Kristen Wiig
Andy Samberg
Abby Elliott

Cast Additions
Aidy Bryant
Cecily Strong

The election-themed "Weekend Update Thursday" will return for a couple of episodes as well.

Jay Pharoah is taking over impersonating Obama from Fred Armisen, which I personally think kinda sucks.

Yeah, i have no issue with there being a thread about a 30+ year old show.

Why can't there be an SNL thread, Chris?

At this point, why would there be one? To reminisce about the "good ol' years" when it was funny? I really don't care, it's just an odd thread to start now.

The odd thing about the show over the past 5 or so years isn't that the cast is to blame for the show being bad. They've actually had several talented, diverse cast members. It's the writing that's been god awful. Seth Meyers should have been fired a long, long time ago.

Belushi is definitely up there. I just think Phil Hartman was a little more versatile, and I preferred his dry humor.

As much backlash as he seems to take nowadays, Will Ferrell was one of the best cast members. I can't really think of a great cast member since he left.

Edit: In response to the Bill Hader comment above, I think he actually does a good job with his characters on Weekend Update. None of his sketches really stick out to me, though.

I've always found Hader hilarious in most of his sketches, and I've been waiting for years for him to make it big in movies. It seems like every role he just plays average white guy with a funny line or two, he really hasn't had anything to work with on the big screen.

I watch every episode of this show, and nobody in my lifetime has made this show for me like Eddie Murphy.

Maybe it's a generational thing - he was coming up as I was learning what "funny" meant - and he was so much funnier than anybody else on TV at the time - not just SNL, TV as a whole... but man, he just crushed it. Too bad he's such a weird dude that he can't keep being funny and getting along with people in real life.

Dumb question: do guests still do an opening monologue? I ask because there is no opening monologue on any of the Hulu Plus SNL epsiodes this season. And it sucks.

They do but it seems like everyone except Louie CK did a song instead of a monologue this year. This years monologues have continued the trend of being the weakest part of the show.

Was that Martin Short as Larry David? That was a damn good Larry David. What's with hating on SNL? If Coachella goes for thirty years, will it be cool to hate it too? 2011 is probably the best season of SNL since Will Ferrell. It has its lesser years, but certain skits are magical. There sure are a lot of haters on these boards considering how few of the boardies are actually getting paid to be on stage. (if any) It's a wonder some of these people like anything at all. Portlandia is also pretty cool. Put a bird on it.

Is your thesis that it is more likely for one who is a professional, on-stage performer to criticize SNL than for one who is not a paid, on-stage performer?

I was just thinking the other day how unfair it is that in so many of the politically oriented threads on this board, there sure are a lot of people hating on Congress especially considering how few of the boardies are actually elected officials themselves. (if any)

That's taking it to another level. I'd like to see someone from the board try taking their political views on the road. It just seems like there are a lot of hecklers on the board, and very few people who actually enjoy things. I like to heckle hecklers, knowing they've never tried to be anything other than a heckler their entire lives. Someone should invite these twats on stage at Coachella with a full array of instruments at their disposal, or just a mic to rattle off some jokes. They would literally get eaten alive.

Watching the Gallactica (or whatever that show is called) skit on Portlandia while using massive amounts of cocaine (we've all had our lesser times) made sense. I haven't watched that show since becoming a clean bikini, but I'm sure it's still worth a watch. You may not enjoy it if you're overly sensitive, or don't understand that there is a west coast above southern California.

SNL has been pretty weak the last two weeks. And Justin Bieber is the host & musical guest for the next new episode on February 9th (it's a re-run this week).

There is some good news though...
February 16th:
Host- Christoph Waltz
Music- Alabama Shakes

http://omg.yahoo.com/news/bill-hader-leaving-saturday-night-live-eight-seasons-142500740-us-weekly.html

Another sad SNL exit. Bill Hader announced on Tuesday, May 14, that he will be leaving Saturday Night Live after eight seasons.

"It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point," the 34-year-old actor told The New York Times. "It got to a point where I said, 'Maybe it's just time to go.'"

Hader joined SNL in 2005 and became best known for his "Weekend Update" character Stefon, as well as his impersonations of Al Pacino, James Carville, Julian Assange and many more stars. The comedic actor has also appeared in hit films like Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Adventureland.

News of Hader's departure comes shortly after Seth Meyers was named as the new replacement for Jimmy Fallon on Late Night. Meyers will reportedly work on Saturday Night Live until he takes over Late Night next year, where he will continue to work with SNL/Late Night executive producer Lorne Michaels.

"I only have to work for Lorne for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car," Meyers joked in a statement. "Twelve-thirty on NBC has long been incredible real estate. I hope I can do it justice."

Veteran SNL stars Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis are also considering departing the show.

"I think they're making their decisions and we'll know soon enough," Michaels said. "I've said what I wanted to say to both. You never keep anybody there who doesn't want to be there, and there is a right time to leave, but it's more about where they are in their lives."

When I first started watching SNL every week, it was the first season both Andy Samberg and Bill Hader were on the show. And they were in the "featuring..." part, not "Staring..." and they were both pretty much my favourite. I wish Bill Hader the best.

Also, if Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis leave, I won't really have a reason to watch the show any more.

No..! Hader was the best.. No more Stefon?! He was a good 'game show host' guy too.

That suucks, but eight seasons is a great run. I hope others don't leave (as suggested by rp). SNL has been worth the Dvr space as of late.

Time for Jay Pharoah to step up big time.

This show survived the loss of Joe Piscopo when he was its biggest star. Fucking Piscopo, people.

The 39th season of SNL returns on September 28th with host Tina Fey and musical guest Arcade Fire. This will be the 4th appearance for both Fey (as host) and Arcade Fire.

Week 2, October 5th = Miley Cyrus will be both host and musical guest
Week 3, October 12th = Bruce Willis and Katy Perry

No word yet on how Lorne Michaels will replenish the cast with the departures of Bill Hader, Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis. Seth Meyers will also depart mid-season as he sets to host Late Night.

Eminem's eyes looked bugged-out.. The first performance was really bad.

This season has been garbage. The skits seem to be developed around one or two punch lines - and those punch lines are not funny.

Keenan is still good. The rest of the cast are just not funny IMO.

I think it has been hit or miss this season because they are working with a new cast. I knew losing Bill Hader and Fred Armisen would make for some shaky weeks, but I think they have done alright. I like Bobby Moynihan is some sketches, but I dislike some of the characters he does. I think Jay Pharoah is great most of the time and Cecily Strong and Vanessa Bayer have been funny from time to time.
