None of you have been to Battle Mountain Nevada, halfway between Reno and Wendover. They were voted the armpit of america and actually bill themselves as that on billboards. This place seriously sucks. on't stop, just drive through.

Amazingly enough. I've been there. For about an hour, picking up my uncle for my sister's wedding.... 6 hours away in Southern Utah. Not the funnest drive. But I survived.

I think it's more of a valley than a desert, but there no greater hell hole I've seen that compares to Bakersfield

There's this dead little town off the 395 on the way to Mammoth before the Pine towns. I forget what it's called - like a foreign name or sumthin'. You drive through and there's never anybody there. Reminds me of "Tremors."

Phoenix is fuckin booomb shit. Born and raised, and really it's not that bad.

But there is a puny little good for shit town in AZ called Baghdad.

I don't know why Phoenix is even on the list; it's a pretty vibrant town with good food and a decent night life - it is suburban sprawl, but where isn't in the Southwest?

Worst are the in-between towns: Baker, CA and Gila Bend, AZ are pretty much pitstops for people going to/from So. Cal to Las Vegas and Phoenix (respectively).

Oh God, I was just reminded of the time we went cross-country and got a flat tire in this awful town called Barstow. Yech.

yeah, phoenix should not even be on the list. i was there a few halloweens ago on the ASU campus wrestling in the sunkist tournament. quite the college town. they have a major airport too. tell me what Barstow, Ca has other than a shortage of TP every time i gas up...

Some on the list seem crappy and may look crappy but overall some pretty cool people there. Palmdale however is a shithole full of gangsters who moved out of La and Sylmar. lots of murders in Palmdale as well as massive drug issues, illegal dog fighting clubs and other assorted bad stuff. The typical redneck types in a true desert city would run off trouble like that before it became a serious issue.

I have to second Trona. Every time I drive through it on the way to Death Valley I mutter a little "thank you" to the powers that be that I don't live there.

Hah, totally! I drove through Death Valley and Trona on the way home, insane town. Everyone there is trailorfolk and mine for Searles Valley Minerals or whatever. I saw nine different religious sects represented on a sign there and the population is like 1,000 or 2,000....

I'm trying to figure out which town your talking about. Olancha? Olancha used to be a bustling town until the lake that it was built on was drained by the Los Angeles Water District. I grew up in the Owens Valley, and I'd not call those desert towns. Mountain would be more accurate.

And, Trona gets my vote. We played them in High School, and that town is a shithole. They can't grow grass because there's too much sulfur in the ground.

OMG! I drove by there and was like WTF? I thought I was hallucinating from the heat. Baker won because I actually spent time there driving around and going inside places. The people were like folks I saw in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Srsly. I got the Fukk out ASAP.

And whoever voted for PHX is a tool. Apache Junction, anyone?

I doubt anyone will know of this town... I ended up stopping there with my band when our transmission blew... we had to wander around for hours til it was fixed.

Huachuca City, AZ

right next to that is an equally boring, shithole:

Sierra Vista, AZ

bmack - the town I speak of is a bit before Olancha I believe. Yea, I wouldn't consider Olancha, Big Pine and such desert towns either, but this one is before all that. It runs a long some small barren hills and there's nothing out there but dirt, trailers, and shut down markets. I always want to stop and take pix, but we're usually too antsy to get up to the mountains.

these places are heaven if you like dirtbike riding. I've been to Palmdale, Lancaster, Gorman, Victorville, and a lot more desert cities and it kicks ass riding there but other than riding, i dont see a point in actually visiting those cities.

See? Baker is in the pit of hell.

I call for a Coachella MB field trip to obtain some alien beef jerky from Baker. Get it tested. It's probably made of people or worse.

Also, anyone been to Primm, Nevada? Major suckage.

Is Primm even a 'City'? It has 2 casinos (1 closed) and a prison.

I would have to agree with Baker being an arsehole place, we stopped there when driving from Vegas to Coachella at the Burger King, and I feel sorry for anyone who lives there, I wouldn't even qualify it as a city.
