Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
In no particular order:
Whores, opening for Kylesa at the Jinx, Savannah GA. Amazing noise rock, cannot wait for the full length. (It was actually 12-30-11, so sue me.)
NoMeansNo, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Austin TX. Once again, one of the tightest bands I've ever seen, and the old men have more energy than most half their ages.
Floor, The Friends of Statts benefit, Savannah GA. The guitarist/singer from Torche's old band. That guitar tone, FFFFUUUUCCCKKKK.
The Men, Savannah Stopover, Savannah, GA. Didn't seem happy to be there, played, left. Great anyway.
Red Fang, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Austin TX. The middle of a blazing Texas day is not how I wanted to see these guys, but I really enjoyed their set. Would love to see them in a club.
Black Tusk, Fun Fun Fun Fest Nites, Austin TX. After a long day of music, and having seen them a bunch of times in Savannah, they absolutely blew me away with how much fun they were having on stage.
Refused, Atlanta, GA/Austin TX. Great both times, but Austin was pretty magical and perhaps the best outdoor sound I've ever encountered.
Surfer Blood, Fun Fun Fun Fest Nites, Austin TX. Not as great as when I saw them open for the Pixies, but still top ten of the year.
High on Fire, The Jinx, Savannah GA. Amazing. Loud.
Superchunk, Fun Fun Fun Fest Nites, Austin TX. Legends, playing from a legendary catalog with skill and energy. Will always be in my top ten any year I see them.

Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
Chris, how in hell is another Radiohead show at an arena better than D'Angelo rebirthing soul in front of our eyes in the House of Blues?
-
Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
I'm tellin' you... that particular Radiohead show was something else. Sasha, Lingo, and Chris were all gushing. I thought it was just me since that was my first time seeing them...
-
Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
1. Refused - Coachella, 4/13
2. Pulp - Coachella, 4/13
3. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Pitchfork Fest, Chicago, 7/14

5. Sleigh Bells w/Elite Gymnastics - The Blue Note, Columbia 4/23
6. Melvins w/Unsane - Firebird, STL 5/03
7. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Sprint Center, KC 11/17
8. Fiona Apple - The Midland Theater, KC 7/17
9. The Magnetic Fields - The Sheldon, STL 11/14
10. Mission of Burma - Mojo's, Columbia 4/05

Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
I'm still seeing Sunn O))) and the Mountain Goats again this year (both made it into my list) so there's a chance for things to change before year's end.

This set was the best Atlas Sound set I've ever witnessed. Fresh off Parallax, he performed the entire show solo. However, unlike previous solo Atlas Sound sets, which have either been ambient loop-based fares or acoustic shows, he decided to go all out. The set featured only a few tracks, but he built every song from the ground up, playing live drums to a sampler and then performing every instrument on his own. This was the later show, so he was pretty drunk and also completely in the zone. What followed was just great, and I hope he can do something this spectacular again.
I was at this same show and I agree with you. Excellent set.
Wasn't that venue weird/interesting? It was like and old church.

I love that place so much. It's actually an old library from the Spanish era of Los Angeles. Great place to see a show.

Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
I need to decide if I should treat the three nights of MMJ at the Wiltern as one event on my list or separate them. Because it would drastically change things.
Still have Sufjan, The Aquabats, and Ty Segall to round out 2012. Its been an amazing year.

I decided to not include multiple performances from one artist on my top 10 list. I choose the best one out the bunch for artists I saw multiple times.
And I agree, this year was an amazing year for music. After the 1-2 punch of Refused in Pomona and Dre and Snoop at Coachella, I was convinced those were going to be my top 2 shows for the year. Im not finished yet, but Refused ended up as #2 and Dre and Snoop didn't make top 5. Insane year for live music.

Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
Sufjan won't make anyone's lust unless you truly love Christmas carols.
-
Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
More a comment on what I have left and the year still rolling on strong in December, but the experience is of equal importance (in some cases more important) than the music on its own. A lot of Sufjan's christmas songs are his own originals not just standard carols as well. Also, CHRISTMAS.
And the thing with the three nights of MMJ was that there were no repeated songs and oddly no talking any nights besides a thank you. It felt like one giant concert with breaks during the days and other bands going on in between them. Its hard to explain, but it was the ultimate experience I had this year and would certainly be #1 by miles if I list it as such.

Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
I looked at last year's thread and saw my #2 was two separate nights of Bon Iver. Looking back I should have just picked the.first night. But yeah, your situation is slightly different since they didn't play any repeats.
-
Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
Dre at Coachella
Sigur Ros at OSL
Beck at Bimbos
Bruce Springsteen at Fenway
Bon Iver at Coachella
really the only ones that stand out for me
-
Re: Top 10 concerts of 2012
Not a thing from SXSW?
And are you guys referring to the Ty Segall show at the Smell? I found out today that, should that actually occur, I will definitely be able to make it. STOKED.
