only way he can close the outdoor is if guetta is closing the main stage. I will not stand for a Radiohead/Mangum conflict!

Dammit, I really wanted to start this thread and call it: "Crying With Strangers, or, Jeff Mangum is the reason I'm attending Coachella this year"

Because, yeah. This is why i decided to break my two year Coachella absence and attend. See you all at the front of the stage on Weekend 2. I'll be the one crying my eyes out and reliving what it was like to be 14 years old.

summerkid
01-12-2012, 10:07 PM
That would also be terrible! Guetta would drown Mangum out. Leonard Cohen Spot in 09 is the way to go. How about if he plays sunset on the outdoor before The Shins go on?

This is where my glance was first drawn on the poster and nothing else could live up to that moment of sheer child-like glee. I really hope they pair him well against something that won't make it impossible to enjoy the quiet moments, of which there are obviously many.

He was amazing at ATP in September. I'm not sure how it will fly at Coachella, but if they can do something like what they did for Cohen, that would be cool. Even though it was predicted, still a great get for the fest.

A whiney dude with a guitar at that.

The only reason he went to the Occupy Wall Street Protests is because all the hipsters (those who are pissing their pants to see him) was to get that uniqueness and publicity to stroke his upcoming tour.

It worked for him. The sheep are following.

If he doesn't get a sunset slot - how about early one before all the bands get going
at noon in the mojave tent.

He did a matinee show at the ATP festival - this will be like that.

And it will free up Saturday nights already too many possible conflicts.

I don't see this at all. Jeff will probably be starting somewhere around 7ish. Bon Iver won't start until like 9 at the earliest. Radiohead not until 11. Possibly conflicting with Noel Gallagher, but seeing as I see Noel also being on the Outdoor Stage, I'm not really foreseeing that either.

Oh, one last thing - whoever was at the first Oakland show and got the True Love Will Find You In The End cover, I fucking hate you.

I've been working on my untouchable cynicism for years. YEARS. But the first lick of "Carrot Flowers", my tears exploded from some well in my body I haven't heard from in a very long time. I had barely pulled it together to focus on WTF was happening in front of me, then this. It felt like being ejected from the spaceship in the last-chance pod. I'm doing my best, but there are no words. Last night was so precious to me that I couldn't, and didn't, tell anyone today what I'd seen. I couldn't bear to tell anyone who wouldn't understand what happened there.

This is officially the most twee thing I've ever written on the internet.

Definitely the set of the weekend - BY FAR. Can't get it out of my head.

We got about 20 feet from the stage - right in the center. Total sing along in a great
way to all the songs. So much fun. It was absolutely perfect. Saw him twice at ATP
last year but being able to sing along out loud with everyone made it very special, and
the horns were the very very best.

Can't wait for next Monday's show in LA !!!!

This was such a fun set. Got right in the front and center. Jeff was encouraging everybody to sing along. Horn players came out for a few songs. He said something along the lines of how much fun it was to play these songs as they were originally written. The people up front were super respectful and didn't talk during the set at all.

Not very big at all, actually. We walked over after Noel Gallagher & found ample space on the right side of the stage to lay in the grass & not have anyone within a 10 foot radius around us. After 20 minutes, we got up and walked to about 3 people back from the rail on the very far right side of the stage, then were successful in getting to about the same spot on the left side of the stage for the final 2 songs. I was surprised the crowd was so sparse, but it really was kind of perfect.

He isn't comfortable with photographs or videos being taken of him so there was an announcement made before to abstain from taking any during his performance. He's a normal guy just like any of us, why not respect his wishes. It's not like he even bugged out at the crowd which obviously had cameras up in the air.

One of the main well documented reasons he stopped performing was because of the sudden and overzealous attention from fans and the media. I'm not saying everyone needs to be a historian of the guy but its a simple human (shocker!) request and to get in a huff about it is egregiously childish.

Did anyone else see Jeff be a total man of class and get up during his set to help the girl that passed out? What a fucking gentleman.

Crowd was banned. A woman from who knows where came up to me and said no cameras allowed. I looked at her and said, "You are kidding." She said no. Then said to put the camera away to respect Jeff's wishes. "This is about his music, not about photos. You can show him respect or not. It's your choice."

Oh, please. Jeff came onto the stage, sat in a chair and started with some whiney ass folksong. No photos my ass. I took a few then left. He gives out bad karma. Why would GV book an "artist" who does not allow photography. It's a Music & Arts Fest. Sheesh.

gps, this is probably your worst post. talk about bad karma.

I took a picture of the crowd from back by the food court area but Jeff isn't visible. I hope he doesn't mind.

loved the set and the brass ensemble for aeroplane. And his little speech to the audience. Which leads me to my disappointment in the audience. Why wasn't every song a massive song along?

I kind of dislike massive sing alongs. I don't want to to hear the brochella dude next to me, I came to hear the artist. I thought Jeff's performance last night was amazing. I wanted to snap a picture but after not just one, but two announcements to the crowd to please not take pictures I decided to respect Jeff's request. I think I was one of the few who did. Everyone around me were ninja snapping pictures.

He kept trying to get the audience to join in on a few though and it was like dead air. If there are bros out there that know NMH lyrics then that's slight progression, right?

Well the guy next to me last weekend decided to sing louder than Jeff and especially on the parts where Jeff stretches his voice to its outer limits (which obviously, that guy did terribly)... that was fun.

Eh yeah. That sounds horrible. I don't know, I was very close and it just seemed like people should have been more into it. A lot of people just looked lost. I was ecstatic to be there.

Anyway I can understand why people were singing loudly, Jeff specifically said to "sing as loud as you can", I just thought it was common sense not to sing louder than Jeff could be heard.

I liked the loud sing alongs from weekend 1. We saw him twice in New Jersey at ATP Festival last year and you
could hear a pin drop the entire show. So it was nice to let it out this time and sing. Hope its similar tomorrow
for the LA show, at least for some of the songs.

Some songs, sure. I'd be most happy if it were quiet the whole time. But some light singing wouldn't bother me and would maybe even be addititive.

Set of the weekend? I'd say so. He was SO much more powerful than when I saw him at ATP last year, and the horns were a great addition. The crowd around me was singing along the whole time and knew every single word. His facial contortions during Oh Comely were spectacular.

haha i was standing next to that guy trying sing louder than Jeff, shit was so annoying especially since it seemed he was trying to match Jeff's voice and was failing miserably. around the 4th song some dude with dread locks pushed his way right in front of him to about the 3rd row and as soon as the guy tried singing loudly again Dread Lock bro turned around and shushed him.

As an aside, Coachella should have booked Weekend this year, a) because they are awesome, and b) to cause mass confusion.

I was singing loudly at jeff mangum, but I thought that was what we were supposed to do. To me, Jeff's music isn't something you can hoard all to yourself and keep it forever. I loved it when everyone was singing along to the more well known songs because it felt like this was music that can bring all these people that don't know each other together, because they have the words and melodies of his songs all in common. everyone who is bitching about people singing loudly needs to realize that it's not music that they can just keep to themselves.

Ahhhh Jeff Mangum was so amazing!

Before he started, my boyfriend nudged me and pointed to the guy in front of me, who had a giant tear through his pants and boxers. We started quietly giggling (mature, I know) and the guy he was with noticed us laughing, so my boyfriend said "now that's a rip in the pants!" or something like that and the other guy said "he's had a rough day". We could not stop laughing. If any of you are that guy, thanks for the entertainment.

I was on the rail on the left of the stage, slightly in front of bmack.

I dunno about you all, but it seemed like everyone around me was singing. I mean, maybe my friend and I were just really loud. Or maybe it was substances making me THINK people were singing. Either way, I had a blast at the set. Snapped some covert photos, too.

Jeff is such a considerate performer.

Think about what you saw and then report back to me which instrument it was.

LA show last night had an amazing set (audio recorded all but two songs) but the crowd SUCKED. No one was emotionally into it, no one around me in the balcony cheered for the "On Avery Island" jams and NO ONE was singing. Older guy next to me told me to stop crying because it was distracting him (I wasn't being loud, just sniffling a bit) and these 15 year olds on a date were so pissed at me for singing all of "Song Against Sex." (They sucked; I heard them say to every non-Aeroplane song, "Is this a new song from a new album?" or some variant. Stupid fucking kids.)

I'll upload the LA show tonight.

Ah, never mind then. There was a guy to my right that looked like you and when everyone swayed together I had my arms around my girlfriend and he grabbed me saying "YOURE IN THIS TOO BUDDY!" and forced me to sway. It was pretty awesome, he was really stoked and knew all the lyrics.
