you really think they're underrated? I'm pretty sure they've been getting praise since their first album.

Well, they have, but not the heaps of praise and adulation they deserve.

Really? Their set opening for Metric blew everyone away last year, and I was the only person there who knew their music. People were even yelling for encores and giving up their front row spots just so they could go buy the CD. God, that was good times.

Yeah me and my friends were all excited to see the crew that used to be The Unicorns and we even got a pictures from them while they were setting up stuff. It's just my opinion that they were kinda bland, it was really small venue, like 60 people, and still they didn't manage to excite the crowd. And return to the sea wasn't very eventful either in my opinion, but hey to each his own.

Powderfinger

'My Happiness' by Powderfinger is one of my all time favorite songs and it probably brings back more memories than any song i've ever loved.

Also I have to say David Gray only for the reason that I don't think nearly enough people realize how truly amazing he really is.

i have a reverse underrated.

mary j blige.

adored by the "mainstream" cognoscenti, yet virtually no indie love, despite being one of the finest soul singers of the last twenty years. i guess it's because she works somewhat in a pop vein and are songs aren't always all that. but at least she means it. she really really does. and goddamn it, what a VOICE. really. i'm a card carrying member of team blige anyway.

When you think about it - there are a lot of under-rated bands out there, always have been I guess, for numerous reasons - under-rated by critics or under-rated by people in general. There's also the England to America loss of promotion and distribution, which has always doomed bands for us Americans (like me) who fancy themselves a bit anglofile.

Here are some I think fit the bill. (past and present)

DODGY (never even got a US record deal, shameful)
SUPER FURRY ANIMALS (still the best, most unique, small pop band around)
CATHERINE WHEEL (always under-rated)
TINDERSTICKS (songwriting doesn't get any better, or more moody)
BOO RADLEYS (amazing songwriting and tunes that back up the skills)
MANSUN (not that one, the band from England)
THE DEARS (the other, Arcade Fire)
NICK HEYWARD (amazing singer songwriter)
BRITISH SEA POWER (crazy they aren't bigger)
ED HARCOURT (amazing singer songwriter)
THE OCEAN BLUE (always good)
LOVE AND ROCKETS (the masses lump them into one-hit-wonder status)
SPIRITUALIZED (misunderstood, Jason tends to leaves people cold - a mistake)
SOFT MACHINE (often over-looked in genre)
SOUTH
MOLOKO
LES SAVY FAV
KINGS OF CONVENIENCE
SUNSHINE UNDERGROUND
808 STATE
HOWLIN MAGGIE
ADULT
THE WONDERSTUFF

dont think thats necessarily true. a bunch of people on here could think a band is underrated but most other music consumers who are less intelligent may not like or know them.

To me, it's more a question of proportion. So, if there is some critical acclaim, but it is not nearly enough given the immense amount the band rocks, said band could be more "underrated" than some totally unknown band that is moderately good.

If great songs/albums equated to great public acclaim, then Spoon would be one of the biggest bands in the world right now. I am sure that tons of people on this board love them, but so should millions of other people.

That way, when they're big and famous, everyone could come up with clever posts about how much the band sucks.
