It has begun. Really? Whatever, let us begin another year of discussing poor billing decisions, practicing our shocked faces for when Daft Punk is on the real lineup, and pointing out how they spelled Armin van Buuren's name wrong.

Deadmau5, Skrillex, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, Sasha & Digweed, Steve Aoki, Rusko . . . it's like a goddamn nightmare come to life.

For whoever created this . . . there aren't enough doorknobs in the world to give you the sack beating you deserve.

You might want to remove this one before all the purists freak out.

On another note, whoever made this one clearly scanned the board because it's pretty much whatever acts were on the first page of the Rumors forum this past week.

Also, this is from the Monklish blog comments. Fight me.

I guess it is possible for the Sahara lineup to be as embarrassing as this year's was. Yikes.

So much rubbish, but there's enough worth seeing to make me consider it. If Lush did another show somewhere doable, I'd just go to that instead.

Personally, I share the sentiments of some. The lineup has few and far between acts that excite. The color is nice though...

Under closer inspection, there's quite a lot I would want to see. But of those 40 acts, only a few would generate any true excitement. Enough for me to attend, but I would opt for a European festival and a solo Lush show if that was doable.

Yeah there are a few gut-wrenching names on there, but in between those, I found a lot that I would definitely see. I am just a short drive up I-10 though, so I would hold on to my pass for sure for this.

Boourns
06-12-2012, 11:16 AM
Yeah, total gut-wrenching face-palmers.

I have a policy to not attend an event that features the black keys or skrillex. Almost broke it this year for pulp, and the combination of lush/daft punk/bat for lashes/mono would probably get me there.

Danger would not be that high but I wouldn't mind.

Rolwolf
06-12-2012, 11:21 AM
This is fairly reasonable. Headliners include a mega-superstar who may or may not “fit” Coachella, a rare act everyone’s wanted for years, and someone on Friday who lots of people will call a lazy booking. Undercard has 2-3 rare acts/reunions per day, lots of indie rock, lots of repeat performers, and a Sahara lineup everyone will hate.

I guess I would be happy with this lineup. Not thrilled, but there’s enough worth seeing to make it worth the money and trip to the desert.

She has headlined Glastonbury already so it's not really stooping low at all. I mean, it's not Incubus low...

You remove Sasha and Digweed from that list, sir.

My only experience with them was Sasha at Bonnaroo in 2006. I wasn't a fan. That said, if they were the "big" EDM name playing after a headliner on Friday night, I wouldn't hate it on the level of all those others. Mea culpa.

Is there a fake poster generator somewhere?

Alright true enough. If they book Queens of the Stone Age to go against her then I'm cool with it

travelfan
06-12-2012, 12:13 PM
Meh, I didn't think this one was that bad, Daft Punk obviously is enough to get me there, and in terms of "life list"/rare acts that people gush over, you've got: Culture Club, Aphex Twin, Lush, The Stone Roses, Fiona Apple, Sasha/Digweed, Pet Shop Boys, Al Green, Ray Davies. And that's from just the top three lines. Awful Sahara. I am praying they at least throw some 2ManyDJs/Boys Noize acts in there, mainstream enough but still good. But let's be real, this is probably close to realistic in terms of the mainstream/Pitchfork/music nerd ratio.

Cannot wait for the following fake poster cliches:
1. Overly stacked-chella
2. LMFAO as a subheadliner-chella
3. Music purist's wet dream-chella

Bring 'em on.

travelfan
06-12-2012, 12:14 PM
Also, of course, #4: Used the wrong font-chella.

captncrzy
06-12-2012, 12:16 PM
WOOO PET SHOP BOYS

Oh, wait, this isn't real by a mile. And seriously--too fucking soon for this shit. Cant we just wait until it's a bit closer? At least we can pretend that there's a chance it might be real when the festival is a mere 6 months off versus 10.

She's not my thing, and I already knocked her off my life list when I took my 7th grade girlfriend to a Destiny's Child concert, but the reviews from her Glastonbury set were overwhelmingly positive. I don't think GV will or should book her, but there are worse potential headliners. I'd say she belongs there over Madonna or Gaga.

You're absolutely right. I should put him in the Matchbox 20 spot, just under Usher, and then move Asher Roth up to his current spot.

Oh wait. That's your poster.

travelfan
07-22-2012, 02:28 PM
But in all seriousness, you're probably right. I just based the upper line billing on where/when they'd play, and had Reed at sunset outdoor so just threw him in the billing order for that slot. Although Leonard Cohen's billing is probably a better indicator.

Then the undercard is billed essentially by either Last.fm listener rankings and whatever band would fit on the end of the line. I am now convinced half of Coachella's WTF billing disasters are because the band name was just the right length to fill in a line.

Thanks man. I was going for "best case but still realistic", a la 2010. Wanted to throw some curveballs (Justin Timberlake, Sex Pistols, Bobby Womack, Fine Young Cannibals, etc) that hadn't been discussed or speculated. Turns out it's fucking difficult given the combined music nerdery of these forums hah. I had a lot of fun with this, although the graphic design was a bitch because I've never worked with a graphic design program before.

I know jack shit about minimal techno, and only threw on the Enter part because the line looked empty without it. If it's a special stage experience, then my b. I made the assumption that he's going against deadmau5 on the main, and Digweed is going on against Timberlake right before. I'm giving you EDMheads Squarepusher --> Boys Noize --> Digweed --> Hawtin and letting you take back the Sahara. I pictured Hardwell as the latest afternoon/sunset Sahara set before bros camp out for Timberlake/deadmau5. And yes, I thought about stage assignments...FML. This close to making set times.

Really?! you're gonna tell me you've never noticed Coachella booking legends below hipster bands with 1 or 2 albums? especially solo acts? Look, tell me the last time the act that played the Outdoor at sunset that was on the first 2 lines, cuz i'm fairly certain it's never happened. Outdoor sunset acts are usually 3rd or even 4th lines, so the booking fits.

Solo acts are never billed as high as the group they are most known for:
Pulp subheadlined, but Jarvis Cocker was on the, you guessed it, third line. (not to mention Outdoor sunset)
Gorillaz headlined, Blur was 2nd line, but Damon Albarn's The Good The Bad & The Queen was yup, third line.
Faith No More subheadlined, but Mike Patton was on the 5th line
Rage Against The Machine headlined, but Zach's One Day As A Lion was 4th line (& Tom Morello 6th).
Oasis headlined, but Noel Gallagher was 2nd line (under Bon Iver and David Guetta)
Bright Eyes subheadlined, but Conor Oberst was 3rd line

MIA over Chem Bros, Madness third line under M83 and Amon Tobin, Buzzcocks 5th line after A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu third line under Steve Angello, Duran Duran 2nd line under The Strokes, Sven Vath third line under Axwell, Air & Happy Mondays 2nd line over Willie Nelson & Crowded House & the Roots, Vampire Weekend billed 3rd over the Specials and Echo & the Bunnymen and Johnny Rotten's Public Image Ltd, MGMT over Devo, Lupe Fiasco 3rd line over Public Enemy's 4th line, Booker T billed 5th line under Turbonegro, Mumford & Sons billed 2nd line, over the London Suede & Big Audio Dynamite & Erykah Badu & Bright Eyes. Is Throbbing Gristle bigger than X? No. But it's a bigger get (even if it proved to not be a draw, at all).

Jeff Mangum third line, under Miike Snow
Lauryn Hill third line, under Interpol
Noel Gallagher under Bon Iver
Les Claypool 5th line, under Major Lazer, Dirty Projectors, Gossip
Paul Weller (of The Jam) 3rd line, under Lupe Fiasco and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Bob Mould (of Husker Du) 6th line, under Para One & Surkin and the Bloody Beetroots
all solo artists known for the bands they used to perform with, all billed low.

Leonard Cohen, 3rd line (under Franz Ferdinand). Is Eddie Vedder solo or even David Bryne bigger than Cohen? No, i wouldn't say so. You could make the case that Vedder & Byrne are bigger than the solo acts listed above (i would disagree), and I would counter that the acts listed higher than Vedder & Byrne are bigger than those acts that were listed ABOVE the above solo acts. Not to mention that they'd all be bigger draws (if not gets) than Vedder & Byrne. Be honest, how many there would give a fuck about Vedder's solo album? Or David Byrne's solo work? Everyone there would be waiting for those 2 or 3 Pearl Jam/Talking Heads songs and you know it. And the whole board would bitch how awful the set was if they didn't.

Widespread Panic over White Stripes
they billed The Strokes and Mumford & Sons on the 3rd line the same year Strokes co-headlined Coachella
(billed 12th overall at roo, 4th at chella)
of course, they billed David Bryne above Snoop Dogg (who co-headlined Coachella), Al Green, Elvis Costello. which gives even more reason to bill him lower.
Black Keys (as a subheadliner) billed above Neil Young (and also Buffalo Springfield)
and they billed the Beach Boys under that band that does that 'Creep' song..

Lollapalooza:
The Killers over Beastie Boys and over Jane's Addiction twice
Kings of Leon over Lou Reed
Ben Harper over Iggy & the Stooges
Snow Patrol over Patti Smith

To make a (semi) realistic poster...

1. Download a free graphic design program, I used Gimp.
2. Drop a Coachella poster of your choice into the program. Use the paint brush to brush out all text, and if the poster is multi-colored (like 2012), use a gradient brush and go line by line, selecting colors that are in the back of each line of font. It might look a little janky, but when you put text over it you won't really notice.
3. Bring the poster into iPhoto. Change the tone, exposure, etc. of the blank poster until you get the color and vibe you are looking for.
4. Next, use Word. Drop the edited photo in, and use WordArt boxes to write text on top of the Coachella photo. Use the Eurostile font, play with different sizes for different billed names, and use the "circle" from Symbols to make the dot between names.

There you have it. Took me only a couple hours over a week to make mine, and I had never used a graphic design program before so most of that time was spent figuring out how to do certain things. If you have, it should be child's play. I was surprised how simple it was.

I will literally get nothing done for the rest of the day. Thanks a lot.

Have at it. Also, use the color (or closest one) of the little date boxes for the "dot" colors, as they virtually always match. And always make "the" and "and" smaller than the line font, and make sure you have the right number of Sahara acts. Blocking out the main Main/Outdoor/Sahara/night Mojave slots gave me the right "starpower" for the billed lines since I was aiming for realism, and for billing I used a combination of Last.Fm listeners and Facebook like (Last.fm for indie stuff, Facebook for Sahara cheese) but made exceptions, especially for overseas acts, rare acts, and acts that had a million+ listeners but are not really that relevant anymore (The Bravery). You'll have a blast.

Unless you're saying that making fake posters is a waste of time. Well, they're also not really a touring band, they're a protest group. Even if they don't go to jail, I don't think they're being let out of the country, and if they do, they're probably not coming to a big outdoor festival.

Their radio show on Indie 103.1 was great, but other than that, nothing. There also seemed to be a long period where they were doing nothing but DJ sets for years everytime I saw them booked for something.

The original bass player for the Kinks has passed. There has been 15 or so members over the years. I think they can still get away with being called "the kinks." I'm not really familiar with Husker Du though.

EDIT* I doubt the Kinks will ever reunite. The two brothers hate each other.

I don't think the Davies' brothers really hate each other any more. It seems like their break-up is more just stubborn habit at this point. They even make generalized references of a potential reunion in interviews every now and then. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they reunite as The Kinks someday, but (of course) the likelyhood of it happening at Coachella is small.

No one from Husker Du is dead, and they don't hate each other, either. Bob Mould and the other main song-writer even took the stage together a few years ago and played some Husker Du songs at a benefit show (for Soul Asylum's bassist, who died of cancer). Their break-up was more about moving in different directions in their lives, and for Mould to get away from the drug and booze environment surrounding the band. Still, this one probably won't happen, but that's kind of the point of surprise reunions.

30min is too much effort to put into a couple posts in a thread that consists wholly of fake posters created by boardies? wow. that would yield pretty shitty posters with less than 30min worth of effort. Unless you're saying that making fake posters is a waste of time. It's a much better use of time to post in a hundred different threads telling everyone they're idiots, rather than explain it in one.

It's a much better use of time if it's short and meaningless, like all of your posts. oh this^

I think Edward Sharpe, Phoenix, Pretty Lights, Das Racist, Crystal Method, XX, Mau5, Atmosphere, Tyler, Cat Empire, Rebelution, Grizzly Bear, Panda Bear are some good guesses...Skrilly is gonna be there, if he's not i'll be (pleasantly) surprised- same with Aoki and the like for the ravey boppers' name recognition:(

David Gilmour and Roger Waters play a show together every once in a while, but there is definitely no love lost between them.

Bob has written quite a few bitter songs about Grant. He has hardly gotten over it.

I would love to see a reunion of all three of them, but I don't think I'll ever see them together again.

Just weird that that's their SF date. I guess their Sacramento and Santa Cruz dates could satisfy diehards, but you'd think a band of their size would have booked Shoreline (near Palo Alto), HP Pavilion (San Jose), or Oracle Arena (Oakland) for a Bay Area/SF performance. Maybe they are an Outside Lands headliner and they will do their LA show(s) in conjunction with that? Otherwise I gotta hope that somebody better than David Guetta is playing the Sahara the same night...
