I am dying to see the Shins. Their new material is wonderful. It should be a moving set. I still wonder why james Mercer fired so many of the original members, but the new members more than hold their own musically, from what I have heard.

He didn't fire "so many" of the original band members, he fired all of them. I don't really give a fuck about his new band, he's no better than Billy Corgan to me at this point. And why on earth are they billed so high?

Most people only think of Mercer when they think of the Shins, unlike the Smashing Pumpkins of yore.

yeah, it doesn't really bother me...i don't know who the other guys that got fired were...don't care.

Who cares who is backing Mercer as long as it sounds the same. Its not like its Radiohead or anything.

They had really bad sound at Lolla 06, but I will give them another chance depending on the schedule. Really like the new single.

Very boring performance at OSL. But we were in the back, think you have to get close to the stage for this one.

I think James Mercer is a worthless sack of shit, but I've been wanting to see Phantom Limb (among many others) live for a while now so I'll happily sit through their set.

Mercer is not worthless artistically, he just like to fire people by fax.

I like the new single..not that different sounding from their old stuff so I'm not quite sure what Danger Mouse's contribution was.

i lost interest around when 'wincing' came out and lost even more when i heard kevin spacey fired the band. i know its his band and his songs but marty crandall brought alot of stage presence for a keyboard player

i'll probably check em out in passing for nostalgia sake but i dont expect to watch their whole set

Pretty excited for this. I have never watched The Shins live before so, regardless of who is backing him up (Joe Plummer from Modest Mouse is the current drummer; that sounds good to me) I will be there.

i'm a fan of bands that make a new version of their already established sound rather than trying to do what has already worked, so the new single didn't have me going back for another listen but ill be checking out their set considering my appreciation for the previous albums

Hilarious with the Spacey reference. I completely agree with the rest of it as well. Firing all of your childhood friends from New Mexico and getting too big for your britches was a bad move for Mercer. I've seen them live quite a few times over the years ever since they used to open up for Modest Mouse in the late 90s in Seattle after Isaac discovered them, and they've always been kinda boring. Marty cracking one liners brought some comic relief to the timid seriousness of Mercer. The last album was a severe disappointment anyways in relation to their first two records. Who knows, maybe he'll surprise me and turn it around with a new cast of band mates?

Seen them four times and they are hit or miss live. My favorite set I saw of them was at Vegoose when they dressed up as Nuns and only spoke to the crowd in a screeching alien speak. They were really on at that show. The keyboardist really did add a lot to the live set so we'll see what this new crew can do. Definetly a week 1 watch just in case they tear it up and I wanna see them both weekends.

I was also there at OSL. While it was cool to see them live as they've been one of my favorite bands since middle school, the stage presence and energy was just not there. I'll probably give them another shot this year, but they are definitely not one of my must-sees for the weekend.

I enjoyed the title track and maybe 1-2 other tracks on the album, but overall it fell flat for me. I guess it's not really surprising, but I am curious as to what others think about it.

Simple Song is a quality song off the new album. The second song they played on SNL was a snoozer. Makes me think twice about settling in for a Shins-Bon Iver-Radiohead closer on the main. May have to venture over to the Ferris wheel.

Agreed. We were near the back to and the sound kinda sucked @ that stage if you were in the back, but I have seen them 3 times and never been very imprssed. I really, really love The Shins too. They just don't bring it live.

And you missed an awesome set at that. I skipped The Shins knowing they'd be around the entire next year, and boy was I right. Heard I missed a mediocre set from my friends who left and caught the last couple songs of the 2nd Phish set. They regret it.

I suppose that it will not help their case as a live band that Mercer fired Marty Crandall, also known as the guy formerly responsible for the band's stage presence, banter.

Just saw them at SXSW. Completely unimpressed. I am a huge Shins fan, so this sucks. Their sound was horrible, Mercer has absolutely NO stage presence, in fact, it looked like he didnt want to be there/was in pain for some reason. Either way, it didnt look like he was having fun, which is a huge deal for artists at a concert. When the keyboard player hit a wrong note once, he looked over and stared him down with an evil look for like 5 seconds straight. It's sad that Mercer seems to be such a dick.

The best part about the set was the fact that their new guitarist (Jessica Dobson) is probably one of the cutest chicks I've ever seen playing guitar ever.

Oh, also that it was free :)

And for anyone who is wondering, their setlist went: Good Song, New Song, Good Song, New Song, Good song, etc. At least they played through all the hits.

I remember when I had this same thought when seeing Polyphonic Spree 6 years ago. Whodathought?

ANYWAY, I'm frustrated that after a few full listens, Port of Morrow is proving to be completely forgettable. I might let this free up a potential conflict, as I've seen them live a few times when I liked nearly all of their catalog...
