It's a small farming community located just west of Indio. The Valley the festival in is known as the Coachella valley. The name is derived from the spanish word for "Seashell".

Coachella Valley, arid region, SE Calif., N of the Salton Sea. Water is brought into the region by artesian wells and by the Coachella Canal (123 mi/198 km long), a branch of the All-American Canal built between 1938 and 1948; more than 100,000 acres (40,500 hectares) have been irrigated. Truck crops, dates (the majority of U.S. production), citrus fruits, and alfalfa are grown in the region. The products are shipped from the city of Coachella, which serves as a distribution point for the valley. The tourist resort of Palm Springs is nearby.

Coachella is a van gough painting. Swirls of dust blowing, leaving streaks of color and blending trees and people with the earth, sky, mountains and desert. The moon lingering above and high levels of love radiating from a gathering of beautiful souls.

Wrong

That was from three and a half years ago and now I partially recant that statement.
Coachella isn't as bad as people in Palm Springs and Cathedral City have made it out to be.
My band has played numerous times in Coachella and for the most part, it's always a good time out there.
