I have to wash and brush my hair at least, my bedhead looks like a family of rats had a wrestling match in my hair.

Sometimes at the theatre after a scary movie, I'll have a big rat's nest blob on the back of my head.

This girl I use to play poker with always showed up with a big rats nest in the back of her head. We always assumed her and her creepy boyfriend just had a romp in the backseat of the car and she forgot to brush. Maybe she just got done watching a scary movie instead.

I'm not girly either, my attempts at girly in clothing and hair and such have never suited me.

I use to try to be more girly, did my hair and make up daily, wore dresses or skirts regularly, etc. Then on the days I didn't feel up to it people would ask what was wrong, was I sick... Now I show up in jeans and tshirts most days, hair up, no makeup, on the rare occasion I have something special planned I dress up and people comment on how great I look. I like it better this way.

This is my typically my philosophy, too.
Why dress up for work, when I'm shoved in a corner?

I do clean up good though! I'm just waiting for my hair to grow back out. I feel masculine without it, sometimes.

This article annoys me. It does not really go into any biological reasons why this happens; it just points to social media. I am not "addicted to pregnancy" because of social media.

Haha! Yeah, I have a stash of them sitting under my bathroom sink, never used except for in my bedroom or around the house. Every time I see them I'm reminded of my failure, but then every couple of years I'll go to the store and tell myself that maybe it wasn't me, maybe it was the brand.

Oh man, one time a guy friend was at my house and I was explaining to him that I do not do anything with my hair most days. He was like, "You're exaggerating, you have to at least brush it."

That's why I keep my hair so short - so I don't have to brush it or blow it dry.

I want to cut my hair off again, because I can't stand doing my hair. But with the little time I leave myself to get ready in the morning, it's easiest to pull it back. The only time you will see my hair down or not under a hat is when I have come from the hair salon, and then I'll not wash it for days so it can stay "nice" for a bit.

I wish my short hair was low maintenance, but I find I have to style it because it's so thin and fine it would just sit flat to my head if I didn't. But if I'm going out to just grab groceries or whatever and don't feel like styling it, I'll put a cap on.

I like your hair style right now. I prefer the blonde over the purple, but if you prefer the purple you should do it. If it's ok with your job.

I need to find a new salon. The lady who had been doing my hair isn't answering my texts. She was kind of sketchy to begin with, but she was in my budget. I keep looking at groupons. I want to lighten it up for the summer again. I am thinking a lighter red with blonder highlights.

Ok I found an article, and I'm going to put it HERE:

    http://theamericanreader.com/green-s...hy-it-matters/

I haven't finished reading it yet, but I remember going to many, MANY concerts and club shows alone growing up, and if people asked me about going alone, they were always somewhat surprised that I never got attacked. This article is actually about hitchiking on the road, but my situation seems tangentially related. Anyway I HAVE gone on many road trips for shows alone as well.

I have to report that my first groupon purchase was a total success. I have gotten quite a few compliments on my new hair. I am now going to see about getting other deals through there.

Going on solo road trips to a concert isn't really anything like the experience of hitchhiking, I don't think, but you are right in that being a woman who is alone in public often signals something problematic, worrisome, confusing because it is at odds with the narrative of womanhood that our cultural landscape has fostered for so long.

The article she wrote for GQ in 2012 - The Truck Stop Killer is good as well. And I've got Sheltering Sky on my bookshelf from an ex boyfriend but I haven't read it yet.

Whereas a man on the road might be seen as potentially dangerous, potentially adventurous, or potentially hapless, in all cases the discourse is one of potential. When a man steps onto the road, his journey begins. When a woman steps onto that same road, hers ends....

...A man on the road is caught in the act of a becoming. A woman on the road has something seriously wrong with her. She has not “struck out on her own.” She has been shunned. And once one person has shunned her, the next will as well. Simply the fact that she is out there says something about her is frightening.....

...This is what it means to have no narrative outside of victimization and violence: it means wasting time constructing your moral right to tell a story in the first place, it means watching it get choked in the crib…
(this is a good representation of her argument, for anyone feeling lazy)

I hitchhiked once, but with a female friend, in Wales. A station wagon loaded with 12 year old boys picked us up.

edit: My friend had arrived in the British Isles a couple weeks before I did and spent that time with another friend in Ireland, and there she learned that sometimes the only way to get somewhere was to hitchhike (she didn't know how to drive herself so couldn't rent a car).

I started going to the movies by myself when I was 16, and I remember then having to explain it to bewildered people. And I will never forget when I was 18, like the first weeks of college, going to the cafeteria for dinner (alone!), saying hi to my friend who was sitting on a bench outside and who revealed to me that she'd been waiting there for 20 minutes because she was really hungry, but didn't want to go in and eat by herself. And her friend that was supposed to go with texted her cancelling and she'd already biked all the way over and was now waiting til another friend got out of class and could join her. Did I want to wait and eat with them? No bitch, I'm starving.

    "You eat alone?"
    "All the fucking time"
"Aren't you worried about....I dunno....like....what people might think?"
    "I assume they'll think I'm hungry, Janelle."
    "Woooooow"

I'm going to stop reading right now as I'm talking about driving almost a thousand miles by myself later this month. :P

I used to drive a lot alone when I was young, before there was cell phone coverage in most areas, and never had any issues. Used to hitchhike occasionally and most of the time people seemed more worried to take me in the car than I was to take a ride from them.

BTW, I love going to the movies alone. Movies are not a social experience normally, so I don't understand why it's weird to go solo.

Eating alone is something that more people seem to have trouble with. We were just talking about this last night! I have no problem eating alone but tend to bring some sort of armor against the world... like a book, newspaper, playing with my phone, or just even keeping my head down. It's tougher (but really great people watching) to just eat alone looking ahead without worrying about the appearance or that someone might approach you.
