I don't have any experience with timed feeders, but here's something related I found very amusing:

I have that exact same feeder and that is more or less what my fattest cat does when it is in use.

Cara, your cats are the fattest I've ever seen. Is the cat feeder helping them lose any weight? Or do you have to resort to the underwater treadmill tactic?

Note: I've seen Cara's cats. I don't see a picture of them here.

I only use the feeder when we are gone for the weekend and it definitely churns out way MORE food than they should probably eat. And then Vlad sticks his paw up the feeder and gets little pieces of food loose and eats all day. They are on a canned wet food only diet now, though, and the vet is making me reduce how much they eat so perhaps they will lose weight. Here are my fatties:

Oh, well then the timed feeder doesn't work well for that purpose. Yikes. Good luck, Cara.

This is our new family member. Her name is Maggie and she is such a good doggy. We rescued her from South Gate, and I have no idea why anybody would have wanted to get rid of her. We scored.

Maggie needs some training. She's 9 months old and she jumps, nips, and wants to climb on our table when she's excited. Her previous owners, I gather, would leave her alone for really long periods of time - up to 10 hours sometimes. Now, she's on her own for at the most 4 hours, but she still gets REALLY excited when we come home. It could be only 20 minutes and she wants to get all over us. I know it's love, but it's frustrating. Are places like PetCo or PetSmart reasonable places to take a dog for training or should I look into a more personalized approach? Is it worth the added expense?

I ran after a loose dog in my parent's neighborhood for about 30 minutes and only found out after I caught her that she was abandoned along with 3 other dogs. So...now I have a dog until I find her a home.

    I named her Chloe:

From her pics I thought Maggie was a Golden Retriever, and that's how they behave as puppies, but it sounds like she has some separation anxiety. The best way to fix this is a ton of exercise and structured training. You don't have to hire someone but I would definitely invest the time in keeping her attention and keeping her busy with tons of reward based activities. A tired dog is a happy dog. Also what sort of discipline are you using to keep her from jumping and nipping and such?

Oh, I've had Chloe for 3 weeks now! I keep getting people that want to take her in but "back out" at the last second. Hopefully I find a place soon, its easy to get attached to her.

Why can you not keep her?

TG, I tell her no and reward her when she has all four feet on the ground. The nipping I don't know quite what to do. She does it when she's playing. She'll bring her toy over next to us and bite us. She got me good this weekend, so I have this awesome bite mark on my upper thigh.

When Asha was really little and would nip to get our attention, I'd take my hand to her snout and gently hold her mouth shut for a second or two and say a firm No. It would never hurt her but stopped the behaviour pretty quick with repetition. They need to learn that biting is completely unacceptable, especially if she's leaving marks on you. The only behaviour I haven't gotten a handle on with her is jumping on friends that come visit. She doesn't jump on me or Kristian, but she freaks out with all our friends, to the point of annoyance. But I have a bag of treats nearby to give her if she sits or lays down, and when someone comes and that helps get her under control.

Three weeks ago a feral cat had a litter underneath my neighbor's deck. One of the kittens was rejected after 2 days when the mother moved the litter to another location. We thought that this poor kitty was dead, but it surprised me by wiggling when I went to get it. We started bottle feeding it and are going to keep it safe. Her name is Oregano because she was born in the weeds near my herb garden.

    So cute!

We got Volta when she was about 10 days old in a litter of (motherless) foster kittens. [Her three siblings were adopted out]. Here is a shot of her taken by a friend at one month:

She is now about five months and over ten times bigger than when we first got her; just over five pounds. We suspect she'll at least double in size yet again.

Her belly is shaved because she was recently spayed!

Adorable. You should write a children's story about her.
