it really is a thinker.
i mean, i guess bowie is pretty well revered around here.
all these new posters are really bringing this board to another level.
I'm almost ashamed to have posted here in the past, seeing as we're ignoring all these amazing and seemingly obvious legendary acts that could play our darling festival.

I guess everyone has, for the most part, forgotten about the classics. All these youngins want is Muse and the Killers. They have forgotten about what really matters.

Bowie was #1 on my wishlist followed my Prince but at the time I thought Bowie was a long shot. Now with the release of the single and the announcement of a new album in March, I think its a strong possibility. If not at Coachella then Bonnaroo

if he'd ever play the fields this would probably be the year. i'd be surprised if he starts releasing new albums again every few years like he used to and if he does go that route he'll be close to 70 by the time the next one comes out...

But the thing with Bowie is that he wouldnt need an album release to be asked to headline Coachella. I'm sure he is asked every year and this year is as likely as any future year.

Not to be a dick or anything but isn't Bowie pretty notorious for wanting to mainly play new stuff? He's "retired" playing old stuff a few times from what I can remember. I'm sure there's fans that'll love the new stuff but can see a 2010 MGMT moment of ppl walking away crying b/c they didn't hear the songs they wanted.

it's from NME, so the quote could always be wrong, but here it is:
"He’s fairly adamant he’s never gonna perform live again… One of the guys would say, 'Boy, how are we gonna do all this live?' and David said, 'We’re not'. He made a point of saying that all the time." - Tony Visconti, producer of the new album.

He's also pretty notorious for not releasing albums just for the sake of a tour and not touring every album. Which is exactly what he is going to do this time.

God damn... that's still ambiguous. Just because he won't tour for this album doesn't mean there couldn't be a one-off (ie Coachella)
Still, not getting my hopes up.

For what it's worth
Despite all reports to the contrary, Visconti reveals that Bowie may actually perform these songs live. “He doesn’t want to tour any more. He’s had enough of it. But he hasn’t ruled out that he might do a show. It was a relief to me to hear that he was open to that.”

In the interview with Visconti, he revealed that he blatantly lied about working on a new Bowie album for the sake of secrecy. He could be doing the same thing in saying Bowie wont be doing live shows.

I'm wondering if Festival promoters learned of Bowie's return by the same internet birthday announcement.
I would think that many headliners were already locked up and there wouldn't be "room" for David.

just more stuff -
"The members of the band and the engineers, the people who bring us coffee in the studio, everybody who was involved in this had to sign a (non-disclosure agreement) to keep this a secret. The people who played on this album, most of them have worked with David for a long time; to sign an NDA would have been unnecessary for most of them. But we had some new people and a new recording studio we didn't have an old, long-standing relationship with, so we took the precaution. Everyone had to sign it.
"No one objected; they said, 'It's just an absolute joy to be working with David Bowie.' The way we kept it a secret was on an honour system - not that we were worried about being sued or anything like that. It was so cool to be part of this club. That's what it was really about."

If you had to name one artist that epitomized Coachella, or embodied the very essence of Coachella, David Bowie would represent that archetype. Not fucking Bonnaroo... Their archetype is named after a fish.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jan/12/david-bowie-how-made-next-day
Here's the most telling hint in the article that a live show isn't out of the question:
"... despite the fact that no live dates have been announced for the forseeable future, Earl Slick says he'd like to tour the album. "Of course I would! I'm the biggest roadhog on the planet." He's not holding his breath, he says, but "as far as I'm concerned, anything he says or does could change. Nothing he does surprises me, ever. Never has, never will. When he contacted me about working on the album it was like, what's this about? 'Are you available?' Yeah, I'm available, what's going on? 'Well I wanna do some recording,' – like he was asking you to go have a cup of tea.""

All of the "regulars" that did the album or Reality tour don't seem to have any dates on the horizon. Sterling Campbell has a couple B-52 dates in February and one in June.
