View Full Version : Heavy Metal/ Hard Rock wishlist for 2013

I know that in the past, Coachella seems to shy away from heavier acts. With that caveat, I'd like to see any of the below on the 2013 lineup:

Queens of the Stone Age
Probot
Mastodon
Baroness
Kylesa
Torche
Opeth
Meshuggah
Gojira
Dethklok (srs.)
Red Fang
Deftones
High On Fire
Converge
Wolves in the Throne Room
Pelican

...and so on. Please?

Any? Really? Mastodon & Baroness have already decimated Coachella crowds with late-night sets to thunderous applause. Pretty certain the festival not only survived, but thrived afterwards. Also, there are few heavy rock / metal acts that would receive a warmer welcome to the grounds than QOTSA, Meshuggah, & Boris. Got any suggestions? Or are would you prefer the likes of Owl City as a substitute to, say, OPETH.

I was surprised not to see either Boris or Liturgy on last year's poster.

Larry Farnsworth
05-21-2012, 08:36 AM
Yeah, Liturgy in particular suddenly occupies the "Pitchfork-approved metal band" slot that I would imagine has a place at Coachella. That said, (IMO) they're not all that great. I could see Baroness being back next year; they've grown in leaps and bounds, and their new album will be out this summer. I think that they've got the best shot.

stinkbutt
05-21-2012, 08:51 AM
Baroness was on during the day, one of the first acts I saw of 2010

There have been a ton of threads about this, and given that Coachella has completely ignored metal the past 2 years I wouldn't get my hopes up

kreutz2112
05-21-2012, 09:15 AM
I'd take Wolves In The Throne Room and/or High on Fire over Baroness. Both have recently released albums and tour semi-often. But really, can we just have ONE metal band this year?

I can't imagine Down costs that much to book. Slayer probably won't happen for this reason, but I don't see why Down isn't a possibility. It's not like they have a huge tour and they've been pretty consistently an earlier-in-the-day act at festivals they've played. When they were orignally on the Bonnaroo 2009 lineup they were billed very low.

i am not discounting the power of those bands. i am only suggesting what i think will fit into GV's mold.
GWAR - NO FING WAY, even tho i would like a take-home aborted baby mold.
Slayer - nah, but maybe Sepultura?
Converge - don't know them so I cant comment
Tool - would love to see them, but i believe Puscifer is a better fit.
I could see Maiden simply because they are metal gods, but they would have to headline and that wont happen.

The best band I have seen at coachella is dillenger, baroness was a little weak so overall not trying to argue with bu darkness is not a band that needs to be in this discussion.

I wouldn't discount Mastodon (latest album pushed them a little higher, they're probably top of the new wave of American metal at this point) or Baroness (tons of hype after their last album, new album coming this July and getting a bunch of press from the Pitchfork set). Regarding Rush, yes, definitely! Their music is complex and cerebral like a lot of Coachella bands, and they've only grown in relevance. They still put out vital new music. Clockwork Angels is being reviewed really well, and they are playing it in its entirety on this tour. Not many "Classic Rock" bands can pull that off.

It'll probably never happen, but I could see them as a Friday night headliner on the Main Stage, as long as Sat. and Sun. are slotted with more obvious Coachella bands to balance it out. If the weekend was sprinkled with bands like QOTSA, Perfect Circle, and/or Tool, maybe Les Claypool too, Rush would make sense.

I think you're confusing Rush with bands relegated to the County Fair circuit. These guys play arenas on their own. They just did two nights at Gibson Amphitheater in LA. They are continuously one of the top money making tours every year. They continually put out new music that actually stands up to their older output. Many fans of SOME of the bands that appear at Coachella, mainly the more instrumentally inclined bands, appreciate Rush. I remember how dissappointed people were at Roger Waters being booked, and he owned it that year for most.

While I disagree that their new stuff holds up well with their best older stuff, I don't think the money would be there for them. Their cheapest ticket at Gibson was 100+, which means that the minimum gross was likely 750k. I doubt PT can or desires to match that. Plus, adding Rush likely adds limited cachet, again not justifying an outlay in the range necessary to book them with the radius requirement. In short, not enough bang for the buck and vice versa.

Very well stated. You're right, their newest stuff isn't as strong as Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves, but they've settled into a strong veteren status that justifies playing a lot of the new stuff without boring fans. Their new album would be, in the Rush world, equivalent to Bowie's Heathen or Reality albums, or Radiohead's King of Limbs.

Set length for a festival?

It seems Coachella has been more generous with headliner set time length since 2008. Rush usually plays 3 hours with an intermission. Maybe a solid 2 hours for a fest? Again, probably won't happen at all, but I would have a freakin orgasm if it did.
