Maybe my most anticipated set. He is going to have to bring it pretty hard given the standard he set in 2010.

despite that i know for a fact that maybe 20 people saw his set in 2009, it still bothers me that people pretend like his only festival performance to date was the 2010 gobi set. 09 set was fucking magical. 2010 was par for the course except that it sounded a lot better in the gobi than the dome's shitty system in 09.

The best part about this is that the crowd will thin out as soon as they realize it's not filthy brostep so we can actually enjoy this set.

Yes. His dome set was fucking bananas good. I don't know if you've heard his DEMF 09 set, but it's quite similar as it happened a month or so after Coachella. Oh, and it's quite good, yes. I wasn't sure how he was planning to top his 2010 set, but unleashing a new album live certainly has strong potential.

I think it's on my external HD, I'll get you a mediafire link once I find it and upload. The first 10 mins. is Steve warming up, the middle 30 are lights-out good, and the last 25 are him previewing shit off Cosmogramma. I think I played it for Cara a few months back, she can attest to its face-melting capabilities.

yeah they were both really good. my drunk-ass might have been overstating it a little bit there haha. 2009 was nice because of how it felt like an intimate little get-together, but honestly the sound wasn't great and I think 2010 was simply a superior set. also 2010 was the first time I ever saw a huge crowd of people go ape-shit to Flylo whereas previously it had only been small groups. it felt like a coming out party of sorts for him, it was really cool. and you could tell how stoked he was afterward for the reception he got. one of my favorite Coachella sets of all time.

Here's a little Flylo rundown I posted in another thread...

Flying Lotus (born Steven Ellison)

An experimental multi-genre music producer from Winnetka, California. His debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006. He produced much of the bumper music on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block, for which he is uncredited, and he also contributed remixes for fellow Plug Research artists including Mia Doi Todd. He is often referred to as "FlyLo" by fans and critics. His grandmother is songwriter Marilyn McLeod. He is the great-nephew of the late Alice Coltrane, whose husband was John Coltrane. He is also the cousin of musician Ravi Coltrane.

In 2007, he announced that he signed with Warp Records. Following his Warp debut, the six-track Reset EP, he became one of the label’s cornerstone artists and released his second album, titled Los Angeles, on June 10, 2008. In 2008, Flying Lotus also remixed "Reckoner" from Radiohead's album In Rainbows. His third album, Cosmogramma, was released on May 3, 2010, in the UK and May 4, 2010, in the US. In January 2011, Cosmogramma won in the Dance/Electronica Album category in The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards.

Recently, Flying Lotus collaborated with the Ann Arbor Film Festival in the performance of a live scoring of the 1962 avant-garde film Heaven and Earth Magic. In a post-viewing interview with the audience, Flying Lotus said he was unsure whether or not a recording of the performance (or a recreation of it) would be publicly released, but he would be enthusiastic toward similar projects in the future. He was chosen by Battles to perform at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival that it co-curates in December 2011 in Minehead, England.

In January 2011, Flying Lotus won The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards for his video "MmmHmm" in the Video, Short Form category. Flying Lotus will be collaborating with R&B singer Erykah Badu on new material for her next album. In August 2011, Flying Lotus announced a multimedia project with filmmaker Miwa Matreyek, which is to be titled The Mapping of Countries Yet to Come. It is currently rumored that Flying Lotus plans to remix one of Radiohead's songs from The King of Limbs.

Will the majority of the crowd be tripping and just staring at the visuals or is it a party? Not that I care if you trip, I just like to party.

Can't believe I missed his Dome performance in 09. Anyone have any good clips from it?

That year the dome was im the middle of the fest grounds, but fairly close to the Doo-Lab and Gobi...Lots of cross noise going on, unless you were inside the dome, it probably sounded like shit. Probably why they moved the dome near the entrance/next to what is now car camping Lot 8. Or as I called it "middle of nowhere" The dome location last year was perfect, back inside the festival grounds, next to the foodcourt, bathrooms, etc....cross noise Minimized.

On that note wherever flying lotus is put this time, i will be there.

His dome set in 09 was great. It was a lot of fun watching daedelus into kode 9 into flylo. One of my favorite Coachella nights ever. Just flew solo and danced my butt off. 2010 was a whole new level though. I am sure he is going to step it up again this year.

I really hope he does not conflict with Radiohead or Godspeed. I just talked to Efrim from godspeed tonight at a silver mt. zion show and he said they are definitely playing at night due to visuals. There is going to be some kind of overlap :/

Yes, it happens when you have multiple headliners on the same stage.

It's definitely possible. Usually reserved for big name dance acts like tiesto and the chemical brothers, but anything could happen.

No. Don't copy and paste a wiki page and claim it as your own. Don't copy and paste wiki at all, anyone interested in Steve's music has already seen the wiki.

The crowd will be packed and skewed slightly to the douchey side. I don't know if that means tripping or partying or what, but plan on a lot of clueless idiots.

No. In 09 the dome was located near the entrance. And his dome set was the party set of the weekend, I feel bad for anyone who was wasting their time at the Killers, Atmosphere, or MSTRKRFT.

Fly Lo will not conflict with Radiohead. I foresee a conflict with Bon Iver or The Shins, and potentially Mangum on the outdoor. The latter being just as much of a shit conflict though.

Yes, I remember it being near the Do Lab in 07. Very weird spot. Granted, the tents, outdoor, and do lab weren't nearly as big then, but still a terrible location.

[QUOTE=greghead;2384538]No. Don't copy and paste a wiki page and claim it as your own. Don't copy and paste wiki at all, anyone interested in Steve's music has already seen the wiki.

I never claimed anything as my own. I copy and pasted everything from Wiki and added videos for people on here that are interested in Flylo so that they don't have to go there, they can just see it here. Just making it more convenient for everyone, and this was initially posted in the Rundown thread. I just decided to include it here since people are talking about his return. Greg

I'm really hoping Thom Yorke and Flylo are doing one of the campgrounds sets on Saturday. That would easily put it over the top as the best day of the festival

I think that's a reasonable expectation. Of course for that to happen, some sort of conversation like this would have had to occur:

Paul Tollet: All right Thom, here are the contracts. You just sign on the dotted line and this is a done deal. Two consecutive weekends of Radiohead. Boy-o-boy, Coachella's gonna have some happy campers this year.

Thom: Right-right, Mr. Tollet. Just one question. What's this bit at the bottom in fine print?

Paul Tollet: Oh Thom, don't worry about all that legal mumbo jumbo. Leave that to the lawyers.

Thom: "Late-night campground set?" What the fuck is this bollocks? I thought you wanted my band to headline.

Paul Tollet: Of course, Thom. You and the rest of Radiohead will play the main stage for two hours. But after that, we thought it'd be nice for our onsite festival goers if you stuck around for a couple hours to entertain all the kids who are too high to go to sleep. Flying Lotus is already on board and we thought it would be great if you could lend some live vocals to And The World Laughs With You.

Thom: You must be joking.

Paul Tollet: I certainly am not. Why do you think I said we were going to have "happy campers" this year? I don't think I'm being unreasonable.

Thom: All right, fair enough. Can't let Jeff Goldblum have all the fun now, can we?

Something like that. I'm sure it will happen.

With no exaggeration his '10 performance just might of been the greatest live musical performance I've ever seen in my entire life from any artist (and I've seen 100s of acts live from all genres in music). I don't know about you, but I felt like I was in a different universe from start to finish. The combination of his music, that incredible video playing behind him, and the energy in that tent was something I've never experienced before. Literally everyone was dancing the entire time and the cheers after his set was definying. I would go as far as to say that it was on par with Daft Punk's set (at least in terms of the energy and the music). Ive seen him live twice since that '10 performance and they weren't even half as powerful as his coachella set.

They didn't have another tent going during Thom Yorke. It was only Thom Yorke and Plastikman.

And if I remember correctly, during Roger Waters, the only other stage going was the Sahara Tent with Chromeo, Modeselektor, and Simian Mobile Disco (rip sahara tent). I could be wrong.

No, that would be beyond beyond epic.

With that said, the chances of TY being at MS set is less likely bc they're performing on different days.

Is it safe to assume that Flying Lotus will be in L.A again this year? I heard he played a bunch of shows later last year, will that happen again?

Yes. He'll be all around L.A. Trust that.

I'd say it's highly likely. and about damn time, too

If he were still touring Cosmogramma I'd agree that it would be pretty likely (I'm sure Thrundercat would be there as well), but since he's debuting a new album I don't really think it will happen. We have no idea who worked on this album with him, and I don't think Thom would make an appearance if he isn't on the new tracks in the first place.

Went in w/ such high expectations but Flying Lotus was a tedious muddle at TI. Going to give him another chance at Coachella. Hoping for better. It may be this sort of thing doesn't quite do it for me.

Felt exactly the same. I went in thinking I was going to get my mind blown but it was all over the place. Just too much stopping and abrupt transitions. It wasn't horrible but defnitely not memorable.

Also can't wait to hear the new album live.

Flying Lotus has his good days and bad days. Everyone does. But I have plenty of faith that Coachella will be special. This is his home festival (home being LA). My guess is he brings out some guests... Tokimonsta is in town and obviously GLK is also playing as well as Thundercat. There's gonna be some Brainfeeder madness going on for his set, no doubt.

As the friend in question, I should apologize and clarify. He tweeted that he was excited to check out Godspeed You! Black Emperor at Coachella, not Gaslamp Killer. So yeah, I uh mixed up the names there. Sorry to start a false rumor. Still possible though.

That's because he didn't. His set was actually my biggest disappointment of the weekend because a lot of the songs he played have been in his festival sets over the past 6-12 months. Check out his Sasquatch set for last year and you'll see what I mean. There was some new stuff I hadn't heard before sprinkled in which was good (a little more like Los Angeles than Cosmogramma), but the "debuting entire album in full" sadly did not happen.

nah he never said he was going to do the whole thing, just that he would play some new songs from it, which he did. And they sounded fantastic. I believe he played at least three new ones.

Second favorite set of the weekend for me. I didn't think he'd be able to top his 2010 set, but he did. He interspersed his trippy introspective shit and the more upbeat bangers perfectly. Ending with "Hard In The Paint" made me lose my shit.

Edit: oh and seeing Earl come out, look really sheepish and then put on his glasses before walking off was pretty funny. Apparently Dre was watching this set from the side as well.

I only say underwhelming because I was expecting more with this new album debut (which most of it were tracks I already heard). That and the constant "IS THAT ODD FUTURE!!!???" bullshit totally ruined the vibe. It started to get to Gaslamp Killery when that shit happened.

Overall, it was a good set. It just happened to be mostly predictable. Give me his DEMF 2009 set over this shit ANY DAY.

FlyLo has forever changed the way I look at DJ'ing/DJ's. He set the bar, and I dont think anyone in the near future will be able to touch it. I would hand the title of best DJ from Andy C to FlyLo now, but I feel calling FlyLo a DJ at this point wouldnt do it justice. Whatever he was doing with sound worked, and it worked damn well.

greghead
04-17-2012, 09:37 AM
It wasn't that his set was bad, it was quite good. It's just the exact same set he's been playing for over a year, with a couple new tracks (tracks we've already heard) mixed in for a minute or two. That was disappointing given his claims of debuting a new album at that set. And he spent way too much time talking about Odd Future. Who gives a fuck about Earl Sweatshirt? I mean, besides 19 year-olds?

He's usually hyper-focused and I feel like the set turned into a circus midway through due to all the losers from Odd Future hanging out on the stage. I'm not hating, I still had a lot of fun, it just wasn't nearly as good as it could/should have been if he didn't stop to talk every 90 seconds.

With the exception of the jazz show he did at Echoplex I hadn't seen him since his last Coachella set, so it was everything I was hoping for and more. He played a little bit of everything: trippy laid back stuff, Dilla, ignorant rap, free jazz, Los Angeles/Cosmogramma tracks, new tracks (at least new to me). Might be my favorite set of his just because of how much fun it was. It was the perfect Flying Lotus festival set.

Anyone have the setlist or know where to find it?

Shit was four-car-rectangles.
The best thing about FlyLo is his big-ass grin. You could see that shit from the Do Lab.
Yeah, he played that same Oizo-into-Idioteque transition that he's dropped in sets over the past few years, but I was more than happy to hear it. Especially right before I was headed to the Radiohead set.

Did anyone else see that fistfight that was started by the jackass in the fuzzy bear helmet thing [I think]? That guy was a sociopath who needed to be removed. Moshing is cool, but how you gonna punch someone in the face a buncha times, dude?
