My first thought was of that old Todd Snider song about a Seattle grunge band that gets famous for never playing music.

I think this could lead to some interesting youtube clips of fans "covering" songs that they've never even heard performed or recorded.

I think you used the word "interesting" when really you meant "fucking godawful shitty."

In most cases, yeah, probably. It's still an interesting gimmick. If I had even the slightest bit of musical ability, I think I'd give it a whirl.

No, it's really not.

I think it's very interesting, as long as the songs are good.

Maybe it is just me, but I think it seems lazy.

This seems to be pretty worthless for the fans

It's going to appeal to a very limited group of people, that's for sure. Beck enthusiasts who are also skilled musicians who have the time and interest to teach themselves songs they've never heard.

I haven't seen Beck live since the mid '90s, but if anything good comes out of this, I'd be curious to see his renditions in comparison to the better ones posted by fans.

Surprised at the reactions to this. I'd bet good money that if Nine In Nails or Tool did something like this their fans would be losing their fucking minds

All I know is I hope all the songs will be performed liveby Beck and bootlegged. Don't care about others' interpretations at all.

That goes without saying.

So this is a remix album of an album that doesn't exist. Got it.

I mean who is going to record these songs that I will care about? I can't think of anyone I want to hear play Beck songs except Beck. What a disappointing thing.

I think if you stop thinking of it as "Beck's new album" and instead think of it is "this thing that Beck is doing", it is much less of an affront.

Picked up my copy of Songbook yesterday. Will learn to read music today and then tell you if it is any good.

Personally speaking, I would find it a lot easier to just record the music than to go to the trouble of making that same music and then writing out the sheet music. Beck ain't fucking Mozart, it ain't like he's just dictating this shit.

And I'm pretty sure that Beck has enough famous musician friends that you'll hear some legitimate artists putting out their versions of these songs. I mean, fuck, the Scientologist connections alone...

I look forward to the forthcoming versions by Doug E. Fresh and Isaac Hayes. Or I could just go to the album playback show tomorrow.
