That's what I hear. I just really, really don't care for the band. I recall not liking Phosphene Dream a few years ago, but with all the praise for the band from people whose taste in music I respect, I put on Passover today and didn't like it much at all. They just seem like very run-of-the-mill, bland psych rock. Almost every bassline sounds like the one from "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" and the singer's voice really doesn't work well with the style of music.
What am I missing?

Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
Have you listened to Phosphene Nightmare? I think it sounds significantly different from their other work. Especially "Melanie's Melody" and "The Boat Song." Christian's voice is incredible. Icing on the cake for me.
EDIT* I glossed over your distaste for his voice. That's a very hard factor to overcome. I can't get into Depeche Mode for the same reason.

Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
I don't mind his voice itself at all. I just don't care for it with the style of music the band plays.

XTC's alter-ego deserves mention/listening.
Would be a fun Gobi reunion show.

Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
That'll never happen. Alan Partridge will likely never perform live again. Not to say I wouldn't love it.

What are some BJM songs as good as "Anenome"?

"Nevertheless" is in a similar vein and is quite good...

"Servo" is also tasty...

There's so much worth exploring in their catalogue, but also so much crap.

Can you give some album recs por favor?
The internet tells me Take It From the Man! is their best album, and NMH recommended I just start with Tepid Peppermint Wonderland, the compliation album.
-
Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
That's a pretty good comp as it covers quite a wide range (up to a point, as they've continued recording and releasing music since it was assembled). I'd agree that's a good place to start, and then branch out depending upon what you like best on there. Take it From the Man! is quite good, as is Bravery, Repetition and Noise. They're probably my favorites.

Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
for some great psychedelic rock/neo, I'd go with their debut Spacegirl & Other Favorites. i never hear this one mentioned when people talk about BJM albums, but its absolutely fantastic.
Kid's Garden (one of their best songs hands down)
Fire Song (this version appears in "Sound of Confusion" from Mental Illness, but it was originally on Spacegirl)
Hide & Seek
Thoughts of You (really dreamy/shoegaze influence here)

Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
I'll also agree that their comp is a great place to start. It is where I started, and like said before, it covers alot of ground from their diverse career.

How are Black Mountain live?
-
Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
I'm not sure that's an answerable question. After they were booked opposite Roger Waters in 2008 no one has ever seen them play.

Hahaha. Touché. On top of that, it seems like they don't tour often. Could be wrong about that though.

I saw them play on a foggy day, in the Golden Gate Park, during OSL. They came on just before the Keys and Radiohead. I thought that they were pretty fantastic. The chick's voice reminds me of Beth Gibbon's. And the male lead singer was pretty great too.
I wasn't at Coachella this year but I did watch Mazzy Star on the live stream.

After hearing Wilderness Heart, I hated it so much that I skipped their LA show even though I had a ticket. However, I saw them on the In the Future tour and they were fucking incredible.

Nice. Her voice is rather haunting.

Haha, is Wilderness Heart really that bad? I haven't listened to it yet.

Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet:
Death in Vegas is absolutely one of my favorite psych rock/electronic bands. Unfortunately it seems like they rarely tour the states, one band I was hoping would be at Coachella or any other local festies in the last few years, no luck though. Hopefully after they finish their current tour in Europe they will do a state side show.
Personal favorite/opening track of Contino Sessions: Dirge

Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
Today I had a 500+ mile drive across the Utah, Nevada, and California deserts. I figured what better time to really milk this thread's recommendations? Some I was familiar with, some not. I added a few of my own ideas too that I thought would be fitting. I loaded up the following albums and put it on shuffle and just let it play all day. Needless to say, this yielded some absolutely spectacular results.
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
Bardo Pond - Bufo Alvarius, Amen 29:15
The Black Angels - Passover
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Dandelion Gum
Comets on Fire - Avatar
Dungen - Ta Det Lugnt
The Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat
The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
Les Rallizes Denudes - Mizutani
Lumerians - Transmalinnia
The Make-Up - Save Yourself
Oneida - Preteen Weaponry
Six Organs of Admittance - Asleep on the Floodplain
Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
Wooden Shjips - West
-
Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
I probably haven't listened to that Dungen album in 5 years, but it's great.

Thoughts? Comets on Fire were at their best with Blue Cathedral. Fiery Furnaces best one is either that or EP. Six Organs of Admittance have some fantastic albums, including Compathia, School of the Flower, Dark Noontide and Dust and Chimes. I've never heard that one though.

Re: In My Dreams Everything's Orange: The Psychedelic Music Thread
I haven't listened to Blue Cathedral yet, and I actually listened to Avatar front to back a few weeks ago and it's fucking great. The SOOA album was good, but a bit meandering at times. And The Fiery Furnaces I really don't get, to be honest. I remember listening to Blueberry Boat probably 4 or 5 years ago and not really caring for it, and a bunch of those songs came up today and I still feel the same. Maybe other albums of theirs will click with me better, but the ones from that album just don't really do much for me at all.
But let me talk about Embryonic here for a second. I hadn't listened to that album for a few years, and had forgotten how wonderfully out there and bat shit insane it is. And especially mixed in with songs from those other albums, it stands up very very well. I loved it when it came out, and I probably listened to over half of it today, and to me it's absolutely up there with the best work the Flips have ever produced.
