I... I remember. I remember the golden age, when the Underground DJs played. Funky basslines, grooves, non-anthemic vocals... you think it's a joke, but that used to be the norm. Or at least part of it. But then... the Rising Popularity Of The Scene happened.
There wasn't any more room. I remember, I was working in a warehouse at the time... we were stocking mellow rhodes stabs, like we'd done for so many years. I heard a knock at the door... and then some goons barged in and just trashed the place. "You stock trance pads from now on," they said. They cleaned us out, and we had to start working for them.
It still haunts me, this new generation... this new scene...

It's popular, yes, but there is just too much of those types of artists and very few quality, rare acts. We're going from a year that had The Chemical Brothers, Sasha, Leftfield, Shpongle, Trentemoller etc., and the only acts that seem to be in the upper echelon of long-time EDM fans this year are Amon Tobin and DJ Shadow.
It has nothing to do someone coming to a conclusion that they don't care for an artists based on popularity. By most accounts, Sasha is internationally known and has been performing at massives and festivals for a couple of decades now and he is respected around here. Same with The Chemical Brothers. Same with Daft Punk... I could go on.
