There is also the Wonder Ballroom on the East Side of town which is decent too for a show but a little out of downtown.
Sweet jesus...taxes are pretty high on Portland huh? I wonder if the lack of sales taxes off set the high state income tax? Work in Washington(no state tax) but shop in Oregon(no sales tax)? Thoughts from our Pac Northwesters?
alot of people use to do that when i lived there. Or they would live in one of the surrounding towns around Portland like Willsonville, Tualatin, Beaverton, Gresham or West Linn which is where I lived. Nice area suburbs. Washington is nice though, but they get you on the vehicle tax, Oregon you pay like $50 for 2 years or something but Washington they base it on what your car is worth.
Registration is $54 for 2yrs + $21 for DEQ (emissions) before you can renew your tags. You can renew tags at the DEQ place though so it saves a trip to the DMV. New car tags are good for 4 years.
I bought my car in WA state and as an OR resident, I didn't have to pay WA sales tax. The no sales tax thing on everyday purchases is not a big deal for me as I buy most of my stuff online.
Ohhh I forgot that you could show your Oregon ID and not have to pay WA sales tax, I tried to do that when I visited here and they looked at me like I was loony.
The Schnitzer is quite nice for a mid-size theater. I saw Antony there last weekend and was impressed by the sound for an old hall. Of course we were right in the middle and 12 rows back so I can't speak for experiences in the rest of the venue.
/\ Good call. I saw Sigur Ros there in '06 on the Thurs following Coachella. The Keller Auditorium is another nice all seated venue (cap. 3500 iirc) with wonderful sound.
The Schnitzer is nice. Saw Arcade Fire there last year and, other than the security, it was incredible.

My husband got a too good to be true offer for a job. We are seriously considering a move from Orange County to Portland. What advice, information, pictures, or warnings can you give us?
It's pretty rainy at present, but it's nice and low-key with good coffee and beer and there are some great shows. I will have you over for dinner if I ever clean anything.
Portland is the shit. But if you are planning on tracking down a job up there, it might be tough... most of my friends there say the economy is still hammered pretty bad.
It is. A lot of places aren't even listing open positions publicly because so many people are walking in daily to ask if they're hiring and drop off resumes. But if the husband's too-good-to-be-true job offer can comfortably sustain your family in the event that you don't find something, that's a big check mark on the pro side.

moving from Phoenix to Portland was the best decision I've ever made.
Addendum to that other thing I said earlier - the local music is really good. We get hit with a lot of great tours, but there are also tons of great bands who play around town regularly for very little money, and there are a few clubs with stellar booking agents and you can generally count on them to bring you something awesome even when you walk in blindly (Doug Fir and Mississippi Studios spring to mind).
Also, your skin stays nice longer up here.

I moved from the Coachella Valley to Portland last October, haven't regretted it since. Like most have been saying, music scene is great and so is the food. Plus the wineries are really starting to take off up here, I'm finding some great Pinot Noirs from the Willamette valley. Another thing is the mixed drinks, they are loaded and cheap since it is a tradition going back to the logging days.
Also: food carts, fall leaves, streetcar, Powell's.
We also have assisted suicide should you regret your heavily influenced decision to relocate.
If things work out I probably wouldn't need to get a job, but I'd love to get a job at a coffee shop or restaurant where I could work while Izzy is in school.
What neighborhoods would be good to look in to as far as housing and schools?
Theijuiel, was the transition from sunny to rainy as difficult as everyone says? At present, this is my biggest concern.
This may all be a pipe dream, but we are having fun exploring the possibilities.

I don't know a lot about the schools here, but most of the people I know with kids live in southeast and are happy there.
I can't wait until my angercycle gets back from the shop.
This thread mentions traffic. Is it reasonable to think that a family could get away with one car? Public transit is reliable?
