In case you haven't seen this shared like wildfire on your own Facebook walls, here's a moving piece by Invisible Children:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc

The "Cover The Night" Initiative is on April 20. I'll be lucky enough to be at Coachella Weekend 2 on that day, and would be thrilled if my fellow Weekend 2'ers could join me in showing our support for this cause, as an effort to show the world that Coachella and music can contribute to change. Hopefully this won't get tagged as spam, as it's truly an incredible cause, and an amazing chance to become involved in an historic moment in our modern world.

We're all similar in our love of amazing music, and attending Coachella proves that - I'm sure we're all similar in wanting to be a part of change as well.

Oh God. Are you one of those obnoxious recent grads traveling in a van across the country to spread the Invisible Children gospel? I dated one of your predecessors. Well... dated is too strong a word for it. Anyway, good job on spamming this board and many other sites today. Your plan worked magnificently. It was annoying as hell and now thousands of people will associate IE with this annoyance and avoid supporting the (worthy) cause. So, effectively, you've contributed to the kidnapping and death of hundreds of Ugandan children today. Good job, dummy. Also, next time you guys are planning spamageddon, maybe make sure your servers can handle the extra traffic.

Here are alternative viewpoints to Invisible Children, the non-profit fueling the #Kony2012 campaign. I personally do not agree with these authors' critiques and think they are poorly thought out.

http://visiblechildren.tumblr.com/po...we-got-trouble
http://www.wrongingrights.com/2009/0...idea-ever.html

The authors critiques the methods of IC as 1. supporting Uganda military 2. misleading use of data to capture the attention of the public 3. perpetuating the hierarchy within race with the white man as the savior 4. encouraging Kony's retaliation by killing children 5. poorly spent money better used in alternative advocacy.

Whether you agree with those points are not are up to you but I think it is always good to think of both sides. This is a successful viral campaign and a legitimate question is where will all the money soon-to-be-raised be spent? Still, kudos to them for producing a compelling piece that inspires the public to get behind their message which is for a good cause, one of many that are out there, some domestically. I hope IC puts some of their funds to generate awareness to other causes as well.

I watched the video. It's a human tragedy for sure. It reminded me of the Lost boys of the Sudan. Kudos to IC for bringing light to a situation many people do not know about. If anything, videos like this inspire people to do independent research on these types of situations and become less ignorant to the sufferings of others around the world.

Also, I know there are many controversies surrounding the Kony 2012 media campaign and the Invisible Children organization, if you are curious for a little more info and my opinion on it, check out my blog: http://shelbyrusu.wordpress.com/

Should we not pursue a solution to an issue merely because it is imperfect?

Having been to Uganda some 10 years ago or so, the arrest and trial of Kony would help the country and the surrounding countries. Even then Kony was some sort of mythical figure. I don't think that area can move on until Kony is out of the picture, it isn't like he can be ignored and he goes away.

You can argue about the spamming tactics used on this campaign, but ultimately that seems a rather trivial criticism compared to the slaughter and enslavement of thousands of people.

I watched the well produced video and I want him daid! What a horrible person (understatement).

But you bitches say its a fad, we're way late, and (according to elsewhere) the organization uses most of its profits for staff salaries, film production, and traveling.

Anyhoo, I think i'll print out posters rather than pay for a press kit they show in the video.

Weekly, please educate us what IC is about. I've done some brief research on IC but not very familiar with the non-profit. I know IC was started by some college kids and are paid a decent salary but nothing outrageous for non profits. Nothing shows of any fraud, laundering, or any other such misdoings by IC. The biggest concern is possibly its manipulation of facts to exaggerate the crimes of Kony. But In the end, he is one of the top wanted international war criminals and the severity of his crimes are real regardless if they are represented accurately or not. I believe most critics are upset at IC's appeal to human emotions to trigger a tipping point which to some, makes it artificial and the loyalists sheep in their eyes.

To address the importance of capturing a war criminal who is in hiding. I studied at the Hague for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the capture of war criminals is more then just to eliminate the threat. It is more about the fact finding to discover the truth of the conflicts and to let people tell their stories through testimony. The court proceedings is aired closed circuit and is televised online and in the country affected. The cases last years and is a source of closure for a country affected by egregious crimes and is heavily covered in those countries. Different then how the US would progress (which is another discussion) but the method has its legitimate purpose.

Invisible Children only uses 32 cents out of every dollar to actually, you know, DO something good to help the world. That's also without an external auditor so those numbers may be inflated. I'm PUMPED that some people are giving a shit about something in the world, but there are far better organizations and charities that do similar work with better oversight.

Also, Kony has been out of the picture for years and the LRA has been out of Uganda for about 5 years too. Why is IC so focused on Kony when Ugandans are not? IC is just banking on the fact that most of its teen and young person demographic won't pick up any Ugandan history books and instead buy some bracelets and inflate someone's wallet.

I doubt Ugandans have forgotten and forgiven Kony. We only have some idea what has happened. Only once a full trial is held with discovery will Ugandans and the world get the full story and closure. The cause is not insignificant, maybe other causes should take notice on how to effectively fundraise in today's age [see Obama].

Well, Kony2012 is a trending topic worldwide right now on twitter and has been one of the more effective campaigns recently to get information out and to get people to care about a cause. People may see that only 32cents of the dollar is going to the cause while the rest is used to support the infrastructure, which I agree should be improved, but there are other bigger name causes that spend more money overall with less traction. Again maybe how we view what is considered effectively spent money should be broadened. With the new attention from the public, IC will be under more scrutiny if it is to continue to maintain its funding.

Regarding the 1/3 of donations actually going to support Ugandans:
The primary purpose of the organization is to raise awareness so that people are informed about the situation and moved to take action, primarily by calling/writing your congressman about the issue. According to how popular this video is, I'd say they are doing a great job in that department.

Regarding the salaries of the founders:
The amount spent relative to their total donations is not that far off from most other top-tier non-profits.

In the end, those turned off were likely never going to be supporters of the cause. Regardless, the number of gained supporters v. lost supporters justifies such viral tactics from a marketing standpoint. Uganda to KONY2012: Shut the fuck up, ignorant white hipster douches.

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2012/03/09/some-ugandans-critical-of-kony-2012/

KAMPALA, Uganda–A 30-minute video about the alleged atrocities of Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army has been criticized by a cross section of Ugandans.

Entitled “Kony 2012,” the film has exploded into a global Internet sensation, and focuses on allegations that African rebel leader Kony has abducted children and used them as pawns during warfare. In Uganda, the video has attracted criticism across the political spectrum for sensationalizing an old conflict that many say is more complicated than it’s made out to be.

“Both sides are guilty of massacres, but the film makers decided to concentrate only on LRA,” says Norbert Mao, an opposition party leader, who appears in the film.

Although Kony attracts wide attention in the U.S., Ugandans who have watched the video have been largely unimpressed. They say the video is outdated, and unhinged from reality on the ground.

For Okot Patrick, a local government official in the Ugandan northern town of Gulu, from where Kony hails, the rebellion no longer is an issue. Officials are focusing on following the resettlement of more than 2.5 million people, formerly displaced by the war.

“People have more pressing problems such as poverty and diseases,” he said.

Due to low levels of Internet penetration in the East African nation, Ugandans have been slower in realizing the availability of the video. But by Friday, Ugandan social interactive sites were awash with messages about the video, describing it as a work of “outsiders” who were pretending to know more about Ugandan problems.

Godfrey Arinitwe, a Ugandan blogger, says the filmmakers try to present a serious subject in a flimsy way.

They are making “Kony appear so big like the whole world is about to come to a stop on his orders,” he says.

The Ugandan president’s office welcomed the campaign which seeks to raise awareness towards the plight suffered by the LRA victims. However, it warned against misrepresenting facts on the ground.

“We are grateful for renewed efforts which seek to contribute to the arrest of Joseph Kony and the elimination of the LRA…the Government of Uganda however, would strongly urge that any awareness campaign fully takes into consideration the current realities of the situation.” the presidential spokesman said in a statement.

So, apparently the gay guy who narrates the Kony video (Jason Russell) was arrested for masturbating in public/being under the influence of something.
That's not a good look...

NBC San Diego is reporting that Jason Russell, the co-founder of Invisible Children, the advocacy group behind the "Kony 2012" viral video, was detained at 11:30 am on Thursday morning for allegedly masturbating in public.

TMZ reported Friday afternoon that law enforcement officials don't plan to bring charges against Russell.

According to TMZ, Russell was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Police also told TMZ that he was vandalizing cars.

NBC San Diego released a statement from Ben Keesey, the organization's CEO, noting that the "past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us," and that the toll had "manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday."

Russell, a co-founder of Invisible Children, created the 30-minute film featuring himself, his son, Gavin, and a former child soldier from Uganda named Jacob. Last week, the film received millions of views and rocketed Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, to fame. However, many were quick to respond with criticisms of the film and the organization's spending practices.

Jason Russell is described on the organization's website as a "grand storyteller and dreamer" who dreams of "redefining the concept of humanitarian work" and having "nine more children" with his wife.

A phone call to the San Diego Police Department department had not been returned at the time of publication, and the phone line at Invisible Children was not operating.

"Kony 2012" has received nearly 100 million views on Vimeo and YouTube.
