
    * Franz Ferdinand (CS)
    * Gorillaz (CS)

    - Saturday:
    * Zero 7 (MAG)
    * Arcade Fire (MAG)
    * Daft Punk (MAG)
    * Dresden Dolls (MAG)
    * Fields (CS)
    * Minus The Bear (CS)
    * Nada Surf (CS)

    - Sunday:
    * Broken Social Scene (MAG/CS)
    * PJ Harvey (MAG)
    * R.E.M. (CS)

    It's pretty clear that BOTH festival's Sundays (and finales) are pretty piss poor for me, but Music at the Gate's Saturday is what wins over my vote.
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

    Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

    Hmm.. Music at the Gates has many conflicts, but also has more acts I want to see. Both lineups are great tho, but even with the conflicts, MAG wins my vote. I really want to see Kieran Hebden.

    whoa, I just now noticed that Orbital and folks are playing SATURDAY at city scape and not sunday...I kept reading the poster left to right, and never noticed that sunday is actually in the middle (and a little lower)...bad poster design, plus I think sat's lineup would be better to close out the festival anyway (mainly because of Orbital - but eh...)

    The REM/Peter Gabriel conflict is not a good one. the same people who would want to see one would also want to see the other.

    Just a preliminary count, but here's (essentially) how to design a successful festival by Coachella Message Board Member's choices (namely the repetition of certain groups)

    Repeated Twice:
    David Bowie
    Muse
    Radiohead
    Daft Punk
    Gorillaz
    LCD Soundsystem
    Basement Jaxx
    The Dresden Dolls
    Les Savy Fav
    Mogwai
    M83

    Repeated Three Times:
    Broken Social Scene
    The Knife
    Underworld
    and...
    The New Pornographers

    Underworld doesn't surprise me, however, New Porn certainly does...
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

    Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

    there are more bands i'd love to see at music at the gates, but the schedule for cityscape seems more diverse and more fun. plus the national, plus the location.

    bad poster design, plus I think sat's lineup would be better to close out the festival anyway
    Everyone else can read it fine. In fact, I don't know how you missed it. Look at the font size and placement relative to the other text. Surely you can't be serious.

    The REM/Peter Gabriel conflict is not a good one. the same people who would want to see one would also want to see the other.
    Gabriel starts a full hour earlier than REM. That is almost a full set for headliners by Coachella standards. Hell, you could even watch him for 2 hours and still get 90 min of REM. The set times are long to give people their moneys worth, and to ensure that you can at least watch a good chunk of music before leaving to go somewhere else. As opposed to having huge gaps of dead time at stages. Also, those are closing type acts. There is nowhere else to put them, except on different days, where it would still be an issue.

    having 19 bands is not cheating. it's actually placing yourself at a disadvantage. cheating means giving yourself an unfair advantage.

    there's nothing wrong with the poster design. you simply can't read.

    It's just that I read the poster left to right, so I never paid close attention to the what order the dates were in, I assumed it was just went Fri > Sat > Sun instead of Fri > Sun (lower placed obviously) > Sat. I just think it would of been the other way, plus I think a huge reunion like Orbital, especially occurring in London, would of been better closing Sunday anyway.

    Yes it is, rules clearly state 20 bands no more no less on each day. Having one less band means more time given to other acts. Hello, I technically lost to a cheating festival when I played it straight up.

    These are my two favorite of the four remaining so I'm voting for the winner regardless. I'm leaning towards Music At the Gates but I'm not gonna vote yet.

    Music at the Gates doesnt have alot of creativity to its lineup, I think its just a mash up of bands that we (the people on this board) always talk about (daft punk, arcade fire, radiohead, david bowie). I think Cityscape and Muertos put more thought into it. And Cityscape has Orbital.

    They're both good festivals, but I vote for Cityscape.

    I am having a really hard time deciding this. Music at the Gates corresponds more closely to my musical tastes, but I don't like the idea of the winner of this contest being someone who had a big advantage due to rule-breaking.

    EDIT: Okay, I voted. I decided that I wasn't comfortable voting for a festival that had such a major advantage from rule-breaking. Even if the rule-breaking was unintentional.
