So I went to the Natural History Museum yesterday to catch Deerhoof and Autolux as part of the first friday series. I got there early (around 5) to wander around the museum and eat, since I had never been there before. Pretty cool place to just chill out and walk around.
The bands played in the Hall of North American Mamals on the first floor right in front the buffalo diorama. Autolux was scheduled to go on at 8 but didn't get on until 8:35. Apparently there was a huge line around the block of people trying to get in and they were trying to squeeze as many people in without violating the fire marshall code or whatever it was.
Autolux came and did almost enitrely a noise set. After about 30 minutes of playing noise they actually started doing some songs, although I don't believe they did anything from Future Perfect. Im guessing they were all new songs. They were okay, a little more mellow and noisey than the FP stuff but not bad.
Deerhoof had an awesome set. They did all my favorites from Friend Opportunity: The Perfect Me, +81, Believe E.S.P., The Galaxist, Kidz Are So Small. All of those sounded amazing live, even though the sound system the museum has was pretty shitty and not nearly loud enough. They also played stuff like Dummy Discards a Heart, Panda Panda Panda, Flower, The Last Trumpeter Swan and some others that I can't think of right now. They played for an hour plus an encore which was nice since they were scheduled for only 45 minutes.
Overall it was really awesome. My complaints would be the late start, the sound system, and the stage was really low to the ground so it very hard to see. I could see people's heads on stage but thats about it. Didn't bring my camera so no pics but I wouldn't have gotten any good ones since the stage was so low anyways. The only other bad thing was the crowd. Lots of little LA hipster teens who were acting like assholes, disrespecting the museum by climbing on the railings, etc. and pushing their way through the very packed crowd trying to get close to the front. And lots of talking during the sets.
Anyone else go?
