View Full Version : Myspace profiles: public or private? Which do you prefer?

bassmintpdx

The title says it all. Obviously just about everyone is going to prefer that other people have public Myspace pages. That way you can check out the Myspace page of friends of friends, acquaintances, people you sort of know, strangers.

So what do you prefer for yourself, a public Myspace page or a private one?

Haha, thanks.

I'd like mine to be public, but lately with all the spam and phishing, not to mention an Ebay scam I got just now made me switch mine to private mode.

I think private profiles are retarded. It is a social networking site. Making a profile private defeats the purpose that the site was intended for. If you constantly find yourself the subject of unwanted suitors and therefore put your profile to private, perhaps it's time to get off of the internet.

I agree but how do you deal with spam, phishing, scams, and so forth then?

I didn't read it as sarcasm...

I was just curious so I started this poll...I could've gotten scammed out of $820 on Ebay just now on a computer that didn't look suspicious at all. Good thing I caught it at the last second. It made me think about online privacy...

Mine is public too. I just like to show my friends what I've been up to and see what's up with them when everyone is busy with their lives. People set theirs to private cuz they don't want people talking shit when really they're the ones going around talking all the shit, myspace is like high school on the internet

I agree but how do you deal with spam, phishing, scams, and so forth then?ive been on myspace for almost four years and ive never had a problem with spam, phishing, scams, or so forth. sure, every once in a while some retarded promotions thing will try to add me, but for the most part, it's clear sailing. and you know how? i don't even have 100 friends. i can count on my two hands the number of friends i have on there who i do not know in real life. my friends don't spam my shit. that's all there is to it. and i grew up on teh internets so i don't fall for the scams. altho i must say, myspace lately has been making me want to find the next best thing, thanks to all the retarded, in-your-face advertising. thanks, rupert murdoch. you ruined myspace.

It was a Second Chance Offer, which is a common event on Ebay. If the highest bid doesn't work out, the next highest wins. I got one of these offers, but I had a hunch that it wasn't legit, and I was right.

That just got me thinking about online privacy in general, particularly on Myspace since everyone seems to use it. I'll probably switch it back to public, which it's always been. I just switched it to private tonight right after this Ebay nonsense...

Myspace was bought for $500 million, yet it's still as buggy and unreliable as it was when it ran out of Tom's garage.

My page actually stays in pretty good shape (despite being public), simply because I deny friend requests from spammers, bands, commercial products, or other assorted BS.

I only have myspace because of people on this board. Most of my peers don't use myspace or friendster or liveblog or whatever else, I went on myspace because of my friends on this board and I make my profile private because I like to share my life with some people that I like and I trust that live all over but I'm not really trying to advertise it. That's my perspective. I have I think 30 friends or so.

bmack86
05-22-2007, 01:12 AM
I've got 197 Myspace friends, and, of the ones that are peope and not bands, I've not met 4 of them. Three of those are Valarie, Hannah and Sonofhal. The other guy might be Delta, I'm not sure. And, about 50 of those are either bands or this fabulous one

I had to set mine to private in a hurry when about two weeks into my current job I realized that the office hens were looking at my page. Luckily, I cut them off before they could get into reading the blogs, which would have meant the end of my employment.

That's not entirely true, a lot of people use myspace to communicate solely with people they know. Also, it's a lot different being harassed by "unwanted suitors" when you're per say an underage teenage girl, who are constantly harassed by myspace creeps, therefore I understand why they'd want to keep their profile's private.

Mine is currently set to private due to some issues I was having with a new girlfriend of a friend's ex who kept using my page/friends to try to get to my friend who's profile is set to private for the same reason. She's a total stalker and to date has made about 15 fake profiles to try to get me & my friend to add her, at first we just ignored her, then she started just sending really offensive messages to both of us, then the final straw was when she posted blogs on some of her fake profiles linking to my page and saying really uncalled for derogatory things about me. So at that point I felt it best to just deny her or anyone fooled by her access to my page. I hated to do it though as I do think it defeats the point of having a myspace, but hopefully she'll crawl back under whatever rock she came out of soon and I can go back to displaying myself for all the viewing internets public to see. One plus of the private profile though..... way less "Hey Baby!" messages from dodgy guys.

It's worth mentioning that mine actually doesnt have any pictures of me on it. I mostly use it for posting interesting photos and videos I've taken and that aren't of me or people I know. There isn't much personal information on it. If it had a bunch of pictures of me and my friends, I would probably keep it on private.

Spam is weird. Sometimes I'll go a week without getting any spam messages. And then I'll get 20 in five minutes. Nothing beats getting the same message from the same "person" ten times.

Back in the old days I used to pride myself in approving all requests, because I didn't want to be stuck-up and juvenile over who can be "my friend", but then someone kept posting comment spam. She was really good at it, too..would write long, detailed messages containing specific, personal details and questions, and then always close everything with a link image to some not-free gaming site. Damn strangers. Well, there's one stranger who friended me on myspace, and she's real cool, but that's the exception and not the rule.

And there's nothing more tactless and rude than just deleting people. I mean actual people you at least somewhat know, not so much bands and spammers. Gotta love signing on and then seeing your number of friends is one digit lower, and then you have to browse through your list to see who the asshole is.

Hannah darling, you know you'll never measure up to my manlihood.

I am like the perfect pair of natural breasts they show you in breast enhancement advertisements. The 20 year-old model they use for anti-wrinkle cream testimonials. The professional athlete they use for gatorade commercials. You might as well save your money and stop trying now.

Probably about true for Myspace overall and not just people from this board who voted.

I believe he is referring to an old Buckner & Garcia song called "Do the Donkey Kong".

Yes, I'm talking about the same Buckner & Garcia who did "Pacman Fever".

What? You don't know Buckner & Garcia? Where the hell were you in 1982?
