Arcade Fire or Mumford & Sons - whichever is on tour; if neither, then maybe the Strokes
Daft Punk, unless they headline a new GV EDM Festival; alternatively, something hip-hoppy, perhaps involving the surviving Beastie Boys
Pearl Jam, unless they do their own PJ20-type event; alternatively, Foo Fighters? Muse?

If Blur/Stone Roses/Pheonix/RHCP can get a headline spot, Depeche Mode sure as shit could as well....despite your boredom. Copying and pasting the "Dream Lineup," as you call it, would have Bowie and Byrne so go fuck yourself.

Actually did that before posting ;) The thing is... I don't like Depeche Mode, and I'm pretty sure they won't be headlining next year, or the following year. This combination makes it easy to say "fuck you," in so many words, to anyone who suggests them headlining. 2014 is going to give you panic attacks. Rest assured, we won't be settling for Depeche Mode, squibs.

The person clearly isn't pleased with the headliners, and is suggesting stale possibilities. Let's just say that most people can name more Blur songs than they can DM songs. It could happen, but it shouldn't happen, and likely won't. I'm biased. Deal with it.

I am pleased with this years headliners. I will be at Blur/Stone Roses, might miss Phoenix because of horrible potential conflicts (but had a good spot in 2010), and have seen RHCP long ago. I would have been just as happy if Modest Mouse/Sigur Ros/WuTang got the headline this year (proving the big names are good this year), however the undercard is what will have me sprinting stage to stage for most of the weekend. If the headliner doesn't work for me I move to other stages. I was simply stating that DM are big enough to headline Coachella.

Now enlighten us Zafo on why you think No Doubt or Lil Wayne would work for Coachella? No Doubt is way too fucking bubblegum radio and Lil Wayne had a major stake in driving rap into the fucking ground. Cheesedick Hirojuku girls and face tats/Bieber sneakers. I'm biased. deal with it.

<<<Can name Song 2. See what I just did there? I'm most people at the moment. Sure, there are Blue fanatics, and DM fanatics. Most people are NOT fanatics of either band, and probably couldn't name a single song by either. Just saying, sport. Reality and your message board reality don't line up perfectly. Everyone here is a fanatic of at least one specific band, and the festival itself. In the real world, none of this shit matters. Don't over-glorify something that sees so little international attention (outside of the festival hound circuit)

You deny the truth in what I say, then go on to explain that I'm pretty much right. Let's recap. If you're only going to see the headliners on Friday, then you must be pretty fucking displeased with the headliners for the other two days. Isn't that essentially what I said, you contrarian twat? Have you ever sat there and realized that you're arguing bullshit with someone who agrees with you? It probably either happens to you all the time, or you lack self awareness.

If you have to ask why I think No Doubt would headline, then you clearly haven't seen them live. It's a wall of high energy hits. Much unlike this years headliners. Lil Wayne is the biggest name in hip hop that HASN'T headlined Coachella yet, hands down. Do you have true counterpoints, or are you just bitching again? You people...

Hello,
Apparently Veruca Salt is gearing up for a reunion INCLUDING long lost member Nina Gordon. Check their homepage verucasalt.com; since this january it shows an old picture of the original band in 1994. I'll put my money on an 'American Thighs-20 years anniversary-tour' (in 2012 it's 20 years)
just like the Breeders now do with Last Splash. Awesome! And a must have for Coachella!

Also check:

I'm implying that Coachella doesn't give a fuck about a poorly received Bonaroo set. Just like Kanye West bombing on the main stage didn't stop other festivals from paying him as a headliner. You're lucky I'm spending time responding to this. Eminem is guest to headliner status. Lil Wayne is on every other hip hop song that comes on. Lil Wayne has more to offer Coachella than Eminem does at this point. Maybe in a couple years things will be different.

Outkast are the Daft Punk of Coachella hip hop dream headliners. Eminem came out as a lesser guest of Dre's last year. Drake is the only one even in the running with Lil Wayne, but not close. According to message board legend, the festival will sell out regardless of headliners. Otherwise moving your Roo argument into the shitter quickly. No one important cares about Roo anyway. Proven fact. Now hose down the driveway 'for your dad gets home. You know how he gets after a long day at the plant.

According to message board legend, the festival will sell out regardless of headliners. Otherwise moving your Roo argument into the shitter quickly. No one important cares about Roo anyway. Proven fact. Now hose down the driveway 'for your dad gets home. You know how he gets after a long day at the plant.

nice ad hominem there, bruh. But if you need more convincing, Wayne has already made clear that he's going on hiatus to focus on philanthropy and skateboarding.

Well technically, if we're going with the whole parallel universes theory, it's my understanding that not only would a universe exist in which Drake would headline, but a universe would also have to exist in which Drake's cock and balls headline in a top hat and cane.

In a perfect world they are perhaps the only new(ish) bands that are sub headlining 2013 festivals that I think deserves the bump up to headliner sometime in the near future. Some promoters have already put them in US arenas.

If the new album is as good as the other ones, IMO, they have a catalog that surpasses several established headline level acts. Plus they are a great live act.

Exactly my logic. If someone had suggested Phoenix back a few years ago, it would've seemed crazy. Yet here they are headlining. I think The National deserve it at this point, certainly more than Phoenix.

They might be 3rd line Lolla, but
1. That lineup has not been officially confirmed
2. Phoenix isn't headlining Glastonbury, yet they are Coachella. There will always be discrepancies in billing between festivals.
3. The National absolutely should be on the 2nd line of that "leaked" lineup. They're after The Lumineers, The Postal Service and Vampire Weekend? Seriously?

Isn't Coachella the only festival they've truly headlined outside of France? I have trouble with counting 5th/6th spots at Lolla since that includes acts like Wilco and Ween.

I still think Phoenix were given the post after NIN/Bowie/Stones/Daft/Smiths/Heads all fell through despite crazy money.

I still think Phoenix were given the post after NIN/Bowie/Stones/Daft/Smiths/Heads all fell through despite crazy money.

I think TSR/Blur and Phoenix were booked last summer/fall as headliners, with the expectation that GV was going to throw crazy money at one of the names you mentioned, thus needing to book a couple less expensive acts as the other headliners.

If Daft or the Stones were on the bill, nobody would be talking about Phoenix or Blur being "weak headliners" and GV could still end up making a nice profit despite the crazy amount they'd shell out to Daft/Stones for two shows (Coachella's revenues are fairly fixed, it's the costs that matter to them).

Now that they aren't on the bill and instead are paired with a band who has played everywhere the last 18 months and Coachella twice already (and is coming off a mediocre record), you get the lukewarm reception Coachella's headliners are.

That's my two cents on what happened at least.

the only way the National arent headlining next year is if the smiths reform

Queens Of The Stone Age (with Iggy & the Stooges, My Bloody Valentine)
with Elastica as the other reformation

I find it odd that Postal Service can fill arenas and are sub headlining while Phoenix shows in theaters take a while to get close to capacity.

Sigur Ros are also outselling them at their own shows - while not even singing english.

I'm curious if NIN got crazy money from anyone or just the "standard" headliner fee.

Blur/Roses could have actually been the top 5th or 6th most GV has ever paid for top line act(s) in the festival's history.

Get over the Smiths, it's never happening (and it shouldn't as Morrissey is a fucking douchebag crybaby). It actually sickens me to think that GV would have offered to go 100% vegan just to get Morrissey to quit whining and play with Johnny Marr for 90 minutes.

They are both releasing new albums this year. It's not out of the question, especially if they are up to par or better than both bands previous releases. 3 years apart headlining for Arcade Fire does seem soon but two year jump for Arctic subheadlining to headlining can happen the Keys did it in one year... I'm biased toward AM but they would be more welcomed than Phoenix is this year.

James Murphy has expressed rather adamantly that LCD is done, and the hope for a reunion of sorts should be out of our expectations. I read an interview a while back (or it could be in 'Shut Up and Play the Hits') that a reunion won't happen unless they all become drug addicts or they really need cash. With that being said, I think Murphy is really underestimating the nostalgia factor. Once he's done writing, directing, djing, and making coffee, why not do a reunion show or tour when they're old buggers?

LCD's last show at MSG is probably the best show I've ever went to, so there's that.

Wouldnt surprise me if all 3 headliners are already booked for next year. Seems like two have been confirmed, the thirds a bit trickier. Daft is out until 2016/17. David Byrne has been performing a ton of TH material on his latest tour though still a long shot due to relationships with the rest of the band. Pearl Jam will finally have released their new album, but voices on the board seem to think theres already a bad relationship between the two parties. MGMT and Arctic Monkeys still too soon, but expect them both as subs. Id still really love to see Elton John headline a night.

We all know GV likes to have one fringe headliner every year. If the tradition continues, which of these bands are most likely to be promoted to headliner status for next year?

M83 (no news on new album, but could see pressure to keep the momentum after recent successes)

Florence & the Machine (new album in the works)

The National (everyone here thinks they got it, but OSL and Bonnaroo don't seem to think so)

MGMT (new album in works, supposed to be more out there than congratulations)

Foster the People (new album coming soon)

Fun. (they blew up, not sure when next album comes out)

Ya'll think PT was bluffing in that Stagecoach interview?

M83 & Florence seem most likely from that list above; in fact I was thinking about the possibility of the latter yesterday especially given the new focus on the "lack" of female presence. Can't really speak on The National but aren't they kind of somber? I've been chastised here for considering Foster but I think at best they'd be a sub next time around. Same with fun. I guess. MGMT needs some real momentum to headline since few people really care about their output post-2008.

Anthony hasn't even started writing new pop music. Merits aside, M83 aren't going to be headlining 2014.

Probably the National from that list. I would guess;

Friday: Outkast/Aphex Twin/Boards of Canada
Saturday: Daft Punk/The Knife/Flying Lotus
Sunday: Foo Fighters/My Bloody Valentine/Mogwai

If anything, Arctic Monkeys have been decreasing in popularity over time here in the US. They're not going to headline, ever.

Also, Phoenix right now is way more popular than Arctic Monkeys in the states. They are a proper headliner, so please STFU.

Decreasing? No way. I've been following this band since they played their first NYC show at Mercury Lounge. Every time they come back, they're playing at bigger spaces....

But you're right out about Phoenix being more popular than AM in the states! Kinda sad really...

I have no clue what their tour plans are, but if they were to play, fun. would get the Mumford and Sons spot from 2011.

Super popular, lot of radio play... 8:30 on the main stage, 3rd on the poster on their day.

If Daft Punk and Outkast were playing there is no way that the Foo Fighters would close out the festival.

Friday: co-headliners General Public and Fine Young Cannibals (after months of rumors of booking U2)
Saturday: fun.
Sunday: Tool

The junior-headliners always seem to be Coachella darlings: bands like Phoenix, The Black Keys, The Killers, Kings of Leon, and Jack Johnson, who first appeared on the Coachella poster in small font and played a tent in the middle of the day, but worked their way up after a few more appearances. I think Paul likes to showcase the bands his festival has nurtured on their way to stardom.

That rules out Fun.. Foster and The National (I think) have only played Coachella once, so it's not like they've been nurtured by the Coachella brand. MGMT's popularity has gone in the opposite direction (and it doesn't sound like their new album is going to be very mainstream-friendly), and M83 just finished that Tom Cruise soundtrack and doesn't have anything else lined up that we know about. That leaves Florence, who actually makes a ton of sense.

I'm off the Daft bandwagon. We're getting Florence/Depeche/NIN next year.

If you replace Foo Fighters with either NIN or Tool, this would be THE ultimate Coachella. I don't think I'd have to go to another one again, and would certainly go to both weekends.

Also, aside from Tom, kinda surprised Tool hasn't been mentioned as much with their new album in the works...

Most of the bands (M83, Florence, AM, M&S, Arcade Fire, The National etc...) already headlined or played Coachella 2011 and 2012. Don't need to see them again so soon.

yeah. he has to play up Stagecoach, especially with camping gone. and as far as him wanting to make Stagecoach an "event", doesn't taking away camping eliminate that possibility??
