The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
Now that R.E.M. have announced the title of their upcoming album, the time has come to start an official R.E.M. thread on the boards for all discussion about Athens' finest.
http://remhq.com/news_story.php?id=1225
The album is called Collapse Into Now, which is a name I like but don't love. It's sufficiently R.E.M. sounding though, and I'm sure it will grow on me.
PS: Paul, if you're reading this, book them for Coachella!

New info on the new R.E.M. album:

Pretty exciting to see that Patti Smith's involved, E-Bow the Letter is one of the best tunes of the Warner Brothers years. Not too mention Eddie Vedder and Peaches (WTF?).

Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
I haven't been excited about an R.E.M. album in a very long time but seeing them in 2008 was pretty much an awesome event at Sasquatch. They had so much energy and played so many hits. I was actually quite shocked. I saw them on the Monster tour and though it was great, this Sasquatch performance was even better.

Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
This would be very, very good.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
I was there too, and it was definitely a great show. Losing My Religion into Harborcoat into The One I Love was just about the most awesome thing ever. They do a great job of covering all the bases at their concerts, especially on this latest tour.

Here are some "motion picture"s I shot during their 08 Greek shows.
They sounded terrific and put on a great show...

Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl in 2003 and loved it. Great setlist.
And this needs to happen somewhere next year:

Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
Bump....anyone download the free track Discoverer? I dig it. I'm listening to Automatic for the People at the moment. I'm really hoping they appear on that poster in a month.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
I said it before and here it is again. Automatic ....... is one of the greatest albums of our time. REM for 2011 :thu:
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
With all the rumors of other big headliners, REM hasn't been mentioned lately. I hope they end up there, if they're releasing an album next year, it would make sense.
REM 2011!!!

Discoverer is just ok to me. Although even the most uninteresting REM song has that one hook somewhere in it where you go 'fuck yeah.'

Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
I agree with that. Accelerate was the first album I liked from them since the Automatic and Monster days.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
Speaking of, Monster has to be the most unfairly hated on album by a major label band ever. I fucking love that album. Crush with Eyeliner ftw.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
I agree. That album cursed them for years and for many it marked their demise. Star 69, What's the Frequency kenneth, strange currencies and bang and blame. I like it all.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
Monster is great. But it was so everywhere that its easy to just think of the couple of lame tracks that were huge singles ("Star 69" and "Strange Currencies")
It's their big, buzzy, Banana Splits bubbleglam record and its one of my favorites of theirs.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
That's funny, I remember the unavoidable big singles being What's the Frequency, Kenneth and Bang and Blame, and to a lesser extent Strange Currencies.
Edit: Thinking about it, no way was Star 69 a big single. I think you're thinking of Kenneth.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
Star 69 was a single but nowhere as near the hit Kennth was and Kenneth still stands as a great rock song.
Also, for as much glam that was on that album they really let loose with the distortion.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
"Star 69" was a single tho a minor one with a low key video.
And it and "Strange Currencies" (bad Righteous Brothers soundalike) were inescapable on MTV and altradio in spring 1995.
-
Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
Strange Currencies is a very touching and awesome song. Although I've only heard it on the radio a handful of times, so the overkill factor isn't there for me with that song.

Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
This thread needs to be updated, because it is starting to look like this new one will be the best R.E.M. album in 13-15 years (hey, I love Up). Check out the five songs that have been released below:
http://ozonlaag.tumblr.com/post/2878...o-now-2011-hey
Some of these songs are better than a handful of IRS era tracks (though not many), which is something I haven't been able to say about a new R.E.M. song in a long time.

Re: The R.E.M. Thread (For the People)
Some might say it's too soon but their return to Sasquatch would be most welcome. (they headlined '08)
