I see people mentioning different lots and how some are way better than others.

Which are the best? Do they fill up the best (closest?) ones first? Is getting there when it opens mean a better campground lot than getting there later?

Is there a map of the lots anywhere?

the best spots are fuilled last, to deter everyone from showing up at 7am thursday.

You'll get the most space and less crowds showing up at Friday morning, possible chance of double campsite!

So it's clear to the OP, you don't get to choose which lot you go into. They choose which lots to fill up first etc. The only thing you have control over is what time you get in the camping line with your car, as this is what will affect what lot you go into. No, no one can say definitely that if you get in line at X:XX PM on Thursday you'll get into Lot X. I think I got into the car camping line around 8PM last year (with 26 other cars in my group) and we all got into the dead center of Lot 8, which was argued by many to be the best lot.

Thanks for the info. We are planning on getting there early on Thursday. Any idea which lot they started with last year?

They filled up lot 5 first last year. We got there around noon on thursday and were set up within a few hours. We ended up in the middle of lot 5.

We got into the car camping line around 1pm in 2011, and managed to score a spot Lot 8, right on Main St about halfway down, which was pretty darn lucky! But I really think it's pretty sporadic, those attending Weekend 2 will have a better idea from Weekend 1 campers.

It looks like they fill up Lot 5 and then 8 and if I remember correctly they started filling up Lot 10 at the end of Thursday Night. With that said there's really no way to be sure how the camping layout is going to look because we really don't know if it's going to be similar at all.

How was lot 5?

Lot 5 was great except that they closed down the store there on Friday night and then we had to walk a ways to get ice and they did not have the showers open all the hours they said they were. It was close to the entrance of the fest though and lots of great people. We were there waiting in line when they opened camping last year and in 2010. In 2010 they filled lot 12 first and we liked lot 12 better but it was not even used for camping last year. Get there earlier and you get a spot closer to the festival entrance.

If you don't mind the extra walk to get to the store and everything in lot 8, lot 5 is awesome. It was kinda secluded from everything which gave it a more community-like feel. We loved it.

Oh ok Thanks. I heard good things about lot 12. I ended in lot 10b that yeah and last year in lot 10a(jackrabbit st). Lot 12 was located just below the festival grounds I think.

Bizzarely enough, the 2012 layout map has been posted:

Oh good for tent camping, they aren't in the smelly boonies like last year.

Looks like Car Camping has been expanded! and Tent Camping is much closer to the festival entrance.

So it looks like Lot 5 has expanded and Lot 7 added for car camping... Man, Lot 7 would suck. Definitely going to plan on being there early to get 5 or 8

That would be awesome...

Also, is that stripey line down Madison supposed to represent the route to get into car camping?

Also, I was looking at Google Maps satellite view and I believe Lot 5 will be the same as last year (nowhere for it to expand to) and the tent area looks like just dirt. I bet they release a more detailed map closer to the festival

Lot 5 is the exact same size, however lot 8 looks smaller? If that's possible...

I think it's smaller too and it looks like they took some of that room for the actual festival grounds when you compare it to last year's map. Could be the area that they're going to put The Cantina since last year there didn't really seem to be anywhere right when you got into the fest that could house something like that

We got there as the sun start to set last year, and we were put an aisle before the roller rink in lot 8 (Leopard St). In my opinion, it was an amazing spot: you're a skip away from the bathroom, food was right down our street, and the roller rink was even closer. It was about ten minutes to get into the festival, but that was probably my only gripe. Beats being in lot ten.

we got there at 1pm thursday and were really close to the entrance right off of Main in lot B. trying for the same time this year

Man, I want to get there early to avoid the line in as much as possible and get setup so we can start partying, but Lot 8 really seems like the place to be and it sounds like you have to wait a bit to get that one. Since it opens early this year maybe we can try to get there around noon and get lot 8.

2007 & 2009 I was in what is now Lot 8. Very nice centralized spot. 2010 lot 10B & 2011 lot 10A (3 rows south of Gen store, which was awesome) both times arriving around midnight Thursday night. For your camping experience, the only ones who really got shafted the past few years were the Tent Campers who were down wind of all the car exhaust at the car search area. Looks like they fixed that this year. Lot 8 still looks like the money shot...c'mon lot 8!!!

Consequently, the Lot 7 Factor is now going to add a wrinkle into Thursday logistics. I'd rather be in lot 10 (the corner just below lot 8) than have to hike out to Lot 7 all weekend....

Hopefully we will have more of an idea after weekend 1 goes. Maybe some people will give us feed back on how it went down. 1 up side to going weekend 2.

I think it is fairly safe to assume that Lot 5 then 8 again this year, just because it seems way easier to fill it up that way considering how you enter in. I will definitely be checking the board and twitter Thursday morning to see where people are being put, though.

Heh.. I know, its a bit ridiculous. I have a bit of an excuse though, since we have three sets of people coming from three different areas and one group needing to get plane tickets. We need to pick a time to meet in Indio sooner than later. I think if we get there as early as we can, though, it will all be good. Fun no matter what the lot!
