Last year's line up sucked but maybe there will be some crossovers from Orion Festival (Metallica NJ fest) according to GB's facebook picture posted today. And they changed the location this year to Randall's Island (bigger capacity than Governor's Island where it took place last year). The line up is coming out on 2/21 (http://governorsballmusicfestival.com/)

Governors Ball - 6/23 & 6/24
Orion Festival - 6/23 & 6/24

One thing cool about this festival from last year was no overlapping sets (same thing for this year too).

Last year's set times:
12:15 - 12:45: Outasight
12:50 - 1:25: Reptar
1:30 - 2:15: Passion Pit (DJ set)
2:20 - 3:05: Das Racist
3:10 - 3:55: Mac Miller
4:00 - 4:50: Miami Horror
4:55 - 5:50: People Under the Stairs
5:55 - 6:50: Neon Indian
6:55 - 7:55: Big Boi
8:00 - 9:00: Empire of the Sun
9:05 - 10:25: Girl Talk
10:30 - ???: Pretty Lights

We are excited to announce the addition of Fiona Apple to Gov Ball 2012! The Grammy award-winning artist will be touring this year behind her first new album since 2005's critically acclaimed Extraordinary Machine. Machine was named by Rolling Stone Magazine as the 49th best album of the 2000s, and was nominated for multiple Grammys. This past Friday, Apple's select six-show club tour (her first live dates since 2007) was met with incredible demand, and sold out in minutes. Apple's addition to the Sunday lineup of Gov Ball will give new fans, as well as her die-hard following, one of the first opportunities to see her perform live in NYC since her sold out show at Central Park in 2006.

Its an honor to have one of the greatest, and most unique, female singer/songwriters in alternative music grace the stage at Gov Ball this year. :lool We can't wait.

I wish what is blacked out was an actual name rather than just the appearance of such.

There are a good number of artists here I'd really like to see. I'd be real interested in seeing the line-up listed day by day. Though if they sell well there may not be day tickets to consider. And they'd likely be $75-$100, plus fees. Hmmm.

mumford and sons makes much more sense than any of the others mentioned. they have 2 huge bowery presents shows coming up in early february, and bowery never allows a band to announce another non-bowery show before the already-scheduled one. this makes even more sense considering the avett brothers and the lumineers are on the lineup.

I'm going to be coming from California, and I've never been to NY before. How do most people get to the festival?

the festival really tries to push the ferry ticket as being a good way to get there. whatever you do, do not buy the ferry ticket. all you have to do is take the subway to 125th st. (4, 5 or 6 train) and then a short 5 minute bus ride to the festival. or you can walk from 125th as well. last year my friend and i left at the exact same time from my apartment downtown. he took the ferry (which is 45 dollars plus fees) and i took the train and bus (7 dollars) and i got there 40 minutes quicker, and for a whole lot less money.

Everything zfireswitch is 100% true, but if this is your first time in NY and have some extra cash to drop on the ferry, it might be a cool experience for you to get to see all the buildings from the water. It does take some time waiting for the ferries to dock and take off, but if you plan on goin in fairly early each day its not so bad. I for one think a boat ride in the morning is a nice way to start the day, but thats just me.

All great guesses. First year was Girl Talk followed by Pretty Lights, Second Year was Kid Cudi(who was the worst person i've ever seen) and Beck. I think its gonna be someone dancy. Not necessarily EDM but someone a bit more up-beat. Just seems like it would fit.

Mumford and Sons have a huge gap between April 11 and July 13 but both of those dates are in Europe. After 2 sold out shows at Barclays this month, I think it would be strange for them to come back to NYC for another show. Postal Service playing NYC a week after the festival seems to suggest they won't be playing either.

With new albums from the Strokes, Vampire Weekend and YYYs coming this spring, June seems a while away for them to be doing their hometown shows... but I can't think of too many others that would be possibilities.

they just sent out an update. miguel canceled, cold war kids added. still no word on single day tickets. they have a pretty funny "volunteer" program (http://govballvols.eventbrite.com/#) up now:
•There is a $20 non-refundable processing fee. You can expect to be accepted to the volunteer program.

•Besides the $20 fee, you will also be required to put down a deposit for the price of a 3-Day GA Ticket ($240) with a valid debit or credit card. The card will be charged $260 at sign up and refunded $240 within 5 days of the end of the festival as long as you complete your work requirements and follow all the volunteer rules. If you fail to complete the work requirements or fail to follow the volunteer rules, you will forfeit your deposit (essentially you will just end up paying for a ticket plus the processing fee).

so governors ball gets paid 20 bucks per person working, and if they dont work enough, they have to pay 260? interesting.

Originally, we had been chatting with Atoms For Peace to be a headliner at Gov Ball this year. It appeared that the June time period worked great for their schedule for touring in the States. A few days before we were scheduled to announce the lineup, we were informed that AFP would not be touring America until the Fall.
We reached out to handful of acts that piqued our interest. Some had already confirmed their Summer Tour plans, and were thus unavailable for Gov Ball. After we compiled a list of acts that were avail for the festival, we narrowed the list down to iconic acts that weren't 'regulars' on the festival scene, and that many of the fans had never experience in the live setting. GNR's catalog is so deep with hits, and their live show is so strong. Contemporary music festival's like Governors Ball are platforms for fans to see their favorite bands live. But it's also a platform for fans to experience music that they normally wouldn't listen to, or see live. Festivals are also about trying new things. That's part of the beauty of the experience. We're confident they will blow people's minds at Gov Ball.

This is exactly why I'm not going to this festival. I rather see bands like Dinosaur Jr, Deerhunter, DFA 1979 and etc at smaller venues!

ps "I would love to head straight to T5 or Roseland" - Yea bro! Two of the finest venues we have in NYC!

This is a standard policy of any festival that has volunteers. It prevents people from signing up as volunteers and then fucking off and just watching sets instead of working.

* Reignwolf
* Polica
* Dinosaur Jr
* Local Natives
* Beach House

* Robert deLong
* Wild Nothing
* Japandroids (who I saw but would love to see again)
* Alt-J
* Cut Copy

* Steel Pulse
* Cold War Kids

With EDC, Electric Zoo, and Camp Bisco, there are dance music alternatives. :)

Besides, I expect a pit at Japandroids. :)

3 day passes and single days tickets are sold out. only 3 day VIP is left. good for them! last year never felt crowded, but it wasn't sold out. let's hope there isn't too much of a difference.

Yeah it's nice that there are fests that replace major artists who drop out...

Well am I sure ever glad I am not going to this. I would have basically nothing to do all day Friday, then nothing but conflicts all day Saturday and Sunday.

Also, major lulz at Cut Copy -> Guns N' Roses.

Awful scheduling. Glad I'm not going to this. Would not surprise me at all if this is completely revamped in a few days similar to how FYF completely changed their scheduling with GVs help.
