Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Behold: your one-stop shop for all 2013 headliner speculation. A place to argue about unsourced internet rumors concerning Daft Punk. A place to discuss the potential of a lady headliner. A place to consider the headlining merits of various classic rock acts that will never play Coachella. A place to debate the "rap headliner every year" postulate. A place to request Radiohead, again.
I'll kick things off, Green Day will have 2013's Black Keys/Kings of Leon/Muse/Killers/Jack Johnson/Red Hot Chili Peppers "our songs are played on heavy rotation FM radio" headliner spot.

Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Green Day sounds about right.
Green Day
Daft Punk
Tool
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Jack White
Pearl Jam
Beastie Boys < Daft Punk
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Yeah who else other than eminem, outkast, or beastie boys can be a rap/hip hop headliner? I assume that trend will continue.
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
It's no longer a trend; it's irrefutable scientific fact.
Justin Timberlake.

Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Green Day doesn't sound right at all. It sounds ludicris and completely awful. Coachella is better than Green Day...they're a perfect fit for Lolla, not us.
Daft Punk
Tool
Pearl Jam
(not necessarily in that order)

Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Following template of last three years
Outkast or Eminem fill rap slot - darkhorses Drake, Lady Gaga
My Morning Jacket or Green Day fill the contemporary classic rock slate. Darkhorses actual classic rockers - Stones, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Bruce, Paul Simon - or maybe quick Black Keys Turnaround for Florence.
Daft Punk leads arty fare slot, followed by Tool - darkhorses The National, big time older act like Bowie or Talking Heads or quickly Reunited REM.
Personally, I'd like to see the fest take a year off the rap Headliner if can't get Outkast and go with an Old Timer in one of the three slots next year.

Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
MOAR BLACK KEYS PLEASE!!!!!
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Aren't there term limits that prevent the Black Keys from coming back?
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
The Black Keys are Coachella's Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
green day has been asked in the past and declined, not sure that will change any time soon.
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
^Good. Do that many people actually listen to My Morning Jacket or The National?
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
the national? no. MMJ could pull as big a crowd as the black keys methinks.
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
No doubt
Tool
Shakira (rap headliner)
Avicii closes main stage Saturday with Levels p2 a 4 hour anthem to party rOckin, guest stars LMFAO and Fergie

Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
I swear to god I don't know why you fucking drooltards can't shut the fuck up about daft punk. Calling them 'arty' is like calling Thomas Kinkade arty.
Green Day makes a hell of a lot more sense as a headliner than many actual Coachella headliners. Jack Johnson, Kings of Leon, Coldplay.
Bruce as a headliner with a hologrammed Clarence would be a thing to see.
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
2013 may finally be the year that Neil Young headlines. And/or some other "OLD" act that gets people in a tizzy.

MMJ sets are always half empty. At least the sets I've seen.

Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
You must realize that trying to fit headliners into some sort of imaginary template you've created in your head is just completely stupid, right? Just because there have been rap/hip hop headliners the last three years doesn't fucking mean there will be one every year, especially taking into consideration all of the festivals that occured BEFORE 2010. Also, remember, Dre/Snoop were the backup to the ill-fallen Black Sabbath. Were it not for the cancer, there would have been no hip hop headliner this year. Just. Stop.
Also, this Green Day shit...just...ugh. It's mortifying they'd ever even be asked.
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Even apart from the "can they headline?" arguments, MMJ and the National don't make a lot of sense because both bands should be off of their touring cycle in 2013.
I like Daft Punk, but Tom's right: if they play, they'd replace the "rap headliner" slot of recent years, not the Radiohead/Arcade Fire/Gorillaz/Cure/Portishead*/Bjork "art" slot.
Brucechella would make me contemplate both weekends. His set lists would make the "Lucky / EIIRP" v "You and Whose Army / Exit Music" debate look even sillier than it is already.

My predictions
Friday - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Deadmau5 close main stage.
Saturday - Pearl jam
Sunday - Outkast

Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Re: categories. Of course you can't fit every festival headliner since the 3-day expansion into perfect categorical boxes, but there has been a certain logic to it. The big switch has been from a classic rock legend in 08-09, to a rap act in 10-12, but all things considered, there have been three imperfect categories they've fit the headliners into each year.

Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
Captn: I'm quite sure they have a formula; look at the rap headliners
They will have a ghetto money drain every year.
This year was Snoop n Dre, last year was Kanye
It'll be something like LoHo sings with DJ support from Paris Hilton

to be fair, they were desperate. it was the mccartney year when they didn't have him booked until end of december. def. not a first round choice. at least not that year, not sure if they've been asked other years.
talk all the shit you want, but i'm ready for foo fighters to headline. qotsa sub.

Again, you're forgetting they weren't supposed to be there this year, thereby making your "ghetto drain hip hop headliner" comment invalid.

Man, that's some desperate shit right there.
Steve, can you please talk to your buddy and settle this "formula" shit once and for all?
-
Re: Omnibus 2013 Headliner Speculation and Argument Thread
It's seem like the formula is less "We have to have a rap headliner" and more "These old farts can't perform, someone call a rapper."

sure, but your likes/dislikes have no bearing on whether or not they're headliners. I'd rather listen to Rebecca Black than U2, but I can't argue that U2 would headline.
I really think the only "formula" there is is: who is big enough to headline? who will sell tickets? who can we get that is somewhat original? who is the best fit? Not, 1 rap act, 1 art act, 1 whatever act. That's just silly farts.

formula is a trade secret, much like kfc's 11 herbs and spices.
