View Full Version : Lolla's Posted Set Times Easily Defeat Coachella

Lollapalooza manages to post set times weeks before their show. What gives, Coachella? Nice to have so folks know who they will and won't be able to see, i.e. who they should be listening to in the weeks leading up to the show.

"I'm so smart that I can divulge entire discographies in mere minutes!" is practically what you're getting at here.
I understand that you shouldn't need more than a few hours to really decide what you want to see (although I'm usually carrying a ragged print out and making calculations till the day of, and then it becomes a ragged little booklet of improvisation) but I think you're missing this guy's point.
It kinda sucks to get into a bunch of bands and blindly discover they'll all be playing at the same time. Mind you, we should really be thankful that we discovered all these great new bands in the first place - but it's frustrating.
It's like you're studying for the Coachella Final Exam but the Professor won't tell you what's gonna be on the test so you just study every damn thing you learned in that class. And while you get out learning more by studying like that - we'd probably all get better "grades" if we had these set times at least a little bit earlier.

I would think the set times were set when the contracts were signed, but maybe they do things differently at Golden Voice. "When you get to Indio, we'll let you know what time you go on."

Oh yeah good one, so when Rage signed on the dotted line they were told "Hey guys, you will be playing at 10:00pm on Sunday night ok?" Give me a break, and yeah this can be a double edged sword you know. Lets say somebody cancels a few days before, how will they adjust the entire schedule that has been posted and that people have been memorizing? They do it this way to make sure there are no f**k ups, and how do you know they dont take OUR opinions into it either?
i.e. who they should be listening to in the weeks leading up to the show.
Set times SHOULD NOT DICTATE who you should be listening to leading up to the festival, thats unheard of logic. People should be listening to everyone so they can see what they really like and then pick.
I have a feeling this is going to turn into like the little fiasco the Roo kids had with us when the line up was not on the page when it was supposed to but we still had one anyway on here.

I agree we should be listening to everything to learn new music. Thats why Coachella is great, it turns me on to so many new artists every year. That being said, I still wish they would release the set times a little earlier then they do. I dont need it a month before, but at least a week would be nice.
To use the above analogy again: If set times were released a week ahead of time, then I could study all the material up until the last week, when I would get the study guide, and then use the last week to only cram whats on the study guide. 2 days is not enough time to put emphasis on whats on the study guide.

If you are camping there will be computer access on the camp grounds. You could always find a cyber cafe too and look it up. Also there is "Whats Up Coach". You will get text messages with updates like set times and other things. Check the main page for that info.

why are people defending GV on the set time issue? If someone drops fucking adjust it! There's NO reason not to release the set times way in advance! If you have any major conflicts you can spend the weeks figuring out what you're going to do. AND you can spend time getting to know the bands that are in timeslots you dont care about.
GV is going about this all wrong.

So what, Street Scene will beat out Coachella or something? I dont think you will be seeing another big promoter try and start a festival in California to try and compete with Coachella, thats kind of career suicide at this point. And why would they choose it over this? Seriously, give me your full detailed explanation on this.

That is an excellent point, in regards to Lollapalooza. At least we know who's playing on a given day, WAY in advance. And in regards to the set times, as has been pointed out before, and alluded to by PF, that 'the powers that be' are continually checking our input (via the board and the microcommunity) in an effort to minimize conflicts. Update your microcommunity profiles, people. They're watching. I'm gonna go update, Of Montreal hadn't been added when I last updated.

you're right....you're not like everyone else (other festivals). You are not as considerate and fan-friendly as the other festivals (such as Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza). However, you are snotty, elitist, and indifferent (towards any festival goers that question the way things are run by GV); as well as being overpriced.
There are some open-minded posters on this board (suprefan, rosetta stoned, patton), but mostly the Coachella fans on here seem like prissy, unfriendly, indie-snobs. This is a reflection of the vibe of your festival. "(You) are not like everyone else".
Everyone is friendly and optimistic about the bands on the Bonnaroo site. This is a reflection of their festival.

coachella has nothing to worry about for a while, but that doesnt mean they shouldnt keep trying to improve based on fans input. and supposedly they do, which is good, so hopefully they will listen to this and release set times a little earlier in the future. i think a week would be good, not too much to ask, is it? 2 days just seems a little short notice, especially when some people may be traveling during those times, etc.

Woodstock 99 was put on for the sole purpose to capitalize on the brand and make as much money as possible, Coachella is not on that same boat. Dude, I speak my mind and if its in their defense so be it. They havent let me down really so what the hell should I complain about? Bad things happen, we speak and they do their best to fix it.

In reference to the person who said that the Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza fans are more positive people in general, you kinda had a point. Coachella is still fun. So is Lollapalooza, though they have their share of other problems. The set-time thing is lame, though. I don't expect it as early as Lollapalooza puts it out but a week before might be nice.

Look kids, here is what you do.
Listen to as much of the line up as you can when it comes out, because you should know how all the bands are anyways. Because if you just rely on seeing the bands you like, you'll get into the other bands later on and say, "Damn it, I wish I had known."
As you listen to all the bands, write down all the bands on a word document. (It's even easier to just copy and paste from the line up sections, each day, in 3 pages on the document.)
While you listen to each of them, you can switch their places on the lists around, like if it is a ladder. That way you are able to think of what you want to see the most of those certain days.
Soooo, when the set times come out, you DONT have to "divulge entire discographies" because you've been doing that for months now. You just look at the set times, and at each conflict see what band beats the bands in the conflict on your ladder (as in the band in the highest position always beats the lower ones). That way you can do the entire Coachella plan in the 3 days you have the set times, without looking at the entire collections. You can use those 3 days to make sure you are positive, or think of which sets you want to do half and half, which should not take long.

Haha, other than set times and plans it really helps getting to know the bands. When the line up first came out I was kind of... eh, I could have cared less for the line up.
But now, after listening to like, all of it... I think this Coachella has potential of being the best Coachella I've ever been to.

I've been listening to all these bands since the lineup came out, and I've already fallen in love with like 75% (to be conservative, it's probably higher) of the lineup with even the rest still making me feel like "I'll check em out if nothing's on". My girlfriend and I started getting a bunch of stuff by all these bands, at least one album each, and our mp3 players are currently only carrying Coachella bands. That way I'd hear nothing but Coachella for the last few months, and really see who I like and who I don't. So far, I have to say Coachella has made it really hard by having a quality lineup from top to bottom.
The way I'm going to approach possible conflicts and such, is by ranking each band from 1 to 10 ("10" being "there's no fucking way I'm missing them, you stupid son of a bitch!" and "1" being "oooh, there's another water bottle"). I might even throw in some negatives for people I want to actually avoid (e.g. jack's mannequin and circa survive).

As much as I want the damn set times already (fuck! unbearable!), Lollapalooza isn't much of a festival if they try to pass off Ben Harper as a headliner. And Daft Punk should be headlining a nice, big dance tent in addition to there being a big main stage headliner that day.

ill accept the late notice if they would at least put it in a nice format. Seriously, the one they release is so hard to read. Its all about the excel spreadsheet that somebody makes each year. Last year there were some imitations, but the one that goes left to right (not up and down) is the shit!!

Why do people need any kind of spreadsheet anyway? All you need to know is where bands are playing, and at what time. Or maybe I'm the only one smart enough to not need such visuals.

why dont you fucking release the set times so that people who are planning on leaving around the set times can do it.
honestly if there isn't some huge addition on that list of times, coachella and GV may have completely lost my respect. i agree with the above statement about coachella fans and members thinking of themselves too highly. Despite the few cool people who are open and joke around and yadda yadda, this is a board where people go back and forth bashing on each other, and if this is any indication of what to expect from this festival, see you guys at lolla.

They had to start booking bands like the ones that play Coachella so they could compete ya know. They recognized that if it was only jam bands and whatnot that it was not going to stay as successful as it is. They needed to attract another demographic to the festival so they got Radiohead and everyone else to join and thats that. You know Coachella responded to this by making a completely different festival thats called Stagecoach. Blame Perry for making Lolla go into the pits so fast.

Coachella did Stagecoach so the dude wouldn't sell the Polo Grounds. According to the article from URB. Or rather, so it was financially viable for the owner to not sell the Polo Grounds to developers.

Yeah I know, but it was still a response any way you look at it. To keep it at the polo grounds, to present a completely different genre of music in the same model as Coachella, to show other festivals that they better keep improving or else.

Maybe I missed the /sarcasm tags but I fail to see how Stagecoach is any sort of a response to 'Roo going mainstream.
I'm pretty open minded when it comes to music yet I honestly couldn't tell you the name of any artist playing at Stagecoach.

Yes & No. There are bands at Coachella that I have tapes of, never mind cd's yet I never had the opportunity to see live. While it will be cool to see some new artists; I'm not coughing up a $1K+ for this just to 'experience something new'. Therefore, set times are important and there is no good reason why they are not released at this point.

they are not done yet. maybe they are not done because of all the surprise stuff. maybe the bands are fighting over who plays against who. maybe there are reasons you dont know or understand about because you dont work on it personally.
