View Full Version : Custom Flags??

Has anyone here ever used an online company to make a custom flag? I just googled this and of course came up with hundreds of companies, so I'm hoping that someone here has maybe used one of them and can give me an idea as to the pricing and quality of what they got.

Looking to get a flag made for our campsite so something like 2x3 or 3x5 I think would be best and it doesn't have to be super nice, just high enough quality to make it through a coachella weekend!

All you need to do is go to a fabric store, choose the material of your choice for the flag, then get some thicker material for the side you'll be connecting to the pole. Sew it all up and then go to an upholstery shop and ask them to throw a couple grommets in for you and you're good to go. You'll end up paying less for it than you would if you ordered online and you'll have that sense of accomplishment as it majestically waves through the air.

this has been on my to-do list for the last 3 coachellas but I never get around to it. does everyone just use PVC pipe for the flag pole?

last year we made a flag out of a pillow case we screen printed onto. dye it, print it, paint it, whatever! make it yourself and you'll love it that much more.

We use schedule 40 pvc pipe so it's a bit sturdier, then we typically try to anchor it to something (usually our structure or a car) so it doesn't bend in the wind too much. We always duct tape the fittings for an extra hold and haven't had an issue yet.

I bought this for our flag last year. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OWKELO/ref=ox_ya_os_product
It's a little flimsy, but since it's adjustable, we were able to easily lower it in the wind.

Mike and Monsterface ... how big are your flags in those pictures? Trying to get a feel for how big we want ours to be ... seems like making one is the way to go though. I just got quotes from a few companies and even just for a 2x3 flag it's $60+ depending on how many colors and how nice you want it!! That makes this choice pretty easy, haha

Mine is 3x5 and was the perfect size. We were camped in the back last year by the general store and we could see it from the ferris wheel.

Ours was also 3x5. I just bought a blank flag of amazon and decorated it, total cost including shipping was about $7. Like Robin said, we also zip tied the hell out of it. If you use pvc, dont forget to drill holes at the top to ziptie the grommets to the pvc.

I've been meaning to do this every year and never got around to it. We're finally graduating from tent camping into car camping so this might be our year to do it.

These were my groups flags last year the one on the left was mine and i just used pvc pipe, which surprisingly held up in the crazy wind during weekend 1.
The other flags were the tallest in the whole campground which was actually the easiest way for people to find us. It was an actual steel flag pole and was attached to my buddy's car.
Either way, using a flag is the best way to mark where your campsite is.

Awesome, thanks guys! Looks like 3x5 will be the go-to size. Not sure what we're gonna do for a design yet, but we're gonna be making our own now! Way cheaper compared to the $60+ for even just a 2x3 flag!

Anyone getting crafty with the flags this week? I was going to make one with the worm from Labyrinth, but then realized my husband would make fun of me all weekend if I did that. So I am working on a new one now. Probably of my avatar since I'm nostalgic for that sign.

Never got around to making a cool flag for our group but we did buy some car flags and decorated some of them. they will help our group of cars stay together a little easier thursday. we also painted them with glow paint and plan to clip them to a wire coat hanger once we park to help identify our spots at night.

Well, my group will have some flags this year, but unfortunately, my buddy who I put in charge of buying the flags forgot what "blank" meant when we bought them and we now have two flags with designs already on them, haha. Maybe we'll do some customization on top of them, but as far as a fully custom flag, I guess that's going to have to wait until next year!

I ordered 2 CUSTOM PRINTED FLAGS from this site last week for $100 total including shipping.

I think they are in China, but they said they would have them to me in 7 days. I will post pictures and update once they have arrived.

Much cheaper than any USA/Local option.

Yep, in the campground is completely fine but you cant take them inside. Because no one wants this in front of them...

My flags from last year being tested again for this year. Top is airbrushed on white fabric from JoAnns, bottom is a 5x8 from one of those online companies, forget which one or how much though.

That pole is bolted to a bushing on the roof rack so it rotates horizontal for the drive then locks upright in about 10 seconds.

I borrowed them from my dad, who owns his own construction business, so I'm not 100% sure where to buy them. But I think these are the same ones on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/MARSHALLTOWN-17-6ASU-72-Inch-Powder-Aluminum/dp/B0000224VU)

There are also these (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Marshalltown-72-in-Anodized-Aluminum-Push-Button-Handle-Sections-PB72/100580167?N=arh8#customer_reviews) at Home Depot, but I'm not sure how they will work. I'm guessing they're all basically the same

My question is, what is the best paint to use on a nylon flag? spray paint? I feel like that will chip off. any suggestions please!

I am going with felt and sewing it on. But I would use spray paint otherwise.

No worries, thanks again. How many did you connect? I bought three and was thinking of cutting the third one down to 3'. I'm either going to zip tie the hell out of it to our EZ up, or use the tire mount and slip the post through a pool noodle to save the car's paint job. I am probably over thinking it, but I know how windy it can get and 12' doesn't seem tall enough.

We either used 3 6' lengths or 2 8' lengths. I can't quite remember, and I've yet to pull them out again for this year, but when I do that I'll let you know. We used rubber bungee cords like this (https://www.easternmarine.com/index.php/catalog/product/view/id/105/s/19-epdm-rubber-strap-whooks/?gclid=CMri89DZt7YCFW7hQgodOx8AWA) and bungeed the pole to our ez up. I don't know how well your zipties work, or how big they are but that doesn't seem like a great idea to me. In strong winds, the zip ties may fail, whereas bungee cords give a little.

Last year when it got super windy (weekend 1), we took our flag down, just as a precaution. But I was watching it as the winds picked up and the flag/EZ up combo seemed to withstand the winds. As with anything, just play it by ear.

We live right down the street and didn't camp until 2009. By then, I had already been bitten by the Coachella bug, and in 2008 I sat here looking out my back door, and there it was, in all it's glory... 15' feet out and about 20' up... it was perfect, but I'd have to wait until dark to change the scenery. Now, while I'm sure a lot of college aged people, or untamed young adults do this shit all the time, but for a 47 year old woman to be clamouring up a retaining wall to heist a real estate flag from it's wall mount would be absurd. How would the home owners not notice the only hot pink flag was now missing? The others were still up, tattered and worn, but the hot pink one was new... and then gone. Yes, it was a Thursday night before they let everyone in the campground. I was ready to celebrate Coachella right along with them and after getting up the wall dressed in dark clothes, I began hoisting the flagpole up and then out of it's mount._With a pole nearly 15' long itself, this was no easy or un-noticed task... I about shit myself when Pete came up from behind and asked, "WTF are you doing?"
Obviously oblivious to a creative mind in action, I simply told him, "Just wait..." Anticipation kept me awake long enough to get a finished product before the show started the next day. Pete insisted on putting it back up so it could be seen by people waiting in line, as well as being seen on our hike home each night. When Monday rolled around, he was more surprised that the flag was still there... ("Oh, say can you see...) And as I sat at the back door detoxing from the weekend, out of the corner of my eye I see some dude jump up on the wall and begin to wrestle with the flag pole. Now, I normally might have hollered out and made the guy stop, but because my ass was tired and because I knew it wasn't gonna be easy to steal because of the pole length and risk of being seen by all the exiting cars, I sat back and enjoyed whatever was left of my weekend buzz by watching the assclown on our wall steal my stolen flag. Each year since then, we've camped and I've glanced here and there hoping to see it in someone's campsite... Nada. So, like previous years, I'll post a pic and hope that the lucky bastard who got the flag comes forth so I can give them a high five and ask how their Coachella was...
