Re: Educate us on the 2013 lineup
Thanks guys! For a couple of people it was hard to find good YouTube sets, so if anyone has a good substitution, especially for Maya Jane Coles, let me know and I'll put it in there.
That site also embeds SoundCloud, but then it doesn't work with the "play all" functionality, so I was trying to keep it to YouTube sets.

Re: Educate us on the 2013 lineup

Seriously, this booking shows me GV knows what the fuck is up. Maybe a few years late but so so appreciated.
Thank you ods..!

Re: Educate us on the 2013 lineup
The Shouting Matches are a side project of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Peter Wolf Crier's Brian Moen. Apparently, Phil Cook of Megafaun (who is a remarkable drummer), was an original member that will also be at the Coachella set. It's been described as "dirty bluesy rock".
Studio output is hard to find and the youtube videos that exist aren't of the highest fidelity, but enjoy some hard-hitting lo-fi goodness in the following

This is the only place I've been able to find a Shouting Matches studio cut:

White Arrows is an awesome up-and-coming band from LA; long time Coachella attendees who finally get to play. These guys are so fucking chill.
Saw them at FYF and at Soda Bar in SD a few days later. They killed it both times. They are really fucking great and make good vibes with guitars.
When I saw them I literally said they needed to be one of the opening acts at Chella this year. Good thing someone listened. (proof I'm a genius: https://twitter.com/theods/status/248609413638807552 )

Kids These Days are another great last-liner and one of the awesome hip hop acts on the lineup. Full band, original vibes, and debut album produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. They're pretty fucking dope. From Chicago

Much appreciated education so far. To fix the YouTube loading times, simply use a text link to the video.

Re: Educate us on the 2013 lineup
So I'm having problems with the editor: none of the buttons are loading, the search function isn't working, and it won't accept my edits. I'm hoping this is one of those temporary issues associated with the deluge that hits the board after the lineup is announced, but until I can effectively edit the front page will not be updated. Sorry kids.

Blame it on the mods...typical.
Seriously though, what if we broke this thread up so that there are separate threads for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. That might help to cut down on the load time and could also make it easier for people looking to "fill in" a specific day.

Re: Educate us on the 2013 lineup
GRIMES (real name Claire Boucher) is a 25 year old Canadian artist that can best be described as a hybrid of Bjork/Aphex Twin/Mariah Carey. She has 3 albums to her name and it is her 3rd release 'Visions' that has really put her on the map and which many consider to be one of the top albums of 2012. 'Visions' is her most accessible and pop sounding album and contains the ubiquitous single 'Oblivion'. Anyone unfamiliar with her music and looking to check her out should definitely pick up 'Visions' as I imagine most of her set will be culled from this album. Interestingly, I think I remember reading somewhere that she recorded 'Visons' during a self-imposed weeklong isolation whilst consuming vast quantities of Speed.
Her other two albums are also very good (her 2nd album 'Halfaxa' is my favorite) but fall more on the experimental electronic side where one can hear the influence of Aphex Twin with her prominent use of schizophrenic drum beats. Her live performances are similar to TUNE-YARDS in that she will loop beats, melodies, and her voice on the fly and create a sonic soundscape. However her music is much more ethereal and danceable in comparison to TUNE-YARDS spastic sound which I find quite grating and annoying. I can see GRIMES occupying the same outdoor stage time that TUNE-YARDS did in 2012.
This is my favorite song of her new album:
Favorite song of second album:
Really cool performance from a Seattle public radio/tv show:

Re: Educate us on the 2013 lineup
I'd actually describe Grimes as Kylie Minogue doing bedroom pop. That's not a bad thing, though.

This has to be like the stupidest explanation of an artist ever.

Its also not a bad description of what she sounds like. She has said in many interviews that Mariah Carey and Richard D. James are two of her inspirations. She may not sound exactly like either of them, but if you listen to her you can tell where her influences come from.
EDIT: With that being said, if you have never listened to Grimes before, Randy, I can guarantee you would hate her. You probably shouldn't even bother.

Re: Educate us on the 2013 lineup
I listened to a Grimes song today.

Re: Educate us on the 2013 lineup
Maya Jane Coles is not just another dj. This 24 year old renaissance woman is an audio engineer, producer, singer, graphic artist, fashion designer, record label head and dj. She began producing music in her home town of London around age 15 and released her first records in 2008. Her basic style is house, but she stretches into many other genres. Her dj set will be sexy, hypnotic and uplifting.
Musical aliases include Coles' dubstep/future-bass moniker Nocturnal Sunshine and a collaborative project She Is Danger with Lena Cullen. She has remixed songs by Massive Attack, Gorillaz, Little Dragon and Florence & the Machine. Her latest release Easier To Hide is the first record on her self started label I/AM/ME. The ep is also notable because it features Coles' performing the vocals.

I thought that too, the first time I heard her. Seeing her live though made me realize she has quite the exceptionally powerful voice.

White Arrows look like Tommy Bahama is going to try and make a run at diversification away from middle aged white guys into young hipster white guys.
