View Full Version : Shame on KCRW

I am pissed off that KCRW, a local NPR station in Santa Monica California fired Tricia Halloran, the host of Brave New World. Brave New World was a how on Saturday nights from midnight to 2:00AM and was one of the few outlets that played indie rock music on the radio. I read about it in the Los Angeles Times today in the Calendar section. I hope that station will keep the show, even with a different host. Did anyone else ever listen to that show? I tried to hear it but I often go ot on Saturday nights.

why did they fire her?

JustSteve

they probably had a good reason.

I hosted that show a bunch of times. She was one of the few DJ's at night that knew her stuff. What a shame. She must have pissed of Ruth Seymour.

They're dropping "Brave New World."

And shouldn't you have better things to do on Saturday nights from 12-2AM?

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 08:37 AM
Juststeve they rarely have a good reason. Ruth Seymour is crazy.

kroqken
04-18-2007, 08:37 AM
Ruth Seymour was rude in the LA Times article. She said the firings were part of "show business." I heard she is a real bitch from people who know her. I wonder if any of the new shows will play indie rock or similar music to what Tricia Halloran played.

I know her and she is a terrible person.

It's not just her, they replaced everyone at Midnight I think.

New Midnight lineup:

Monday: Eric J Lawrence, Dragnet
Tuesday: Thomas Golubic, The Great Escape
Wednesday: Jeremy Sole, Branches
Thursday: Jason Eldredge, Accidental Rhythm
Friday: Mathieu Schreyer, On the Corner
Saturday: Dan Wilcox, Digging for Fire
Sunday: Aaron Byrd, Pangea
Sunday (3am - 6am): Swingshift becomes THE LAB. With revolving hosts - Andrea Canter, Jason Kramer and introducing Morgan Rhodes

KCRW revises late-night roster

Intended as an incubator for fresh talent, late-night programming at KCRW-FM (89.9) is being remodeled to bring in new voices.

Beginning today, Jeremy Sole, Dan Wilcox, Aaron Byrd and Morgan Rhodes will join the public radio station's post-midnight, pre-dawn schedule. Remaining in the lineup are Eric J. Lawrence, Thomas Golubic, Jason Eldredge and Mathieu Schreyer.

Dropped from the Santa Monica-based outlet were Scott Silva, host of "Connections" on Wednesdays from midnight to 3 a.m.; Kevin Ponthier, host of "Let's Get Lost" on Thursdays from midnight to 3 a.m.; Tricia Halloran, host of "Brave New World" on Saturdays from midnight to 2 a.m.; and Greg DaPonte, host of "Night Song" on Sundays from midnight to 3 a.m.

Some complained about the short notice they were given about the cancellations.

"This is show business," Ruth Seymour, the station's general manager, responded Tuesday. "You don't give someone notice and then put them in front of a microphone."

Who cares if she read this, she is a despotic old lady. I might even us the "C word" to describe her.

Thomas Golubic is a terrible DJ.

I met Ruth Seymour once. She is sort of scary.

04-18-2007, 08:42 AM
i better google this lady.

kroqken
04-18-2007, 08:42 AM
What did she do that was scary? Is she a control freak, because that is what I have heard.

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 08:45 AM
Those are some bad names for shows too.

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 08:46 AM
I used to have to work with her everyday. We had lots of long talks. I wanted to strangle her.

vinylmartyr

Other than around pledge drive time shes not there that often though.

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 08:50 AM
Those DJ's did not get paid anyways. DJ's after 12 don't make any money. Tricia Halloran was a great DJ though and a nice person. Its a shame really.

kroqken
04-18-2007, 09:00 AM
I know, she was nice. Why is Ruth Seymour such a bitch, is her old ass even awake at midnight anyway. She should be more hands off and not such a control freak. I bet her husband left her, if she was even married in the first place.

my radio is on KCRW 95% of the time... i hope the new staff and stuff they have on will be good

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 09:06 AM
Ken Ruth does not know anything about modern music. I think she believes she is the reason for KCRWs popularity. Its really mostly because of its location. When I was there she was single.

kroqken
04-18-2007, 09:08 AM
Another irony is that KCRW is part of Santa Monica College, but unlike many other radio stations based at a cloolege or university, I do not believe any of their DJs or talk show hosts are students at Santa Monica College.

It's too bad they got rid of Scott Silva.I didn't listen to connections much but, he was a good host on MBE when Nic Harcourt was out.

You don't get much better than Tricia Halloran. The other DJ's that they let go were ok. Thomas Golubic is nice but not a very good DJ. When I was there they would not let him host anything but the swingshift. I don't know any of these new people.

kroqken
04-18-2007, 09:10 AM
I hope Tricia Halloran finds radio employment elsewhere. Maybe she has a website or something.

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 09:12 AM
Yeah I bet Scott is crushed. He was just trying to be a DJ when I was there. I helped him and Raul out a lot. I tought them how they should present themselves on the air.

there is not another radio station like that that i can get on my radio...

04-18-2007, 09:17 AM
Maybe that is why people are switching to satelite radio. Sirius has a station called Left of Center that plays very cutting dege indie rock music. I do not think the merger between Sirius and XM will clear the required regulatory hurdles.

Sounds like a station in turmoil, or at least in a major transition. There pledges might drop due to the firings of many of the disc jockeys.

well you are supposed to pledge during your favorite shows in order to support it, if the NEW shows suck i would imagine less people tuning in @ those times would translate into lower revenue and the new shows being replaced along with the staff for the show...
-sighs-
wow when did this happen?
i didn't know about this until reading this thread

jimmycrackcorn

I hope KCRW loses money for what they have done. I alos wonder if their new Saturday night show will still be indie rock sounding in nature, or any of their other new shows.

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 09:30 AM
The news makes the most money anyways. The music shows don't bring in much money. They have a bunch of corporate donors too.

It is also too bad that schools like UCLA and USC do not have radio stations that play experimental or indie rock music.

bmack86
04-18-2007, 10:26 AM
UCLA does, we just suck and overbroadcast, so it's all on the internet. Which is why nobody listens. I can't vouch for USC tho.

kroqken
04-18-2007, 10:32 AM
When I went to UCSB, KCSB, their campus radio station had some good music shows. I do not know about now.

vinylmartyr

Ken you should try and get a show on KCRW.

kroqken
04-18-2007, 04:14 PM
Also, if I got a radio show, I wonder if it should be music based or me doing a talk show on current topics. I am versatile. Some people have told me for years that I would be good in radio. I could not work for the Seymour lady.

Courtney
04-18-2007, 04:20 PM
Ken, I think you'd be excellent as one of the people who do those little weekly commentaries like The Urban Man with Marc Porter Zasada or Art Talk with Edward Goldman. You could rant each week about dating in Los Angeles and talk about your various exploits.

Sort of like Alice Piasecki on The L Word, only less gay and less sex.

I read a little bit about the new dj's. It seems a few of the are music supervisors recommended by Garth and Jason and maybe one or 2 were volunteers. Usually KCRW gets their dj's from people who pay there dues by volunteering. In my experience there the dj's that are brought in by recommendation rather than volunteering usually suck. Here is the article.

Bad new Ken it looks like indie is out. They added another shitty dance show. I bet the 1st 3 shows will all play the same music.

Metropolis host Jason Bentley suggested Jeremy Sole, the co-founder and resident DJ of Afrofunke (Thursdays at Zanzibar) and a longtime DJ, music producer. His show Branches will focus on the future of roots music. Chocolate City’s Garth Trinidad suggested both Morgan Rhodes, who will experiment with dance music and everything on the cusp from a female perspective on Playground, and Aaron Byrd, a 22-year old who favors a global mix for Pangea. Both were volunteers on his show, and Garth’s co-host for his Sunday night residency, “One Way” at Zanzibar, Mathieu Schreyer, will also stay On The Corner on Friday nights.

Current Swingshift host and a Music Supervisor for Warner Brothers and MTV, Jason Eldredge will cherry pick the best dance music tracks for Accidental Rhythm, showcasing beats on the edge, musical risks and songs that set themselves apart from the crowd. He joins Thomas Golubic, a well-known music supervisor who recently made the jump from Swingshift to his own midnight slot with The Great Escape, offering a new twist to KCRW’s eclectic line-up with a unique cinematic sensibility.

The A-Track’s Anne Litt watched her longtime volunteer, and television commercial music supervisor, Dan Wilcox helm the Saturday night with Digging For Fire. KCRW Music Librarian Eric J. Lawrence will also stay put on Monday nights with Dragnet, a musical line-up of criminally overlooked tunes, hidden gems, guilty pleasures and standout selections from the latest releases.

kroqken
04-18-2007, 04:29 PM
I thought Digging for Fire would be indie or cool alternative based, since it is the name of a Pixies song.

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 04:32 PM
Ya maybe it does not say. The rest of those shows sound like clones of one another. Except for Eric and Anne Litt.

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 04:33 PM
Seriously how many Metropolises do they need.

vinylmartyr
04-18-2007, 04:33 PM

Too much dance music on that station is NOT a good thing. There are so many other deserving artists that need to be heard from other genres of music and I hope that Saturday night show stays indie rock oriented.

kroqken
04-19-2007, 09:18 AM
Of course, if their Saturday night show is indie rock based, why not just keep Tricia Halloran. She knew the music very well and knew what she was doing.

kroqken

The new music director of KCRW is Jason Bentley. I think that is too electro a direction for me. I never got around to hearing much of Morning Becomes Eclectic.

kroqken
11-18-2008, 12:01 AM
I hope Jason Bentley starts playing more indie rock and indie pop on KCRW. I am skeptical, based on his awful "KROQ Afterhours show", the worst music show on KROQ.
