Do people usually get service at the venue? I recall someone saying that their cell phones were all out of range once inside. I dont see how , but just wondering.

They'll probably work on Thurs. Good luck the rest of the weekend. Delayed responses.

Are you referring to the updates you subscribe to or in general?

Senor Cardgage

You would think that since were right next to a city it wouldnt be impossible.
But for some reason its difficult.
Is it really because the lines jam up?

kharm11
04-18-2007, 04:15 PM
i think all should be good as long as i can text, anyone have problems with that?

suprefan
04-18-2007, 04:17 PM
Of all the places for reception not to be good its inside the venue. What are the odds that one spot is horrible but outside the venue its fine. And yeah it will be tough since like 60,000 cell phones are going to be used in the same general area. Get walkie talkies.

kharm11
04-18-2007, 04:19 PM
ahhh, man!!! bummer!! ok, wel anyone wanna recommend some good walkie talkie brands?

Senor Cardgage
04-18-2007, 04:21 PM
Unless its an expensive Walkie Talkie, it will suck.

We did that in 05, and the reception was crap. Plus you get maaaaad cross-chatter from idiotic kids that think theyre funny.

kharm11
04-18-2007, 04:22 PM
hahahahaha, guess its safe to say i am screwed and good luck finding me in the venue!!! hahahaha! thanx for the info, i am gonna go walkie talkie shopping now...

there's good reception but not reliable prolly b/c too many users in a concentrated area.

It'll be fun. You can pretend its the 1970s.

kharm11
04-18-2007, 04:27 PM
i was thinking of setting up meeting places and times, as a just in case. or maybe we can play "where's waldo" type of game and see who can find me among the throngs of concert goers. First, to find me wins 100 bucks!

suprefan
04-18-2007, 04:29 PM
Kind of, but yeah texts should be alright I guess. Just hope they are not delayed. The easiest one is "Meet me at the Tessla Coil".

Yeah, we tried that one last year. Problem is that theres a huge circumference to the ring that thing is in. Not quite a pinpoint location.

I've been able to place a few calls, but they are usually dropped. I have t mobile and will have perfect reception..just too many people jamming the lines. Texts work..but as others have said they are delayed. Last year we tried walkie talkies and our signal kept getting crossed with others so they were useless.

Best bet is to try to pick a spot in advance to meet up with friends.

I'm going to choose some place that isn't so used like the tesla coil

I think I will use the churros stand as a meeting point

I understand there are WiFi hotspots in the camping, VIP, and I heard something about an AT&T "Blueroom". Any chance at picking up an internet phone for the event? And, how big are these hotspots.

Good News!

I saw them setting up a temporary cell phone tower at the site today! I don't remember that before, and it's probably not the only one. Hope to find better reception (or more capacity) at the festival this year.

I had great service at Coachella last year. I got better service there then I do in Vegas. I used my phone 6 or 7 times each day and I never got one dropped call.

Who's your provider. I've got Verizon and reception is good, but connection is spotty. Sprint users on this thread seem to be happy.

I have verizon and never had a problem with connections, reception or texts and I used them all quite a bit the last two years. I wonder how much each phones individual antenna's effect it. Me and my lady split up on several occasions and never had a problem connecting calls or texts.

I haven't seen anyone mention Cingular, so I'm sure (especially since I have it) that reception's terrible with Cingular @ Coachella. Well, even if so, it's ok. I don't plan on being on the phone or texting to much. I'm there for the music!

oh and walkie talkies are great. we're bringing a set of high dollar ones that i'm borrowing from my uncle. I just hope all the frequencies aren't taken.

I had (what was once called) Cingular and your assumption is correct. I got full bars of frequency on my phone but I couldn't receive/make/send phone calls or text until I was in my tent at night.

I have a question about the AT&T blue room. Will they recharge your shitty, obscure phone if you bring the charger? Last year I had a Razr with the convenient little USB hole, but then someone stole it after Rage, so...

'04 i had no service (that was verizon, but i think it was more my phone than anything cause my boyfriend had verizon and he didn't have any service issues). i switched to sprint in '05 and haven't had a problem making/receiving calls or text messages at the venue since. i was wondering the same thing about bringing a charger. i would think so. they have outlets. i say bring it on friday and if not then just leave it the rest of the weekend.

I'm not sure if Qwest was on Sprint's network then, and it seems like 06 was a clusterfuck for cell reception anyway. I have Qwest this year, so we'll see. I used all-tel last year which worked fine.

Well in 2006 they insisted that they could not charge my phone. It was that piece of shit Nokia phone that was the cheapest phone available to Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T back in the day. So it wasn't even obscure. I've known ten people that had that thing.

Calling will be nearly impossible, and texting will be really delayed. It doesn't really matter what service you have.. Verizon, Cingular, AT&T, Sprint.. Same shit. My friends have all had trouble contacting each other.. It will be awesome if they really built temporary tower.

Last year I they could not charge my black jack on Sat because they didn't have they right adapter. They asked if I had my charger by chance. I didn't have it at the time but i took it in on Sunday and they charged it no problem.

Getting your friends to hear and answer the phone is also difficult with all the noise. Plus, nobody checks their voicemail out there. My Cingular/AT&T had failed calls galore the past couple years as well. Very frustrating.

We usually just meet up in front of the Virgin store as it's central.

Bud Luster
04-10-2008, 01:02 PM
yeah, you gotta have a specific time and place to meet and an emergency place to meet if you get seperated (if you can make all of that work, sometimes the rules go out the window) you also have to have your phone on vibe (if you can even notice that) and check it often.

*edit: kinda why I like going solo, no one to worry about or get in the way of what you want to do. You can always make friends at the fest.

I put my phone on vibrate and still have a hard time.
only time I can feel it is when I put it in my bra but then
doing that during the peak sun and heat hours would not be a
good idea. gross!!!! and I always use text feature.actual voice to voice is
too hard to hear. no delays for me when texting.

in 2006 it was a dead zone for cell reception. too many phones in one place.
But last year it was solid reception. I guess the networks have improved maybe, and can handle that sort of mass now because the difference was tangible.
