Not a joke. I swear.

SNOOP Dogg has officially dropped the Dogg act and upgraded his name to "Snoop Lion".

The rapper says he underwent a spiritual and artistic rebirth while in Jamaica where he was given the new moniker by Rastafarian priests.

Legally he isn't any sort of animal, of course, but must go by the name Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr.

"I want to bury Snoop Dogg, and become Snoop Lion" Mr Broadus Jr told journalists at a news conference in New York.

"I didn't know that until I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said, 'Snoop Dogg.' And he looked me in my eyes and said, 'No more. You are the light; you are the lion.' From that moment on, it's like I had started to understand why I was there."

The 40-year-old said as a result of his reincarnation, his new album will be a reggae record as he finds rap no longer "a challenge."

“There comes a point where you say I done it all, or there isn’t much more to do,” he said. “This was like a rebirth for me.

"With no disrespect to other rappers, but they can't fuck with me in rap ... I've won every accolade you can get in rap, they call me 'Uncle Snoop' in rap. When you're an uncle, it's time to find something new ... I want to feel like a kid again."

“I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated. I feel I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn’t have my third eye open, but its wide open right now.”

Broadus Jr is currently working on his fifth album, Reincarnated, which is strictly a reggae project.

Here is a video of his first reggae single, "La La La."

I'm sure I'll give it a shot via illegal download. Expectations are low, though.

“I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated."

Snoop is the reincarnation of a man who died when Snoop was 9 years old.

But whatever, I'll give it a listen.

I would much rather have snoop dogg do dub than dubstep.

So lets be thankful people.

After listening to the track, he could have chosen a different track rather than a beat already used in a Major Lazer/La Roux remix.

Now a lot of reggae borrows/reuses many tracks, I would have been more interested to see something a bit fresher rather than Diplo throw different vocals on one of his remixes.

Did anyone ripping it listen to the song up there? His voice is much better than what I expected. I dig it.

you see the people who are "disliking it" aren't complaining about the song and many havent even listened to it, they're complaining about the idea of it - so yeah, your post is irrelevant

I'm fine with him giving this a shot. Something new, right? I dont think i've heard a single from him that I liked since circa 2004.

Is that when Drop It Like It's Hot came out? This song is good. Not anything incredible, but it's surprising and satisfying considering who it is

Wow. Didn't believe it at first! He's a new man with a new lifestyle playing a new genre. I hope it goes well for him....and better for his listeners (crossing my fingers for some real root-y material).

I just noticed the "La La La" song is produced by Major Lazer. Interesting choice there but overall not a bad song. Happy he isn't going the frat boy reggae route.

This sprang to mind immediately upon hearing this announcement. Also I guess if Puffy can become P' Diddy to separate himself from his bad ass past, then Snoop can too.
