2nd favorite act of the weekend.. ive never seen people crowd surf during a live dj set???? every song they played just clicked..no let downs at all.. i loved how they threw in 'renegade master' also.. while the visuals were somewhat lacking, their sound is so unique and so crafted, it far made up for it..brilliant.. can't wait until they release their new album..

i'm curious, what were they actually playing? were those patch synths just there for show? because their music is very sample-based. and how about the amps, is that for show as well? i dont know why you would need/want amps for an electronic performance in the sahara.

did the songs sound straight up like the recordings or were they actually live versions? i would guess they would just be playing abelton live, kind of like daft punk style, but i'm really not sure

for some reason i heard people saying it was a Dj set, but i mean i highly doubt they brought out AMPS and a bunch of shinny equipment and stuff just for show. especially when they announced before hand that it was live. I'm just wondering what was on the other side, like what they were messing with. cuz it seemed like all the knobs were facing the crowd..

i'm sure it was live to some degree. i'm not trying to call them out or anything. but did you actually see them playing the synth at any point? their whole aesthetic is very cut+paste. their songs don't sound like them playing synths, so it'd suprise me to see them actually up there not playing computers.

i'd be interested to hear how the live versions differed from the recordings.

also, that live set up definitely looks like they were trying to maximize the visual appear of the stage show. i mean, the wall of amps and that patch-chord synth. there's easier ways to go about that in a live set up.

someone else said earlier that they say them working off of laptops and midi controllers. Those would be enough to make the music you were hearing. Those racks in front of them were probably just for show. The speakers could have been real though.

I was never thinking you were calling them out. Sure they could make it different set up wise to be ideal for them, but I think they chose to do it this way. There had to be computers there in some form but I dont know. I wasnt under their noses. Download the video and give me your thoughts. Another one is coming after that. I think the speakers were real though, and one of them stepped up front and changed some lines on the patches to the synths, I dont think thaty was for show.

I'm pretty sure the synths were for show. Yeah they came around and switched a cord once (I was front row exactly in the center), but that was for show too I'm sure, considering they played a clip saying "Mr. Fix It!" or something when they did that haha. That and, right before the sound started to fizzle out into static until the cord was changed.

Really, if they were going to use all that stuff, they'd have it facing them lol.

I wonder if the amps were working or not. The show didn't seem that loud to me, I mean, MSTRKRFT was louder IMO.

The whole amps/synths/cross ensemble is a Justice thing. I think there's art for that too, something like that.

yes, without a doubt. Justice were the fuckin highlight for Saturday!

I saw Steve Aoki and Mstrkrft, those were fuckin great. Then went to Arcade Fire and saw that great set, and ran to Justice quickly, made it a few min before We Are your friends started, so I was highly happy. I had fuckin tickets for the show on Monday at the Echoplex but my friends were too tired to go, so I stayed home and wasted money by buying tix online before Coachella. FUCK. was it good? Justice rocked the Sahara though, and God i need to see them again.

Lord love a duck JUSTICE were good. I hate that I'm missing them twice in LA right now but three days in the sun kicked my ass.

Did anyone else notice that Paul van Dyk mixed in some JUSTICIAN tear-the-skin-off-your-body soundclip/homages very early in his set? I've seen Pvd thrice before and that's never happened.

Well we will always ask this question "did they use that s**t?? Or was it all for show?"

the question of whether they used all that equipment up on stage and whether they performed live are not necessarily related.

I think everyone agrees they performed live. Apparently Busy P confirmed that last week. No reason to doubt it.

The equipment question is whether they actually used all the gear they had in front of them or whether they just used the laptops and midi controllers that someone already claims they saw behind that mess. Both is a possibility as well, but that seems a stretch. I just don't see why they'd need all that crap. I've seen acts that perform with some hardware but nobody drags all that jazz around with them these days. it's possible I guess.

summerkid
05-01-2007, 11:17 PM
Not only did Busy P say it last week on the forum he said it at Coachella. I think it was during the end of his set he said something like "Our good friends Justice are up next and we're all very excited for them because its their first live show"

bmack86
05-01-2007, 11:18 PM
They used at least some of the gear in front of them. They seemed to be very intently focused on their boards the whole time, and at least once one of them came forward to change connections up front. That may have all been faked, but it seems rather elaborate to make up a myth. I'm very glad that i caught their set. First live set, how awesome.

I've been thinking that too, but I didn't see it happen and there's no vocal girl talk fans in here.
I think the most plausible excuse for that thing is that they were looking for some sort of centerpiece or theme and that was easier than a giant pyramid of lights

DJ's often mess with gear, switches, buttons, etc that don't do shit.

I don't see why they couldn't have used some small part of that rig though.

Trick Loves The Kids

Can someone explain what Busy P meant when saying that they would be "live"? And what this discussion is all about with them using said equipment? Are we talking about the difference between spinning a record vs actually making the music using whatever tools they used in the first place? I dont know shit about music or making music so if anyone could point me to a good resource that would be helpful also.

justice normally do a dj set, which involves playing their music and other people's music off of turntables (in their case, CD turntables)

this time they played entirely their own music off of what were probably laptops. they can manipulate loops and samples more easily than when DJing and have more control over the sound. they didn't really "play" anything live as in they probably weren't playing synth lines on a keyboard behind the big cross (i could be wrong) but they were doing more than just DJing.

jackstraw94086
05-02-2007, 05:33 PM
also keep in mind (not you, trick, the other guy) that the term "live" is sometimes somewhat of a misnomer because very often EDM performers are doing far less physical manipulation of the music on a laptop than they would be doing with turntables.

It's a flexible term.

Here's an example of what a "live" performance may look like (I'm not a big fan of the guy's music, but it's a decent visual)
8Gs2d6xIyWA

You can get pretty creative with how you perform live though.
I've heard of people trying to use accelerometers to create midi controllers before, but it used to be pretty impractical. The Wii controller is one of the first mass consumer level devices that has them and dudes are already tricking them out.
Expect to see some wild shit in the next few years.

This set was just too awesome, clearly the best electronic set of the fest. Came off sounding like the absolute future of the genre. Every twist and turn was thrilling.

I loved Justice before, but this is honestly the only time I've seen them that they really meet and exceed the hype.

Also - Did Busy P ever cheer up about everybody leaving the tent after MSTRKRFT?

this is not music comparison, both artists have their
talent. Im just trying to understand why people dont understand what Live Music is.

White Stripes play the guitar and drums oh yeah and vocals. They were good.

Justice played the synthesizers which control all the analogs you saw in front of you. These synths & computers will output digital sound and Justice will arrange multiple beats together to make a song - edit . sample. & loop LIVE. Yes you can buy yourself a program like fuity loops, but it doesnt mean you will sound like Justice. By the way, i dont think they use fruity loops because the beats are to complex, and compression levels have crazy ass sidechaining.

You do not only hear guitars, drums and vocals, but you also hear Highpass Filters, voltage controlled oscillators, frequency modulation, wave forms, attack times, delay times, sustain levels, low cut frequencies, kicks, drums, vocals, threshold levels and the bass all outputed thru the Marshall Speakers place just in front of your faces, all LIVE. This my fellow coachella friends is LIVE. Controlled by 2 individuals just like Jack would have the guiar and play, Xavier would have the Synths to arrange the beats. Just like Thomas Bangalter & Guy Manuel (DP. the robots).
Check out my photos by the way. tons photos from that night.

†††††††††††††††

dude, this isn't an issue with comprehending how analog synthesizers work. Every sound that Justice, or just about any act these days, can be done with software.

And your analogy to Jack White playing guitar is somewhat weak. Justice wasn't making beats and melodies on the fly. At most they were juggling loops with preprogrammed intro's outro's etc all stuck to a grid with a global tempo control. Maybe a few filter sweeps here and there. I would still find it impressive, but it's very different than creating rhythm by hand. The real talent in EDM performance lies in the creativity and production skills.

Still not buying that they used all that gear up there. Daft Punk doesn't even do that. Everything you described above can be with far far less bulk, and nobody would be able to hear the difference on a system that big.

Justice vinyls are from europe too. That means you'll pay the import premium if you buy it here anyway, which very often offsets the added shipping cost. I just offered a few sites with the widest availabilty. I've gotten vinyls from UK for $4 shipping. That's not really much more than you'd get it shipped from in the US. How do you downlaod supefans videos? I dont see a download file button, is it compatible with a mac, or do I have to download their program? I missed justice being front row for girl talk, and it was off the chain with the 50 girls dancing on stage. Too bad my canon has crappy sound when the bass kicks in, because i have a lot of footage of girl talk. Hilton sisters on stage and shit.

Ummm, on the page there is a box that is empty and you have to type in the 3 letter code it shows to the left of the box. After you do that a timer should begin counting down. When the timer is done you click download and there ya go.

One of my biggest regrets ever was the justice set at coachella.

I was so fucking pumped for the set.

Ran from arcade fire before they ended to get over there. But being 2 people from the front at arcade fire took all the life out of me. Was insane up there. I have never been so tired in my life after that.

And the pot and booze didn't help out at all.

So ran over there somehow. Got into the tent took some pictures and pretty much collapsed.

Don't really remember much of it at all. I do remember not being able to get up I physically couldn't move had to get a guy to help me up after lcd.

I listen to justice daily now waiting for the day I get to actually see them.

have them on my pollstar list someday I'll get an update of them coming around and I will prob going insane with excitement. And I'm ready to drive far for it.

Now that I'm all depressed from thinking about it, I'm going to go eat some ice cream to cheer me up.

I had listened to the Waters of Nazareth ep (or single?) before and wasn't too impressed, but today I've been listening to the album. and god damn.

if those tour dates are true, I turned on just in time. mezzanine is the perfect place; I might have to take that next day off work.

I know I'm preaching to the converted here but I've been listening to the Justice CD today and it's fucking sick! Like lowfront, I was too tired after Arcade Fire to really enjoy Justice's set and I really regret missing "DVNO" and "Stress" and the rest of their awesome tracks. (All I actually caught was "We Are Your Friends.") I daresay this might be better than any of Daft Punk's albums. No song is as great as the classic Daft tracks like "Around the World" or "One More Time," but overall, it's really fantastic. I want to give myself some time to mull it over and get a better perspective before committing to the notion, though.

what's with Coachella being in Los Angeles? The Daft Punk shirt I bought at Coachella 2 years ago had the same thing. You would think they know what city they are playing in.
