Noisia
An electronic music group of 3, Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen and Thijs de Vlieger, from the Netherlands who got their name from the word VISION inverted on a VHS tape. Influenced by a range of artists, from The Prodigy to James Brown, Miles Davis to Konflict, Tipper to Fatboy Slim, they produce a wide variety of music including drum & bass, dubstep, house, and breaks. Releasing their first record in 2003 on SLR and releasing on every major drum & bass label in the following years, 2005 saw Noisia establish their own label, Vision Recordings to put out their drum & bass productions and collaborations and retain creative control of their music. Over the past few years, accolades for Noisia have included Best Tech DJ in the UK National D&B Awards in 2009 and 2010, Best Producers at the 2010 D&B Arena Awards and Best Drum & Bass Artist on Beatport in both 2009 and 2010.

EMA is a Erika M. Anderson, a North Dakota native who came to LA and used to be in the band Gowns with her boyfriend Ezra Buchla. They made dark noise folk albums that were full of intensity and tension, and that translated live. They were intense people and they eventually ended their relationship. Erika went back to North Dakota and recorded her debut album, Past Life, Martyred Saints, in the aftermath. Her first collection, the songs are grim and determined descriptions of a failing romance. Particularly moving to me is Coda into Marked. In Coda, Buchla and Anderson both sing a line that is reused at the end of Marked, and the way she owns the line at the end is really something. Live she retains the incredible intensity that she showed in Gowns. When I saw her, she played two Gowns tunes, and she's been known to throw out some great covers live. She is not to be missed if you like dark and intense rock music. Highly recommended.

Greg Ginn is the founding member of:
Panic, Black Flag, Gone, Hor, Fastgato, October Faction, Killer Tweeker Bees, Confront James, EL BAD, Mojack, Greg Ginn and the Tyler Texas Corrugators, Jambang and Greg Ginn and the Royal We. He pretty much invented hardcore punk guitar, has shit tons of jazz/jam/metal recordings, and was the founder of SST records, who released seminal albums from Black Flag, The Minutemen, The Meat Puppets, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden and pretty much every good band ever. He wrote some of the best punk songs of all time (he was the primary songwriter and lyricist for Black Flag) and was a model for perseverence in the indie scene. I have no idea what to expect from his set (he's not listed as any of his alter egos currently, but his latest release is his guitar take on minimal house stuff and it's really good) but he's a true legend and you should not miss him.
Edit: Greg is playing as Greg Ginn and the Royal We. This is his newest project where he is the whole band. The album and single are both instrumental guitar recordings where Greg mimics some of the song structures and tropes of electronic music. It's pretty cool stuff, more expansive than Black Flag, but with his trademark intensity. I'm not sure if he'll be performing solo, but it should be cool to see him do some of this wild playing live.

I'll post Beirut soon (unless someone beats me to it).

Andrew Bird
Andrew Bird is a Chicago born violinist, who began his training at the age of 4. Bird received his bachelor's in violin performance from Northwestern in 1996, and his early professional work, both in collaborations with the Squirrel Nut Zippers and his own band, Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, was very much part of the swing revival. By 2001's "The Swimming Hour", however, the Bowl of Fire had moved almost entirely beyond swing, and Bird's first solo album under simply his own name, "Weather Systems" (2003) was along the lines of indie folk. At present, he has three more albums under his own name ("Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs", "Armchair Apocrypha", and "Noble Beast"). Bird is now known for his rich, layered compositions and poetic, esoteric lyrics; live he samples and loops his own performance, often, for instance, laying down a loop of pizzacato violin, then bowing, then playing guitar. He is also known for his characteristic whistling. When he is joined by a full band, members include Martin Dosh on drums and looping duties and Jeremy Ylvisaker and Mike Lewis on bass.

At The Drive-In is a "Post Hardcore" band from El Paso, Texas. They realeased 3 LP's between 1996-2000, the most well known being 2000's Relationship of Command. They broke up in 2001, the members splitting up to form 2 bands: The Mars Volta and Sparta. They are known for their enigmatic lyrics, exceptional guitar rhythms, and high-energy live shows.

http://www.somekindofawesome.com/storage/post-images/swedish-house-mafia3.jpeg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=13067612085 06
This is Swedish House Mafia.
They are three Swedish dudes. They play a bunch of songs that go “Boom boom boom boom” and then the bass drops out and there’s a part people sing along to and then the bass comes back in going “boom boom boom.” Sometimes there are angel sounds.
It is important to note that the three members of Swedish House Mafia do not function as individuals separate and independent from the Swedish House Mafia itself. Simply stated, the three members of Swedish House Mafia will individually only play tracks that the Swedish House Mafia as a collective plays.
Last year, two of the three members of the Swedish Mafia, who play the exact same songs individually as the Swedish House Mafia plays as a group, headlined the Sahara two of the three nights of Coachella.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZLZ1Zoci9AA/SKrgfpoTNmI/AAAAAAAAAU4/rnkql0QPE68/s400/afrojack.jpg
This is Afrojack.
He’s Dutch. His songs go “Boom boom boom boom,” but they also have very fast high-pitched sounds that go “woop woop woop woop woop dee doop!” Sometimes Pitbull raps on his songs. He gets hip hop artists to sing on his songs, but David Guetta had hip hop artists sing on his songs first.
It is at times difficult to tell if you are listening to an Afrojack song or an LMFAO song.
http://www.windishagency.com/assets/409/amon_press.jpg
This is Amon Tobin.
He plays weird sounds and shows you weird pictures of things. He is different than other Sahara acts that play weird sounds and show you weird pictures of things, because liking the latter acts makes you a “light show monkey” but liking Amon Tobin makes you a “genius.” People typically stand around and look at the pictures.
http://planetill.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/sebastian.jpg
This is SebastiAn.
He’s French. He’ll smoke cigarettes and twist some knobs on a little panel. Sometimes the music sounds like video game music. Other times it sounds like the Spawn soundtrack. His tracks are “bangin.” He will probably play a DJ Mehdi song. It will be a “moment.”
Sometimes people think he is Kavinsky. He is not.
http://thissongissick.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Feed-Me-DJ-.jpg
This is Feed Me.
He does what SebastiAn does except he gets to do it because he’s friends with Deadmau5. Otherwise, nobody would give a shit. He will also play dubstep. Everyone will be happy and go “fucking duuuuuuuubsteeeeeeep!”
See also Madeon.
http://thissongissick.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DavidGuettasongPics1Hh8Nj1HdEvRRuM.jpg
This is David Guetta.
Hip hop artists think that he needs to produce their songs now. He makes songs that go “Boom boom boom boom” and then the bass drops out and everyone sings along and Usher sings over it and he holds his hands up in the air and then the bass comes back in. He has street cred because he worked with Akon. Afrojack does what he does.
http://soundofmyshoesdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dj-kaskade.jpg
This is Kaskade.
He does what David Guetta and Afrojack do except he doesn’t have as many friends in the music industry. He’s Mormon.
http://static.djguide.nl/image/djfotos/sebastianingrosso.jpg
This is Sebastian Ingrosso.
He is in Swedish House Mafia. He will do what Swedish House Mafia does, including playing the exact same songs. When he plays the Sahara, four of the previous five nights of Coachella will have featured at least one individual member of the Swedish House Mafia or the Swedish House Mafia itself. The individual members of the Swedish House Mafia play the same songs as the Swedish House Mafia.
He is not SebastiAn.
http://www.jadorehousemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Martin-Solveig.jpg
This is Martin Solveig.
He does what David Guetta and Afrojack and Kaskade and Sebastian Ingrosso, except he only works with white singers. He plays tennis.
http://cdn.synthtopia.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/justice-unplugged.jpg
This is Justice.
They are French and will smoke like SebastiAn and play music like SebastiAn, except there are two of them, so people think they are geniuses. They have a cross that lights up. People see it and are like “Fucking sick!” Then they’re all “Fucking Just-ees!” because they think that’s how French people say “Justice.”
http://stereogumbo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/GirlTalk1.jpg
This is Girl Talk.
He is like listening to your teenage sister’s iPod except if your sister was even more of a weakling than she is now.
http://www.electronicaoasis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/avicii.jpg
This is Avicii.
He is a Swedish DJ that plays songs that go “Boom boom boom boom” and then the bass drops out and then people sing along and then the bass comes back in, except he is not a member of Swedish House Mafia.
http://www.novafm.com.au/lib/images/artist/normal/calvin-harris-8498.jpg
This is Calvin Harris.
He is kind of like David Guetta in that he makes music with Rihanna. He probably won’t play that Rihanna song though. He made an album that sounded like it was made in the 1980s except it was “nu.” Then he made another album and it just sounded like Kaskade, David Guetta, Avicii, Sebastian Ingrosso, Afrojack, and Swedish House Mafia. He’ll probably play the songs that sound like Kaskade, David Guetta, Avicii, Sebastian Ingrosso, Afrojack, and Swedish House Mafia.
http://thruthevine.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/EZ2011_porter_robinson_SRK_Saturday-2076.jpg
This is Porter Robinson.
His songs go “Boom boom boom boom” and then make weird vortex sounds. He sounds like Wolfgang Gartner if Wolfgang Gartner was Wolfgang Gartner.
As you can see, it’s gonna be a groundbreaking year. See you in the tent!

Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 (playing Sunday):
These guys are this year's token group-from-Africa band. Like all other previous group-from-Africa bands, they sound like they will be entertaining and lively. Seun leads the band and sings and plays saxophone. It's a afrobeat kind of thing. If history repeats itself, they will be on the Gobi during the hottest part of the day.

Egypt 80 is one of the classic bands fronted by Fela Kuti as he invented afrobeat. Seun is Fela's son, and I imagine that the set is going to be a monster of funk.
Grouplove
An American indie (but they aren't indie because they are signed to Atlantic) rock band that formed in 2009 by Hannah Hooper, Christian Zucconi, Sean Gadd , Andrew Wessen and Ryan Rabin. Grouplove began when Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi forged a friendship with the other three members while attending an artists' residency on the island of Crete.
Grouplove made that song from the new iPod commercial. It is called Tongue Tied.

Kasabian are an English rock band formed in Leicestershire in 1997. Each of the first 3 studio albums went double platinum in the U.K. The fourth album Velociraptor! was released in 2011. Having a reputation of one of the best live bands, Kasabian was named band of 2010 by the Brit Awards. It is Kasabian's unique space rock mood that sets them apart from many other bands.
Charles Manson inspired the name Kasabian after one of the members was reading about him in a magazine. Kasab means butcher in Arab

COMPANY FLOW
Company Flow is a hip-hop group from Brooklyn that formed in the mid-90's consisting of El-P, Mr. Len and Bigg Jus. They have one full length album called Funcrusher Plus that is one of the most unique, original etc. etc. sounding rap albums of it's time. I would describe it as traditional 90's boom-bap but with a very abstract, funky, spacey, experimental feel to both the production and lyricism that really sets it apart. Much of the rapping is dark and the imagery is often very dense but the delivery still retains a sort of evil sense of humor to it that manages to bring the material to life, especially upon repeated listens. They first reunited for a show in Brooklyn in 2007 and more recently they supported Portishead at the ATP I'll Be Your Mirror event.

First Aid Kit are a pair of Swedish sisters that specialise in some occasionally country tinged folk music. They will be ruined by a mixture of the do lab and douches talking. They are signed to Rabid records which is run by The Knife, but yet sound nothing like The Knife (but they did cover Fever Ray - see vid 2). Crazy Swedes.

PULP
http://www.britpop.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/pulp.jpg
After releasing a few Pablo Honeys, Pulp reigned over Britpop with three magical albums: 1994's His 'n' Hers, 1995's Different Class, and 1998's This is Hardcore. They also made a final album, We Love Life, that's not bad at all. Pulp's frontman, Jarvis Cocker, writes excellent lyrics about sleeping with girl's sisters, making amateur pornography, and having sex with older people. Their most popular song is called "Common People," which tells the tale of a wealthy woman trying to remove herself from her financial status by sleeping with Jarvis, going to the shopping market, among other things... These humorous and honest lyrics are what make Pulp such an amazing act, alongside their finely-crafted, keyboardy, and catchy sound. This Coachella performance is their first announced date in America after playing successful reunion shows in Europe and Australia last year.

Laura Marling
Laura Marling is a 21-year old (22 in February) singer-songwriter/folk musician from Hampshire, England. “Sing-songwriter” and “folk” might sound boring, but she has a progression in many of her songs that can be interesting and pretty passionate. She has 3 albums: “Alas, I Cannot Swim,” “I Speak Because I Can,” and “A Creature I Don’t Know.” They have all received positive critical praise. I saw her once at a festival, two years ago, and she was very enjoyable. It’s possible she’s even better now with a little more seasoning. If you’re into chicks with guitars who sing, she is one of the good ones (IMO, of course).

Jeff Mangum
Jeff Mangum is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and cofounder of the Athens, GA Elephant 6 Collective. Although Mangum participated in numerous Elephant 6 projects (ie: Olivia Tremor Control), he is best known for his involvement with legendary indie rock group Neutral Milk Hotel, in which he served as the frontman and primary songwriter. The group's 1998 album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, garnered a smattering of praise after its initial release, but would later gain a devoted cult following and be regarded as one of the landmark albums of the American indie movement.
Mangum disbanded NMH shortly after the release of Aeroplane and disappeared from the public eye without explanation; occasionally, Mangum made appearances on other Elephant 6 recordings, but he refrained from performing and recording new material. In 2008, Mangum began making unannounced, brief appearances at Elephant 6 concerts where he would usually perform one or two songs. In 2009, he performed a handful of NMH material at a benefit concert and performed a similar set in Brooklyn in late 2010. Since then, he has performed intermittently at shows across the East Coast, including ATP NJ. This makes Mangum's appearance at Coachella a very rare and unique occurrence; it will be his first performance in the Southern California region in nearly 14 years.
Mangum's songs are highly literate, complex compositions wrought with imagery and palpable emotion. While diverse instruments such as the harmonium and trumpet appear on NMH recordings, Mangum's recent solo performances feature only him and a collection of guitars. I often liken Mangum to a modern-day troubadour — one who constructs bizarre, captivating stories able to hold the attention of anyone who happens to listen to his music. His voice, often imperfect and tinged with an accent you can't really put your finger on, has the ability to silence a room and make people sob uncontrollably. The man is pure magic.

Refused were a good hardcore band out of Sweden in the mid-90s. They sang about anarchy and how much they hated capitalism and they were straight edge and all that fun stuff. Then something must have happened to them, because they went from being a good hardcore band to something completely else. They put out an album called The Shape of Punk to Come, and it damn near lived up to that title. They toyed with song structure, added electronic, jazz and post-rock elements to the mix, increased their lyrical sophistication and basically pushed everything to the edge. The result is a monster of an album. During the subsequent tour they collapsed and broke up. This is the first time they've played since. Get excited.

I don't know anything about fIREHOSE. That would be helpful. I will try and do a Madness write up tomorrow.
They have a (probably somewhat apocryphal) union story that's probably weirder than any of the other acts on the lineup. After D. Boon died (from a bizarre accident where he was sleeping in their van and fell out the back door), Minutemen broke up. Camper Van Beethoven lied to some guy in Ohio that Minutemen were looking to replace D Boon, and the kid drove to San Pedro and begged Mike Watt and George Hurley to let him play for them. He played a cover of The Who and some Minutemen songs and they decided to go for and became fIREHOSE.

That is definitely better than my review of Laura Marling to a friend: She's like Jewel but doesn't suck.

Metronomy is an electronic/pop band who's members are from various parts of England. They have released 3 full length albums. The most recent one, "The English Riviera", has received the most success and was featured on many British and American publication's Top Albums of 2011 list. Metronomy started as a sort-of solo project by Joseph Mount. The first album is almost entirely instrumental. It features a lot of melodica, which is not often found in the electronic genre. The second album is much more accessible for newer fans. It is my personal favorite, and I have been a fan for many years. The live band used to consist of Joseph, Oscar Cash, and Gabriel Stebbing. The drums and many sounds were prerecorded and controlled by Joseph. Since Gabriel left the band in 2009, Metronomy have gone completely live with a drummer and new bass player. When they perform live, each member has a circular light attached to their chest that flashes on and off according to the beat. It is really quite fun seeing them live. They are an extremely talented band, and they are not to be missed. If you like live electronic music with some funk bass attached, Metronomy is a must see for you this Coachella.

THE HORRORS
http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/The_Horrors1.jpg
The Horrors are a Southend on Sea band that first sounded a bit like Bauhaus, until a 2009 shoegaze awakening that gave birth to their second debut album, Primary Colours, which was produced by board-favorite Geoff Barrow (of Portishead), who kinda' used "The Rip" to make The Horrors' song "Sea Within a Sea," so it seems... Last year, they released Skying, which still sounds like My Bloody Valentine at times, but also kinda sounds like Echo & the Bunnymen too. And while you can compare The Horrors to this band and that band, file them under this genre and that genre, their changes don't take away from the music, which is made from the very best of all their inspirations.

Kendrick Lamar
http://soundlogik.com/wp-content/uploads/10-07-11_orisue_kendrick_lamar_experience_01.jpg
Meet Kendrick Lamar, formerly known as K.Dot, who very well may be the new face of the west. Lamar, a Compton native, embodies the west coast gangster rap style that has been on hiatus since Game's last legitimate release. Kendrick's flow weaves seamlessly in and out of beats commanding the listener's attention. I've featured a few tracks off of his Section.80 "mixtape", which is better than most rap ALBUMS in the recent past. Fun fact "In August 2011, while onstage with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Game, the three of them crowned him [Lamar] the "New Prince of the West Coast". He will most likely be playing earlier in the day, hopefully without any major conflicts. If you like what you hear I'd highly suggest copping Section.80 (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CDIQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fs ection.80%2Fid447516359&ei=6asQT5OZGovZiQK1l-m2DQ&usg=AFQjCNEzpvcNxpu5jIx6vOQZ0arjxnewLw&sig2=AiyzmxE8WMbzXLSF0T0b_w) .

The Shins
The Shins are basically singer/songwriter James Mercer and a backing band since the firing of the rest of the line-up in 2009. However, it's all good, since Mercer creates some great, poppy music, and is the force behind the whole thing (not to take away from the work of the original members). While The Shins are often shrugged off as a "My First Indie Band" type, there is good reason to their mass appeal (outside of the reference in Garden State that shot them into much larger fanbase); always catchy, with wordplay heavy and clever lyrics, and a wide variety of interesting melodies and compositions, their music is consistently good. Their music ranges from a lot of the minimalist, soft pop rock of their debut, Oh, Inverted World, to their much more powerpop later stuff on their last album, Wincing the Night Away (similar to what their newer stuff sounds like; I heard them tour a lot of the stuff on their yet-to-be-released new album back in '09). They deliver live, and haven't toured in 3 years, so this should be a treat.

Beirut is a 6-piece Balkan folk/world music band from Santa Fe, New Mexico (I thought they were from France or Italy when I first heard the band). Originally an individual project, 25 year old front man Zach Condon formed the band after he abruptly left college to travel throughout Europe. Condon notes that jazz had a heavy influence on him growing up, along with Goran Bregović, Boban Marković, and other European folk acts.
I saw Beirut recently in Portland and they were fantastic. The trumpets have more of a presence live than on record, and they often change/rework their songs which is rather refreshing.

How excited should i be for fIREHOSE? I've never heard of them. This is excited:
fIREHOSE IS PLAYING GUYS
Who is fIRHOSE?
They're 2/3 of The Minutemen.
How did they form?
They have a (probably somewhat apocryphal) union story that's probably weirder than any of the other acts on the lineup. After D. Boon died (from a bizarre accident where he was sleeping in their van and fell out the back door), Minutemen broke up. Camper Van Beethoven lied to some guy in Ohio that Minutemen were looking to replace D Boon, and the kid drove to San Pedro and begged Mike Watt and George Hurley to let him play for them. He played a cover of The Who and some Minutemen songs and they decided to go for and became fIREHOSE.
With the death of D. Boon, and in turn the end of The Minutemen behind them, they joined forces with avid Minutemen fan Ed Crawford to be their new singer/guitar player. Their new singer brought a more traditional song writing style then the Minutemen had ever used, but now with a stronger heartfelt and daring base for their music, the band began to grow. Mike Watt begins to explore more funk based bass riffs under the often folk-centric guitar playing of Crawford, all backed by the frantic yet rhythmic drumming of George Hurley.
From album to album fIREHOSE sway from sounds of punk, funk, folk, pop, and a heavier alternative rock.
Which album is for me?
Ragin', Full On - The beginnings of a band trying to find its own sound. Many of the tracks here stick with the hard-edged Minutemen formula, but introduce a true singers voice from Crawford into the mix. Some great songs here, but not exactly representative of the band as a whole.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWArl_p7_AY
If'n - Here lies the first true fIRHOSE album, with most of its music based on Mike Watt's writing and the band growing on top of him. Their have a good time funk-rock sound shines through here with a mix of mellow and heavy songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIegYoQjGaE
fROMOHIO - My personal favorite album. Many of the songs implore a more traditional pop/folk loud/quiet/loud verse/chorus/verse, but Watt keeps the weird coming with his pulsating funk riffs as well as his aggressive vocals in strong contrast to Crawford's melodic nature.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubNYvtaoH8U
Flyin' the Flannel - When the band switched to a major label they dropped much of their style on the last two records and went for a much heavier "alternative rock" style. That should not lead you to believe their whimsical melodies disappear here, just expect some more crunchy guitar and thumping rhythm section. More aggressive vocals from Crawford as well, blending together with Watt's much more.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE5V-nCNswE
Mr. Machinery Operator - The second major label album, and the bands last record, seeing J. Mascis stepping into the producer's role and delivers a surprisingly melodic and at times lounge worthy album with lots of wah textures and fuzzbox use.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhiGty7MPUo

Black Lips are a self described “Flower Punk” band from Atlanta, Georgia. Their live shows often seem to overshadow their actual music (which most would describe as lo-fi, garage rock, punk, etc.). They’re a group that’s known for their provocative stage antics, but have since taken a step back from such activity. Black Lips attribute their early behavior to their inability to play instruments. Some of you might have seen the Black Lips/King Khan super group at Coachella 2010.
This is one of my most anticipated sets -- and if you enjoy acts like Ty Segall, King Khan, the Strange Boys, and other garage/punk acts then you will probably enjoy Black Lips.

The Vaccines
The Vaccines are a British guitar rock band with a sound heavily influenced by 60's garage/70's punk (a la The Ramones), but realistically The Strokes. They got a lot of hype from NME last year for being an up-and-coming "IT" band. Many people will argue whether they are worthy of such acclaim. Regardless of such arguments, they should put on a fun, energetic show. They are playing Saturday, should be earlier in the day, so hopefully won't conflict with the plethora of goodness and can't-misses on the day. They have one album, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?, which came out last year, so if you like 'em you don't need to do a lot of listening to get their catalog.

Real Estate is an indie "beach-rock" band from New Jersey. It's members include Martin Courtney (of Titus Andronicus), Matthew Mondanile (of Ducktails), Etienne Duguay, and Alex Bleeker. Alex wears a hat and has a goofy smile and I think we all want to have a beer with Alex. Anyway, their self titled debut album was released by the Woodsist label in 2009 and a cornerstone of their sound is a lo-fi aesthetic paired with looping, melodies that speak to a suburban existence. Critics use terms like "underwater pop" and often link oceanic or beach-comber images to the sound that this band crafts. Real Estate released an EP in 2010 titled Reality, but this is more of a somber, slow affair of songs that are mainly the introspective musings of Martin Courtney. In 2011 they released their second LP, Days, to even more critical acclaim. There is noticeably less "drift" on these songs, which are more tightly composed and technically executed. This is not to say that the lazy and hazy sonic qualities are absent, though. Real Estate are masters of presenting lingering melodies and subtle jam sessions that make you overlook how much effort they actually put into it. They will be one of the best afternoon sets on Sunday. I have seen them live twice and they definitely deliver.

Fanfarlo
Generally described as “indie folk” or “indie pop,” Fanfarlo is a band from London that formed in 2006. These gents (and lady) incorporate various types of instruments into their music, including; violins, clarinets, mandolins, and trumpets to go along with some of the standard bass, guitar, and drums. It’s because of this that they sometimes get lumped in with Arcade Fire. They released their first album, Reservoir, in 2009. It ended up being one of my favorite albums of the year. They’re set to release their 2nd album, Rooms Filled With Light, on February 28th. They released a single a few months ago called “Replicate,” which I’m not sure how I feel about. The song feels incomplete. I still have optimism about the record, though, based on how much I liked the first one. Here are some songs, including the aforementioned new single. “I’m a Pilot” is my favorite of the three.
Note: The only reason Fanfarlo is on the lineup is because Goldenvoice posted a video of theirs on the web site before last year's lineup release, and they had to deal with an entire year of Negative Backlash because Fanfarlo didn't end up on the 2011 lineup.

The Sheepdogs
This four piece Canadian rock band hails from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan made up of Ewan Currie on guitar and vocals, Leot Hanson on guitar, Ryan Gullen on Bass and Sam Corbett plays the drums. The band struggled to make it but hit the big time after appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, the first unsigned band to ever accomplish this after righteously winning Rolling Stones “Choose the Cover” competition. Last year saw them win 3 Casby awards, Favorite New Artist, Favorite Indie Album and Favorite New Album as well as Rock Album of the Year at the 2011 Western Canadian Music Awards. Any “Project Runway” fans will recognize them from this year’s program as the band the designers needed to create a look for:-) Big guitars, stacked harmonies, vintage organ and piano and what their webpage calls “an old-school rock and roll revival” makes this one of my favorite bands on the lineup this year and to see them live is truly absolute rock and roll jubilation!

How excited should i be for fIREHOSE? I've never heard of them. This is excited:
Who is fIRHOSE?
How did they form?

The Coachella sets of theirs on Saturday the 14th and 21st will be some of their first shows together after 18 years apart. On a day sure to be filled with glorious once in a lifetime performances and other reunion acts, the unique styling of fIREHOSE are not to be missed.
Oh. My. God. Why have I never listened to fIREHOSE before? This is insane. They have instantly shot up to my must see acts on Saturday. I just... wow.

Because they are constantly overshadowed by The Minutemen legacy and other Mike Watt affairs... Despite them being the best project he is/was involved with. If you like any of that you will probably like all of their stuff. Their records have huge ups and downs in intensity and feel. if'n and fROMOHIO is where I believe someone should start, but you really can't go wrong. MORE fIREHOSE LOVE.
I really hope they play their own gig in LA/Pomona after either of the weekends.

Yuck is a band that named themselves Yuck and they are from London, England. Daniel Blumberg and Max Bloom are two longtime friends and are the guitarists, vocalists, and songwriters, with Mariko Doi on the bass and Jonny Rogoff on the drums. You might think that Jonny Rogoff is Passive Theory, but he's not! That's afro-ist. Daniel's younger sister Ilana provided some of the back up vocals on their debut album, which they also titled Yuck. Remember the 90's? Anyone who is well versed in the fuzzy shoe-gaze indie rock music that was prevalent in the 90's will remember this period of music when they listen to Yuck, apparently. They use guitar pedals and their sound has elements of "noise-pop," which is a bit of a dubious term in its own right. There is definitely noise distortion in some of their songs, power riffs, and swirling melodies. They do a nice slow ballad too! They were hyped up on the blogs and all of that, and then their album came out and everyone was pretty happy because it's a good album, despite how ugly the album art is.

Destructo is the DJ moniker of Gary Richards. Gary Richards HATES RAVERS, yet simultaneously produces raves that are called "HARD EVENTS" as often as he can in the greater LA area. Just kidding, they aren't raves, Gary! They are electronic music events, heavy on the ELECTROHOUSE and he often spins at these events himself as Destructo. He will play early in the afternoon in the Sahara and will get the crowd HYPED UP AND FUCKING READY FOR THIS THING. He will probably play DJ Mehdi's "Pocket Piano" in memory of DJ Mehdi's unfortunate and sad death in 2011. He probably won't yell "YOU IN THE FUZZY BOOTS WITH THE GLOWSTICKS, BACK THE FUCK UP, YOU'RE RUINING THIS FOR EVERYONE!" like he did that one time when he threw a rave-I-mean-HARDEVENT at the LA Colliseum and the riot police came. I don't know. It would be cool if he sampled some of the sounds from that night and threw it into his mix. He'll play a bunch of electro-house bangers, including his own track, "Technology." People will pump their fists.

I was lucky enough to see them several times in the early 90's, a few times opening up for other bands, and this was generally the reaction from people standing around me. They had never heard of them before but once seeing them and hearing them they were blown away and converted. One of my all time favorite bands, and Watt is my favorite musician of all time and a real cool guy. Like cutterbutter said I believe Watt's work with fIREHOSE was by far his best stuff, and they are much better live than on record. This is by far my must see act for the weekend. So glad to see them on the poster!

Thundercat
http://www.wheelscene.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/thundercat-interview-two.jpg
Thundercat is the stage name for Stephen Bruner, a supremely gifted bass player who released The Golden Age of Apocalypse this past year on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. While this album is the first under his own name, Thundercat has been a session musician for, and a member of, a number of bands and artists over the past decade, including Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, Erykah Badu, Bilal, and Shafiq Husayn/Sa-Ra. One of his most noteworthy collaborations was with Flying Lotus on the track "MmmHmm" from the 2010 album Cosmogramma, in which Bruner's playfully dexterous style and soulful singing voice can be heard in full effect. In fact, it's not hard to see this track as the seed from which The Golden Age of Apocalypse grew out of, as the album is a continuation and expansion of the modern take on the 1970s jazz fusion style the track explored. Since the album's release in August, Thundercat has put together a string of impressive live performances with a full backing band of equally talented musicians who are able to help push his songs forward into new and interesting directions. A true eccentric (in the best sense of the word), I get the feeling his Coachella sets will really help to increase his already growing reputation. Not to be missed.

Fitz and the Tantrums
Fitz and the Tantrums are an American soul/indie pop band from L.A. They were founded by lead singer Michael Fitzpatrick in 2008 and also include Noelle Scaggs (vocals, percussion), James King (saxophone, flute, trumpet, harmonica), Joseph Karnes (bass guitar), Jeremy Rezumna (keyboards), and John Wicks (drums, percussion). Their debut studio album Pickin' Up the Pieces was released in August 2010 to critical acclaim being called "soulful", "nostalgic", and "infectious". The band is noted for their engaging and energetic live perfomances:

Ugh, I've never been huge on D. Boon's vocals (not that they were his strong point) so I have a hard time being subjective like that. I'll agree with What Makes a Man Start Fires? but Double Nickels is an effort to take in sometimes. It gets WAY too sporadic at times, but I guess thats the love it gets. The great moments go by way too quickly and some of those "poetic" moments are misses and only saved by the instrumentations from the group.
Not to detract from your opinion at all, but it always seems Minutemen are talked up far too much and fIREHOSE far too little. Ive listened to all of the work from both bands at mostly the same time seeing as I wasn't even alive for any of the releases (maybe the last firehose record without looking the date up), but the timing and reverence for Minutemen is lost on me a touch.
O well, I don't know where I was going with this.
tl;dr No Bryan, fIREHOSE > Minutemen IMO

I definitely prefer Double Nickels on the Dime to anything else he's done. It's also one of my desert island records, but the sprawl is what really gets me. There's about 42 great songs on there, so it's pretty easy to not hit a dud.

Where's your Miike Snow write-up?
Ok, since you asked... this is my first attempt, but if it goes well, I'll be glad to try another one.
Miike Snow
Ok, so the first thing to note is that Miike Snow is a band, not a person. While they have additional musicians when they perform live, officially, the band consists of three members: Swedish duo Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg, plus American singer Andrew Wyatt. Prior to forming this band in 2007, Karlsson and Winnberg had success producing pop records, and they carry these skills into Miike Snow's music. Wyatt brings some darker lyrics into otherwise synth-laden indie pop, singing about addiction, isolation, and mortality. Although "Animal" got the most airplay, my favorite track from their S/T CD is "Silvia." They have a new CD dropping this spring, entitled "Happy To You."
In 2010, they were probably my best surprises, so I welcome their return in 2012. Their live performances are solid, often beginning shows wearing identical "Phantom Of The Opera" (or is that "Halloween"???) masks. Here are a few video clips... I was going to stick with three, but decided to add a fourth that has some cool snowstorm footage from my old city of Pittsburgh. Enjoy!

Because they are constantly overshadowed by The Minutemen legacy
I agree with this. But what's ironic is that at the time, you know, late 80s, fIREHOSE seemed a lot more popular than the Minutemen ever were. I mean I just saw their name a lot more than I ever did the Minutemen.

Squeeze:
Formed in London in the mid 70's, Squeeze can be classified somewhere in the pub rock/new wave/power pop overlap that includes Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, the Pretenders and Graham Parker. The band's songwriting dynamic duo, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, have been the mainstays in countless different incarnations of Squeeze and were once dubbed "the new Lennon and McCartney." For all intents and purposes, Difford & Tilbrook= Squeeze. The Beatles influence is undeniable in their hook-heavy, carefully crafted, cleverly worded pop songs. And you might want to dust off that UK English/American English Dictionary if you find yourself singing along and have no idea what you're singing.
The band has broken up and reformed a few times and has included the likes of Jools Holland, Paul Carrack, Steve Nieve, Pete Thomas and Andy Metcalfe. The current touring lineup includes Difford, Tilbrook, John Bentley on bass, Simon Hanson on drums and Stephen Large on keyboards.
Their most critically acclaimed LP is the Elvis Costello-produced East Side Story which includes their biggest U.S. single, "Tempted," sung by Paul Carrack who was only with the band a short time during two different stints. According to their own website bio, "As befits one of the UK’s much-loved acts, there is no end of Squeeze fans currently wearing their influences firmly on their sleeve, whether it be Mark Ronson, Kasabian, Supergrass, Lily Allen, The Feeling or Razorlight." On this side of the pond, you can hear the Squeeze influence in the now defunct (but brilliant) Jellyfish and also in the Shins and Ben Folds Five.
Yes, of course they look like paunchy old men now but they still bring the melody and it should be a glorious sing-a-long on Saturday. The Shins do a decent cover of Goodbye Girl and this sets up nicely for a surprise guest appearance on one stage or another.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
I don't claim to be an expert on them or anybody else, but for anybody who has no clue who they are and/or no idea where to start with them, here's a little info that hopefully will be helpful. They're considered "post-rock"...so yeah, go ahead and group them in with Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, This Will Destroy You, Tortoise, Do Make Say Think, and all those other bands with 27 words in their names if you must...but unlike many of those bands, GY!BE's music is structured more along the lines of how classical music works, meaning the songs are very long and construed of many different pieces and sections within them (their songs usually average around 20 mins each when they play live, which is why everyone jokes that if GY!BE ever played a festival set, they would get to play 3 songs and be done...but remember within each of those songs are a lot of different layers, pieces, parts, etc, so when someone says GY!BE will only play 3 songs, it's a bit misleading).
They started in 1994 with just 3 members, released a cassette called "All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling", which was limited to 33 copies and pretty much will be impossible to ever find or come across (you will actually probably have better luck coming across a legit cassette copy of BoC's "Old Tunes", or Kurt's first Fecal Matter demo). They then grew in numbers, released another album in 1997 (F#A#), an awesome EP in 1999 (Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada), a masterpiece in 2000 (Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven), and a final album in 2003 (Yanqui U.X.O. - recorded by Steve Albini) before breaking up. Yeah they broke up because they said they hated the shape the world was in, and were gonna protest the Iraq war by never playing again, or something along those lines. But hard times hit, fans cried for their return, and maybe they had a change a heart, for they reformed back in late 2010, played a handful of shows in 2011, and coming back again this spring (amidst rumors of new materials in the work).
They have a unique atmosphere for their shows, which tends to be pretty intimate...which is why anyone saying they'll be on the main stage in front of 60,000 people before Radiohead is just dumb. The lighting is usually pretty bare, and they normally have film projectors (real film, not some loop being played by a computer) set up showing all sorts of dreary "apocalyptic" type footage, which I think would go over pretty well late night inside the Gobi or Mojave. They're also a pretty strong political band, and are generally considered to be "anarchists"....but I don't pay too much attention to that, so make of that what you will. I tend to stick to their music, which is pretty moving, powerful, emotional, and almost at all times, overwhelming. From their haunting drones, and buildups, to classic pieces such as "Moya", "BBF3", "Gathering Storm", and "Albanian", it's all pretty much perfect in you're in the mood to ditch the shitty neon lights, and sit in a dimly lit area and have your eardrums pounded.
If you want to hear any of their bootlegs, just visit the link below and select a year (if you're curious as to what they'll play or how they'll sound at Coachella - stick with a 2011 bootleg) and choose one of the many bootlegs available. The group I'm most excited about for the weekend. They are solely the collaboration between Dave Roback and Hope Sandoval. You'll recognize Hope from Massive Attack, Air, Jesus and Mary Chain, Chemical Brothers and of course Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions (who featured Colm from MBV). There were regular touring musicians from Opal, Rain Parade, even Hole throughout Mazzy Star's glory days but none of Mazzy Star's songs were particularly influenced by any of the other regulars. All of them were basically born out of Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate and at the end Opal. Dave had originally formed Opal with another lead singer. Opal had begun to gain prominence (touring with Jesus & Mary Chain) when that woman [Kendra Smith] left the band. Roback had known Hope since the mid to late 80s, he knew she could sing (by way of producing a few tracks of Hope's that still haven't been released) and asked her to replace Smith. Because of contractual obligations, Roback couldn't really give up Opal so they dicked around under the moniker until they could leave. Most of what came off of She Hangs Brightly, their debut album, was recorded while likely touring under the Opal name. They do indeed have songs you will recognize. The only song I'll likely post below that they did not write was "Blue Flower," which is a Slapp Happy track. I'll place some select tracks under each release chronologically, closing with the latest single they released upon their formation.
There isn't much to explain about their sound because they're not going for anything particularly difficult to process sonically. Yes, things like it have been played before. There may even be songs about the same subject with the same tone. Nobody, however, could sing these songs like Hope Sandoval and nobody really understood her poetry and lyrics the way Roback does. It's the combination that makes it all worth while and why I'm so glad the two of them are back together.
Mazzy Star released 3 albums from 1990-1996 before calling it quits because Sandoval essentially felt like Capitol Records' slave. In 2000, they reunited briefly with clearly new material but it just never worked out well enough for Roback and Sandoval to solidify anything. The forthcoming record has apparently been finished for the most part since 2009, which is why this reunion has been so anticipated. They began boosting their presence in the media a bit, and it didn't hurt that "Into Dust" started to become popular again from its appearance in a few commercials. They released a new single "Common Burn" with a b-side "Lay Myself Down" released on Halloween last year. The special edition blue vinyl version of this single comes out today technically, if any of you are into that sort of thing. Kurt Cobain was a fan. You will probably be one, too. Plus for 45, Hope is pretty easy on the eyes.
Coachella WILL be the first United States show for Hope Sandoval / Dave Roback truly billed as Mazzy Star since 1996. I obviously highly recommend them. If the dream pop genre entirely is just not your thing, I get it. If you think it sounds great in a YouTube video, then you should probably make sure you block their time out to enjoy something really special on Friday.

THE HORRORS
http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/The_Horrors1.jpg

YES. They are so fucking good live. You're probably going to hear very little from their first two albums, so get familiar with Skying. I loved their performance at ATP, and i know several others including ivankay and getbetter are fans of their live shows too. The Skying tracks are so huge and heavy live.

Madness
http://biglightbuzz.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/madness.jpg
Madness is my number 1 act for the weekend, which is probably not a surprise for most of you, as I am sure many of you may remember my semi-meltdown after Madness was removed from the line up in 2008. Anyways, Madness are a band that is most commonly associated with the two-tone ska revival movement in the UK in the late 70’s/early 80’s, but eventually turned towards making a more pop oriented sound. However, their two-tone ska period is the one most fondly remembered by fans and, in my opinion, as well as the band themselves, this was when their best music was released. Their sets now mostly focus on this period as well, so I will focus on this output from them.
First off, it would be impossible to understand the significance of Madness without knowing a brief history of the two-tone ska movement. This is a long story, but I will make it brief. After World War II Britain faced an extreme labour shortage, so they got a bunch of a people from the West Indies (mostly Jamaicans) to immigrate and fill the labour shortage. Upon arriving, the immigrants found they had to do all the shitty low paying jobs and were forced to live in slums. In the mid-1970’s Britain hit an unemployment crisis which created an environment of hyper racism, as a lot of blame was put on the Jamaican immigrants, even though they had come 20 years earlier. The result was a lot of disenfranchised youth which latched onto music as their way to keep a connection with where they came from, and a lot of British Reggae bands formed. Around this time, bands like The Sex Pistols and The Clash had started playing shows and white disenfranchised youth were finding an identity within the punk subculture. Eventually, the punks discovered reggae and their songs of disenfranchisement, and this struck a chord with them. In basically no time at all, music festivals were being set up which featured punk and reggae acts in a call for unity against racism and asking the government step up, end racism and fix the economy. What resulted was an idea of mixing the two genres together, taking cues from both punk and reggae music, and two-tone ska was created. Most bands also aimed to have both black and white members so they could show in physical way that unity was possible. So there you have it, a brief history of two-tone ska, both the politics and where the sound came from.
Now, as for Madness, while sounding very similar to other two-tone bands such as The Specials and The Selecter, Madness differed from them in one very important way, they were decidedly non-political. While other two-tone bands were writing songs about race issues, police brutality and growing gap between the rich and poor in the UK, Madness were writing songs about being a bunch of silly guys from Camden Town. However, eventually, politics caught up with them. During this period of hyper racism, a lot of skinheads started associating themselves with the National Front and the British Movement, two white supremacist groups which were gaining popularity in England. As a side note, this was quite ironic considering skinhead culture was based in borrowing the style and music of Jamaican culture. Anyways, Madness sported the mod/skinhead style and, as Madness were the only two-tone ska band without a black member in the band, a lot of racist skinheads who associated themselves with the National Front and the British Movement, adopted Madness as a “skinhead” band and there are documented cases of attacks on black British youth at Madness shows by these skinheads. Madness condemned the attacks and said while their songs aren’t about racism and its problems, they as a band still believed racism was a prominent problem in the UK and that the calls for unity by the two-tone ska movement needed to be heard.
But enough of politics, as mentioned previously, the two-tone sound was a result of the mixture of reggae and punk music, and when you listen to the music, I think the influences are obvious. The first Madness album One Step Beyond... was released in 1979 and here are the first three songs from that album
N-uyWAe0NhQ
Pw-8AGRcyvk
PSTHMxBttlU
Then they released Absolutely, another great two-tone ska album. I also feel like I should mention here how fantastic they sound since their reunion. Here is a song from Absolutely performed live at Glastonbury 2009. Note the flying saxophonist at 1:05.
Q7L6Ti8PrRE
After this, like I mentioned earlier, they started moving in a more pop-oriented direction. There are some great songs from this period, but their most well known song is this one:
4p4RWBCEFRo
Which is undeniably one of the best pop songs of the 1980’s.
I could go on an on about Madness, but I will leave it here. Madness will be one of the best live acts of the weekend(s) and they are sure to start a dancing frenzy. This will be their first show in the US since 2006 and I don’t know if they will play many more around it, so do not miss this set.

"Hard Road to Travel" and "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" are considered his best I think but he is very prolific with over 25 albums and a number of compilations so you might want to check out his "20th Century Masters, The Millennium Collection" which has all his greats.

What this man does may seem simple and boring to some, they simply do not know how hard an MPC is to use or the skill it takes to use it in the way that araabMUZIK does. He is known to many as the "MVP of the MPC" for unmatched speed and flow on the powerful drum machine. araabMuzik, born Abraham Orellena, is a Rhode Island native whose musical background stems back to the age of three when he first began drumming. He was quickly picked up by Dipset and has produced many of their tracks as well as tracks for about every big name in the hip/hop industry. A great quote from the man himself on his production technique really stuck out
"I’m not the type that needs to smoke a blunt or have a drink to be creative. “I just sit down and think of what I’m going to do or how I’m going to do it. It doesn’t take long… no more than ten minutes for me to complete a beat. It’s always like 10-15 minutes the most and then I’m done.”
Footage of his live shows have garnered millions of views and well deserved respect, so it's only right that he was billed for Coachella. Now the only question that remains is will he play sometime in the Oasis Dome or really early in the Sahara Tent. I personally hope it's the latter he deserves such a stage to showcase his music.
Two videos REALLY worth watching..
The first is a 6 and half minute documentary with a phenomenal live production that starts at 3:48

Flying Lotus (born Steven Ellison)
An experimental multi-genre music producer from Winnetka, California. His debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006. He produced much of the bumper music on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block, for which he is uncredited, and he also contributed remixes for fellow Plug Research artists including Mia Doi Todd. He is often referred to as "FlyLo" by fans and critics. His grandmother is songwriter Marilyn McLeod. He is the great-nephew of the late Alice Coltrane, whose husband was John Coltrane. He is also the cousin of musician Ravi Coltrane.
In 2007, he announced that he signed with Warp Records. Following his Warp debut, the six-track Reset EP, he became one of the label’s cornerstone artists and released his second album, titled Los Angeles, on June 10, 2008. In 2008, Flying Lotus also remixed "Reckoner" from Radiohead's album In Rainbows. His third album, Cosmogramma, was released on May 3, 2010, in the UK and May 4, 2010, in the US. In January 2011, Cosmogramma won in the Dance/Electronica Album category in The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards.
Recently, Flying Lotus collaborated with the Ann Arbor Film Festival in the performance of a live scoring of the 1962 avant-garde film Heaven and Earth Magic. In a post-viewing interview with the audience, Flying Lotus said he was unsure whether or not a recording of the performance (or a recreation of it) would be publicly released, but he would be enthusiastic toward similar projects in the future. He was chosen by Battles to perform at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival that it co-curates in December 2011 in Minehead, England.
In January 2011, Flying Lotus won The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards for his video "MmmHmm" in the Video, Short Form category. Flying Lotus will be collaborating with R&B singer Erykah Badu on new material for her next album. In August 2011, Flying Lotus announced a multimedia project with filmmaker Miwa Matreyek, which is to be titled The Mapping of Countries Yet to Come. It is currently rumored that Flying Lotus plans to remix one of Radiohead's songs from The King of Limbs.

Totally disagree. Might be one of my fav undercards in the years I've gone (2009-2011). Excluding the shit-pop-cheese-house, this lineup is so good for my taste. The only undercards of the last 3 years that stick out to me as distinctly better are Sunday 2009, and Friday 2010.
All the bad electronic music on this year's lineup really just gives me a chance to stay out of the Sahara and load up on the great indie undercard acts.

I think he was talking about the under-undercard. All the bands I had never heard of sucked.

Yeah this is what I'm referring to. This lineup is strong as fuck(well minus most of the sahara).

The undercard is, or atleast there isn't much to discover. It's so top heavy, there is def. a lot of filler.
I agree. I haven't discovered nearly as many bands as past years. The line up as a whole is just as good as the rest of em though

Give me 5 bands you've discovered that you didn't know before, that you have fallen in love with?

"fallen in love with" is a heavy term but 5 bands that I'm extremely excited to see who I didn't know before the lineup came out (maybe had seen the name as a rumor, but hadn't listened to any music)
-Refused
-Mazzy Star
-fIREHOSE
-Azealia Banks
-Destroyer (had only heard the 2011 album)
There's much more obviously. I know I picked a lot of bigger names (the first three), but I had never heard of them and can't wait to see them now. There are less "bands I didn't know" on this lineup only because I listened to music from 2011 really thoroughly last year. Personally, I think the talent is excellent across all days.

hahaha I don't think picking out 3 of the most highly-anticipated reunion acts qualifies as answering that question at all, but good on you for liking hem anyway.

Just goes to show that there's a big difference in what people are familiar with right off the bat.

I was honestly shocked with how many people here had NEVER listened to Refused before the line up got anounced. I remember blasting "New Noise" and "Deadly Rhythm" at unsafe volumes when I was like 14. I also remember being really bummed to discover Refused broke up around the time I was still listening to Backstreet Boys.

The Shape of Punk to Come was so fucking crazy the first time I heard it. They had already broken up since they couldn't even make it through that tour, but it was a huge part of my senior year of high school.

Surprisingly, my girlfriend had heard of Refused and listened to them back in the day, but she didn't realize it until she played one of their songs after the lineup came out. It all came back lol.

Yeah so true, I'm learning that at the moment. I am also surprised how many didn't know refused. I've been putting them on every playlist I'm making for friends.

It's easy to not be aware of the ages of people on here. Refused broke up 14 years ago and I believe ods.. is 20.

Yeah, Refused was such a big part of my music evolution, so people not knowing them surprised me as well. I remember VERY MANY stoned conversations as a 15/16/17-year-old where someone would say something like, "Man, Refused was so fucking right, this really was the shape of punk to come. They were so good...I wish I had been born earlier, we missed all the good shit."

I heard an Oberhofer song on the radio just now, they definitely have that Ramones-ish sound that Terry Malts has, both of whom do it well.

I'll tell ya one thing about the lineup: they really blew it by not getting Kurt Vile OR The War on Drugs to play.

Agreed. I'm really happy Sasquatch booked both.

Yeppp. And Porcelain Raft and The Men. But hey, what can you do.

Ahh, sonofabitch. That likely means that Kurt will be part of The War on Drugs, and I can almost 100% guarantee that Adam will be a Violator.

I'll have to re-visit Kurt Vile. His music didn't stick with me like TWOD's did.

I think I slightly prefer Smoke Ring For My Halo to Slave Ambient, but Come to the City was the best song of last year, so maybe it's all a wash.

We get The War On Drugs in Primavera, but not Kurt Vile. Slight sad face.

I thought they were the better live act. Seen Kurt 3 times, TWOD once, and the latter was absolutely astounding.
