I LOVE the Olympics. Outside of the World and Euro Cups it is hands down my most favorite athletic event ever. And the summer Olympics I find more enjoyable than winter. But this is not a debate thread about what's better. It is a celebration of great athleticism.

Have you all heard of any athletes to look out for or any fascinating stories to share?

Let the games begin!!

I'm pretty excited. I love the Summer Games, especially now that the on-demand era gives us the opportunity to watch things besides gymnastics.

Also a good excuse to post one of my favorite ads ever, from '96:

My company is a sponser and we just got our new Olympic pins at work today. Now I have pins from 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012. We just had an Olympic kickoff event a few weeks ago and I met Tony Azevedo of the US water polo team.

But honestly, there is a bit of pride there seeing a local that's done so well.

Kerri Walsh grew up in my hometown and went to my high school; she was enrolled around the same time as my brother, so saw her play a few games as a kid. There's a beach volleyball court at my HS now she donated and they named after her.

My work has been consumed by Olympics for the last month. I would really not like to talk about Olympics...especially when I have to write a bajillion Olympics-related gallery captions by tomorrow.

I enjoy Ennis. The great athleticism comes primary to her looks. However, I'm on team Lolo for the 100m hurdles though. Always been a fan of hers, and the 2008 debacle was heartwrenching to watch.

M0JybqmsF9w

As far as the 100m mens, I honestly think it's just a race for 2nd and 3rd. Bolt is just a freak of nature, clearly stated. I have my own personal qualms about Yohan Blake considering the dude's my age and if I wasn't chronically injured all the time, would be my primary competition (the time he ran in the 2011 World Championships is the PR I ran 2 years ago, before my knees started dying out at random), but that's another story. My predictions are something like 1. Bolt, 2. Blake, 3. Gay. I'd love to see Asafa Powell medal once in the Olympics, but I don't believe it's going to happen.

Carmelita Jeter is slated to take the Women's 100m, although I'm sure Shelly-Ann Fraser from Jamaica will put up a good fight, too.

I'd love to see Allyson Felix actually win an Olympic gold in the 200m, though. She seems to always take the silver at the olympics but the gold in the WC.

Can't wait for 2014. In 2010 the snowboard team had two kids that I knew from high/middle school, including one dude I've known since he was 5 (Greg Bretz.) He always told my mom (who was his 2/3 grade teacher) that someday she would get to watch him in the olympics. So cool that he was right.

Gunz, you'd need more information to determine whether or not that was correct, such as his current age or the age at which he told my mom that. I'm pretty sure he was in 2nd grade in 1998, which was the first year they had snowboarding in the olympics.

Oh, and then there's that other kid we used to ski with all the time who was always a dick about how great he was. Kid knew he could conquer the world, and he told us every day. Turns out Sean White was completely right that he'd be the best snowboarder around.

No surprise that us sport mad Aussies love the Olympics.

One of my personal favourite stories is that of Anna Meares. She is a cyclist who was a gold medalist in Athens at the age of 20. After years of working toward the 2008 Olympics she suffered an horrific accident. She fractured her vertebrae as well suffered nasty burns from the velodrome surface she hit at around 70kms/hour. She showed unbelievable fortitude to recover and won a silver medal in Beijing. She is again competing and I will be cheering hard for one of my countries toughest and humble athletes at London. Just an inspirational lady.

same here, I've always preferred the winter olympics to summer and not just because of hockey (though that's a HUGE factor!!). downhill skiing, figure skating, speed skating and snowboarding are always so exciting to watch. I still enjoy the summer olympics a lot too, but I find myself getting really bored with the track and field after a few events. swimming and gymnastics are great though!!

Beating Bolt at the Jamaican trials is an accomplishment, sure, but it essentially doesn't matter. The idea is to qualify and Bolt did that. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't give max effort just to build up buzz around the race.

The condensed version of Frazz' track career: I went from an early-bloomer (adolescent years) to a nobody (high school) to a late-bloomer (around the time I turned 20) to chronically injured (2010-now). The docs say I have an abnormal, semi-permanent case of Sinnding-Larsen-Johansson syndrome, but it sounds like they just said that was the closest thing to what keeps happening with me. At any rate, I'll probably get surgery to remove the extra growth.

2012 was never my primary goal after I started running into the low 10s for 100ms. Once I broke the 10-second barrier (on 3 distinct occasions) 2 years ago, I thought about it a little, but then my shit started fucking up real bad. The thing that bothers me about Blake is that he is my age and the time that he won the WC with last year equals my PR (9.92 secs):

fvg0XuhGqqQ

TL;DR: Yes, that's what I'm saying. I was always garbage at 200 meters though. Even if my stride length is the same, and in some cases longer, than dudes who are 6+ feet, my 5'9" frame could never hold that speed down past the 150meter mark.

Greece expels Olympic athlete over racist tweets

Updated: July 25, 2012, 10:44 AM ET

ATHENS, Greece -- Triple jumper Voula Papachristou was expelled from Greece's Olympic team Wednesday for her comments on Twitter mocking African immigrants and expressing support for a far-right party.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee said Wednesday that Papachristou is "placed outside the Olympic team for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement."

Papachristou is in Athens and has not responded to calls from The Associated Press. The committee said she was to travel to London shortly before the track events start.

Papachristou's Twitter account ((at)papaxristoutj) contains several retweets and postings of YouTube videos promoting the views of Golden Dawn, a formerly marginal extreme right party that entered the Greek Parliament in the recent two national elections -- in May and June this year -- by polling almost 7 percent of the vote.

But it was her attempt at a joke Sunday that went viral. Commenting on the widely reported appearance of Nile-virus-carrying mosquitoes in Athens, Papachristou wrote: "With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!". Her tweet prompted thousands of negative comments that snowballed Wednesday.

Since anyone can access an unprotected Twitter account, Papachristou's YouTube links and retweets inevitably became known. Several of her retweets were original tweets by Ilias Kasidiaris, the Golden Dawn spokesman and one of the party's 18 Parliament members, who became notorious a few weeks ago for striking a woman Communist MP in the face and throwing water at another female MP during a TV talk show. Papachristou tweeted to Kassidiaris on his name day, last Friday, "Many happy years, be always strong and true!!!"

Papachristou's initial reaction to the negative comments, on Tuesday, was to tweet: "That's how I am. I laugh. I am not a CD to get stuck!!! And if I make mistakes, I don't press the replay! I press Play and move on!!!"

Her attitude changed completely Wednesday and she has posted five apologetic tweets in less than two hours. The last tweet, a very long one in English, which she has also posted on her Facebook account, reads: "I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.

"My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races. I would like to apologize to all my friends and fellow athletes, who I may have insulted or shamed, the National Team, as well as the people and companies who support my athletic career. Finally, I would like to apologize to my coach and my family."

Before the publication of the last tweet, Democratic Left, one of the three parties in Greece's coalition government, had published a statement assailing the "racist humor" and calling on the Hellenic Olympic Committee to expel Papachristou from the Olympics

"Let her make any miserable 'jokes' on social media while watching the games on TV. She definitely cannot represent Greece in London," the Democratic Left statement said.

Organizers display SKorea flag instead of NKorea

By FRANK GRIFFITHS
Associated Press

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -- London Olympic organizers mistakenly displayed the South Korean flag on a jumbo screen instead of North Korea's before a women's soccer match Wednesday, prompting the North Koreans to refuse to take the field for nearly an hour.

The flag flap began during player introductions when a North Korean player was introduced along with a shot of the South Korean flag.

The match against Colombia was delayed for more than an hour, and organizers apologized for the error.

"Today ahead of the women's football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag. Clearly that is a mistake," organizers said. "We will apologize to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."

The International Olympic Committee put the responsibility on London officials.

"It's a matter for the organizers," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.

North Korea and South Korea are bitter rivals. The flag mix-up comes amid high tension on the Korean Peninsula following a North Korean long-range rocket launch in April and repeated threats by Pyongyang to attack the South. Seoul and the U.S. have called the launch a cover for a test of banned long-range missile technology. North Korea says the rocket, which broke apart shortly after liftoff, was meant to put a satellite into orbit.

Wednesday's match started 1 hour, 5 minutes late. Fans were confused at first, then turned to doing the wave and finally started booing as they became increasingly restless.

An announcement was eventually made over the public address system about 20 minutes after the scheduled 7:45 p.m. (1845 GMT; 2:45 p.m. EDT) kick off, apologizing for the delay and saying it "was due to an issue behind the scenes. We're trying to resolve it and we'll keep you updated."

To pass more time, music was pumped from the speakers. Players from both teams finally emerged onto the field about 40 minutes after the match was supposed to begin. The players warmed up again for 10 minutes before they returned inside the tunnel to be led out again for the national anthems.

Flag controversies aren't new at the Olympics. At the 1992 Barcelona Games, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley from the Dream Team draped U.S. flags over their shoulders to hide a rival sponsor's logo on their jackets when they received their gold medals.

At the 2010 Vancouver Games, the Australians displayed a flag with a boxing kangaroo - the mascot for the country's team - in the athletes village, despite an International Olympic Committee rule that usually only permits official national flags to be displayed. The IOC eventually relented.

In 2000, sprinter Cathy Freeman caused a stir when she took a victory lap after winning the 400-meter final at the Sydney Games draped in the Aboriginal flag, which was not recognized as an official national flag by the IOC.

Also in 2000, North and South Korean athletes marched together at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics under the unified Korea flag, sparking a standing ovation. But with relations deteriorating in the years since, each country insists on a separate flag.

Last month, there was another mix-up in Britain. British field hockey officials apologized to the South African women's team for playing the apartheid-era national anthem before one of its matches at the London Cup, a warm-up event for the Olympics.

The event's organizer, Great Britain Hockey, said it was an administrative mistake and offered a "full and unreserved apology."

All the NBC mobile apps suck, but all the London 2012 Official apps (http://m.london2012.com/mobileapps/)are great. The one I recommend most is the "Official Results App". If you are looking for a simple schedule and just the right amount of drill-down into individual sports or athletes, it's pretty solid.

The DVR was invented for the opening ceremony. I wouldn't watch it live. NBC's delaying it anyway, but I'd still DVR it and speed through the highlights on Saturday.

THERE WILL BE NO GYMNASTICS SHIT TALKING!!! it's going to be weird without sveltana there to drama things up. either way, i'm excited!!! i just hate having to watch fucking swimming. though in general i'm not a big fan of watching racing sports. though i thought i heard that if phelps gets three gold medals, he'll have the most gold medals of anyone in the olympics ever.

i also wish you didn't have to block out such large chunks of time on your DVR to record shit. guess i'll be cleaning my dvr this weekend.

any hints on the opening ceremonies? all i heard was on NPR this morning that there will be grass, goats, and beckam. i just thought it was hysterical that the ambassador to london said that it won't be like china's and they are conscious of the economy and won't spend much. where was that attitude during the jubilee?

The opening ceremony should be about 4:30 PM Pacific Time. I'm pretty sure, at least, because I have it on 5:30 PM Mountain Time on my schedule.

Most of the events are at a reasonable time for Americans, especially all the swimming and gymnastic events (which all seem to be around 5 or 6 PM Mountain). Some of the soccer and basketball games are in the early morning, though.

What are everyone’s feelings on NBC delaying big events for primetime? I’m ambivalent on the idea. With traditional American sports, I would never watch a football or basketball game after I knew the outcome, but for some reason I don’t mind this with the Olympics.

Opening, Closing ceremonies won't be livestreamed...

NBC announced Tuesday that the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will not be streamed live online, although all the other athletic events will be for the first time ever.

“It was never our intent to live stream the Opening Ceremony or Closing Ceremony,” said Gary Zenkel, president of NBC Olympics. “They are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large primetime audiences that gather together to watch them. We will be providing clips and highlights of each ceremony online so viewers know what to look forward to in primetime on NBC.”

Even though Olympics fans will get to see every round of all 32 sports live on the web and on mobile devices, they won’t necessarily get NBC commentary during the livestreams. Some of the live online coverage will simply be from pool cameras, watching the action.

Yeah, I think all the NBC news channels show the Olypmics. Earlier in the day (especially in the morning) they do a decent job of showing all the different stuff. But then some of the channels will go to their regular programming. If you look here (http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv-listings/index.html), you can see when they are showing stuff. You can even see the schedule separated up into the different sports, which is pretty helpful. Still, they don't broadcast everything, and even if you tune in for something on the schedule, they might be showing something else instead. Also, it isn't helpful when they call a block on the schedule as "Olympic Event" instead of separating programs into specific events.

yeah. was bummed i had to upgrade our dish programming for the month to get all these extra channels, figure it's worth whatever the prorated amount will be, though, to have access. random stuff i've watched so far has been women's handball, badminton, archery, and table tennis. love the wide shots on archery when you get to see the loft of the arrow, i thought it was much more of a full power full speed right up the middle kinda thing, not this rainbow type shot. also gotta love the faces they make when they pull the string up to it.

Yeah, def. more fun to watch when there are local ties involved. Was driving down the street a couple weeks ago and saw a sign for April Ross, didn't know who she was, turns out she is a beach volleyball player from Costa Mesa, they talked about them training down in Laguna at Emerald Bay to try and match the sand at the olympics. My heart will always be with my former classmate Misty, though.

yeah I played against her a while back. Went to USC. She is a good player. I get so excited for the swimmers! They are kicking some major butt :) Then again I am not surprised. There are so many swimmers that went into the Olympics the last few times they offered the head coach Frank Bush the USA coaching job.

Same here. Not that I was a classmate of hers but I've been following her for a long time now. My brother used to play Club Soccer with the son of your Principal. He used to always come up to us during the games and would always tell us about her. He would always say watch out for the name Misty May, she is going to become the greatest female player. why is Great Britain competing as Great Britain and not as the United Kingdom?

I think I saw in one of the track and field qualifiers that a Northern Ireland competitor was representing Ireland instead of Great Britain. I don't know if that is why, but since it is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland," maybe they want to distinguish those representing Great Britain against the Northern Irish who are representing Ireland.

The Olympics are just some european nobility view of what sports should be, rather than what sports really are. Baseball isn't in the olympics any more. Rugby. Cricket. Squash. These are international sports with considerable followings that are excluded. Meanwhile, we have sailing, fencing, rowing, shooting and dressage. Fuck that.
