if you dont want to camp you can get a hotel in either ellensburg, or moses lake they have plenty of hotels and about the same distance away from the gorge either direction (aprox 40 miles away)....

its generally less expensive flying into ontario than palm springs. southwest flies into ontario which is even better for saving $. i really cant see any other reason than that.
