This is Swedish House Mafia.

They are three Swedish dudes. They play a bunch of songs that go “Boom boom boom boom” and then the bass drops out and there’s a part people sing along to and then the bass comes back in going “boom boom boom.” Sometimes there are angel sounds.

It is important to note that the three members of Swedish House Mafia do not function as individuals separate and independent from the Swedish House Mafia itself. Simply stated, the three members of Swedish House Mafia will individually only play tracks that the Swedish House Mafia as a collective plays.

Last year, two of the three members of the Swedish Mafia, who play the exact same songs individually as the Swedish House Mafia plays as a group, headlined the Sahara two of the three nights of Coachella.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZLZ1Zoci9AA/SKrgfpoTNmI/AAAAAAAAAU4/rnkql0QPE68/s400/afrojack.jpg

This is Afrojack.

He’s Dutch. His songs go “Boom boom boom boom,” but they also have very fast high-pitched sounds that go “woop woop woop woop woop dee doop!” Sometimes Pitbull raps on his songs. He gets hip hop artists to sing on his songs, but David Guetta had hip hop artists sing on his songs first.

It is at times difficult to tell if you are listening to an Afrojack song or an LMFAO song.

http://www.windishagency.com/assets/409/amon_press.jpg

This is Amon Tobin.

He plays weird sounds and shows you weird pictures of things. He is different than other Sahara acts that play weird sounds and show you weird pictures of things, because liking the latter acts makes you a “light show monkey” but liking Amon Tobin makes you a “genius.” People typically stand around and look at the pictures.

http://planetill.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/sebastian.jpg

This is SebastiAn.

He’s French. He’ll smoke cigarettes and twist some knobs on a little panel. Sometimes the music sounds like video game music. Other times it sounds like the Spawn soundtrack. His tracks are “bangin.” He will probably play a DJ Mehdi song. It will be a “moment.”

Sometimes people think he is Kavinsky. He is not.

http://thissongissick.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Feed-Me-DJ-.jpg

This is Feed Me.

He does what SebastiAn does except he gets to do it because he’s friends with Deadmau5. Otherwise, nobody would give a shit. He will also play dubstep. Everyone will be happy and go “fucking duuuuuuuubsteeeeeeep!”

See also Madeon.

http://thissongissick.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DavidGuettasongPics1Hh8Nj1HdEvRRuM.jpg

This is David Guetta.

Hip hop artists think that he needs to produce their songs now. He makes songs that go “Boom boom boom boom” and then the bass drops out and everyone sings along and Usher sings over it and he holds his hands up in the air and then the bass comes back in. He has street cred because he worked with Akon. Afrojack does what he does.

http://soundofmyshoesdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dj-kaskade.jpg

This is Kaskade.

He does what David Guetta and Afrojack do except he doesn’t have as many friends in the music industry. He’s Mormon.

http://static.djguide.nl/image/djfotos/sebastianingrosso.jpg

This is Sebastian Ingrosso.

He is in Swedish House Mafia. He will do what Swedish House Mafia does, including playing the exact same songs. When he plays the Sahara, four of the previous five nights of Coachella will have featured at least one individual member of the Swedish House Mafia or the Swedish House Mafia itself. The individual members of the Swedish House Mafia play the same songs as the Swedish House Mafia.

He is not SebastiAn.

http://www.jadorehousemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Martin-Solveig.jpg

This is Martin Solveig.

He does what David Guetta and Afrojack and Kaskade and Sebastian Ingrosso do, except he only works with white singers. He plays tennis.

http://cdn.synthtopia.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/justice-unplugged.jpg

This is Justice.

They are French and will smoke like SebastiAn and play music like SebastiAn, except there are two of them, so people think they are geniuses. They have a cross that lights up. People see it and are like “Fucking sick!” Then they’re all “Fucking Just-ees!” because they think that’s how French people say “Justice.”

http://stereogumbo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/GirlTalk1.jpg

This is Girl Talk.

He is like listening to your teenage sister’s iPod except if your sister was even more of a weakling than she is now.

http://www.electronicaoasis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/avicii.jpg

This is Avicii.

He is a Swedish DJ that plays songs that go “Boom boom boom boom” and then the bass drops out and then people sing along and then the bass comes back in, except he is not a member of Swedish House Mafia.

http://www.novafm.com.au/lib/images/artist/normal/calvin-harris-8498.jpg

This is Calvin Harris.

He is kind of like David Guetta in that he makes music with Rihanna. He probably won’t play that Rihanna song though. He made an album that sounded like it was made in the 1980s except it was “nu.” Then he made another album and it just sounded like Kaskade, David Guetta, Avicii, Sebastian Ingrosso, Afrojack, and Swedish House Mafia. He’ll probably play the songs that sound like Kaskade, David Guetta, Avicii, Sebastian Ingrosso, Afrojack, and Swedish House Mafia.

http://thruthevine.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/EZ2011_porter_robinson_SRK_Saturday-2076.jpg

This is Porter Robinson.

His songs go “Boom boom boom boom” and then make weird vortex sounds. He sounds like Wolfgang Gartner if Wolfgang Gartner was Wolfgang Gartner.

As you can see, it’s gonna be a groundbreaking year. See you in the tent!

This is Malcolm Jamal Awesome.

When he talks it sounds like "blah-blah-fuckity-blah" and when he farts it sounds like "whooooooooooosh." Instead of doing anything proactive with his life, he spends an absurd amount of time on the internet bitching about a single stage of a festival that features world-class talent in a multitude of other genres on a half dozen stages. He acts upset that people make music that millions of other people like because he wants people on the internet to think he's cooler than those millions of people, but if those millions of people started to like the music he currently likes, he wouldn't like it anymore because then he wouldn't be cool anymore.

I can't talk shit on SebastiAn. Nor can I talk shit on Justice after the last album and the surprising melding-together of the two albums in recent live sets. I guess The Rapture are no longer a Sahara act, but I recall them being in there a few years back, and I love them. Breakbot's pretty cool.

SBTRKT is good. Jacques Lu Cont is acceptable. Boregore's music is shit, but it's fun to say "The thing I love the most is cumming on your face, suck it bitch." And at least he spins vinyl. Modeselektor is cool.

Everything else can go fuck itself, and I'm sure 2012 will be the year when Greg (Meowmixer) rediscovers rock and roll at Coachella.

I was almost sure we'd get some Crosstown Rebels and Visionquest artists. As well as some Turbo Recordings artists. Including Azari & III, but none of that happened. Fuck you, Coachella, for not even trying to get a few token underground DJs. Maybe there will be a dome with a currently unreleased lineup, but otherwise, up yours, Tollett and crew.

so you want someone to come play 2008 ed banger cuts? i've seen the new sebastiAn live setup twice. it fucking blows. i'm praying for crosstown rebels in the heineken dome. i'll gladly chill in there ALL DAY and spend $300 on beer for that.

Doesn't the Heineken Dome usually have older/classic house DJs? I'm with you, but it would make me so irked to see some of the seriously current major talent -- that absolutely would turn the Sahara tent into a huge dance party -- relegated to that space. I think that's what upsets me the most about the EDM offerings. So many smaller, afternoon acts that could have shown the kids how to get the fuck down in a different way.

So, while people can claim that Coachella is not a rave, and us devotees can content ourselves on events like DEMF and Decibel for our electronic music fix, one of the things that really sucks about this Sahara lineup is that it kind of acts as an ambassador of EDM to people who aren't already inclined to it. That's something that was always great about Coachella in the past. People can come for a few certain acts they're already familiar with and with a curious disposition, get turned onto something new altogether, leading them to continue furthering their horizons. With these acts, more rock kids will get their preconceived notion of electronic music being juvenile poppy crap with no integrity or innovation reinforced. Coachella lineups tend to be a barometer of current tastes, with a healthy mix of commercial and cutting edge, but the EDM lineup has been pushed entirely to one end of that spectrum and completely neglected the other one, painting an incomplete and unflattering portrait of what is, at the moment, a staggeringly healthy and vibrant scene. While it sucks for those of us who go and already know, it kind of sucks worse for people who don't yet know that they would like better dance music if they had an opportunity to experience it somewhere like Coachella.

I don't know why I'm selecting your post to start a comment on this year's Sahara, but I am.. so whatever..

I can't talk shit on SebastiAn. Nor can I talk shit on Justice after the last album and the surprising melding-together of the two albums in recent live sets. I guess The Rapture are no longer a Sahara act, but I recall them being in there a few years back, and I love them. Breakbot's pretty cool.

re: SebastiAn... MJA's assessment was off in one thing. He won't actually be turning knobs. Entire set on tape. Moving on...

SBTRKT is good. Jacques Lu Cont is acceptable. Boregore's music is shit, but it's fun to say "The thing I love the most is cumming on your face, suck it bitch." And at least he spins vinyl. Modeselektor is cool.
I'm curious to see what Stuart Price/JLC will bring in a set.. He's been responsible for some amazing things over the last decade. How that will translate into a DJ set (I'm assuming it's a DJ set) is beyond me.
Modeselektor will be dope to see again.

On Visionquest/Crosstown type acts (or someone like Maya Jane Coles)... Having seen the Sahara tent when Sven Vath played last year... I wouldn't be surprised if Goldenvoice decided something along those lines wasn't worth it. It's not a direct analog, but still...
That said, I also wasn't at all surprised that Azari & III weren't on the lineup... Based off what I've known from people working to book them, it's like they've pretty much decided that North America can go fuck itself.

Also, every time I see Calvin Harris and Martin Solveig's names on any lineup it makes me let out a sigh of disappointment. Sure, they've always been poppy, but both of them used to make some music that was at least entertaining. Now they're completely indistinguishable from the Swedish House Mafias of the world.

All in all, it will be another year where I spend very little time in the Sahara (I think last year I was in there for all of two acts). Breakbot & Modeselektor definitely... Probably catch the start of JLC and make a decision from there (obviously this will all be dependent on the set times as well). And, honestly, I'm ultimately OK with that myself. But I can see why many would not be.

Another genre that was completely misrepresented.

I'd say breaks was adequately represented in the way that no one really plays breaks anymore. I think Stanton Warriors is the only breaks DJ set I've seen in the last two years that was actually primarily breaks. Most of the others long ago went electrohouse or are now on the brostep bandwagon.

Trick Loves The Kids
01-13-2012, 01:54 PM
I mean, yeah, it's some chicken vs. egg shit. The lineup for the last few years has been trending towards this big room house nonsense, and last year Sven Vath's set was maybe 1/10th as full as Skrillex's. I almost feel like they're trying to do two festivals, corny mainstream electronic jams in the Sahara all day and then an indie rock festival everywhere else. It's a bummer because legit DJs in the Sahara have always been wonderful, it's an amazing venue for that stuff, but I can kind of understand why they'd want to book Avicii over Derrick Carter or even Hawtin or something.

Ross1492
01-13-2012, 01:57 PM
As to the lack of interest in Visionquest/Crosstown Rebels acts, I say big deal. Plenty of acts on a yearly basis w/ tiny crowds. Always will be. When booking certain acts, GV has to know the turnout will be small. They continue to book these acts all the same.

And I'd say the VQ/CR stuff is waaaaay more popular in the US, specifically the west coast, than Sven Vath.

idk man

I went 09/10, 11 the lineup was a massive letdown

this year it's a lil better and i did want to go

but honestly coachella is a 100% commercial-oriented hollywood enterprise now, I understand that they've booked many classic rare bands in their history but they're obviously running out of steam in regards to that now, of course you can only do that so much given the limited amount of bands that you can reunite and etc.

but this dance lineup is a joke, don't really feel that it's in the classic spirit of coachella at all, aka to book electronic acts that are on the cutting edge, last year they gave a little bit of space to that sort of music hence them booking joy orbison, ramadanman, kode9, etc... but this year.. nothing but trashy ass vegas house and shitty brostep.

like even in 09 in retrospect i know that bloody beetroots and surkin were very trendy acts but they were more relevant to their time than these acts are to now.

i only lament missing coachella due to the immediate sellout and the insane resale prices because of the quality rock bands they bring, even though i'm a huge edm fan. why the fuck didn't they book rustie, lone, girl unit, kingdom etc... it's going to sell out anyways may as well get some quality control in there.

anyways idk i'm drunk as fuck, and i'm ranting

Kind of agree. It feels like an art installation, not a concert piece.

The dudes from Nero are so lame, seen em 4 times and it's never been both of them. I wonder if theyre both going to attend...

nero will be playing a live set (both of them and their singer) which should be great. ive seen Joe play 2 times and he's a pretty bad and lazy DJ, doesnt even play through songs 1/3 of the way before switching. Dan is the good DJ, and together i think they'll be good. their essential mix is great so i dont see why they wouldnt be

When they do dj sets, it's only one of them. They confirmed on Facebook that they're bringing their full live show so it'll be both of them.

I've seen him twice, it was fun both times. Depends on your musical tastes though. His sets are essentially hard electro and dubstep.

Edit: and you better believe the Sahara is gonna be full of bros during his set. *sigh*

It takes the funkless zombie sledgehammer beats of brostep and combines it with the inane lobotomied utopia dream vocal jizz of happy hardcore and trance. But it'll only be good if both of the guys are there.

If it's a live set we should be assured both will be there right?

Sasha opened with that song for his set last year. Great fun.

Nero is going to be a brostomping garbage fest. They used to be a decent dnb act but it took me 5 mins to walk away from their set at bisco last summer (both of them). The entire sunday 2-6 lineup will be dubstep and the kids will love it.

Nero live means they will play their songs. There are no guitars and shit.

Live also means that they have more control over the individual components of their tracks than they would with a standard CDJ setup. They also have a live singer. But yeah, no instruments.

His fans though are completely dumb as shit. Least the ones who were expecting a wob wob song....fucking kids.

"WHY, when I was 11 we had tracks like "Come to Daddy" surface on MTV, when it was about MUSIC! And if you liked a track, you would go down to the store, buy a single and get 6 other tracks! Flim was one of them. It made you wonder as a kid why some screaming music went to something beautiful, but it didn't really matter, as it was all good. Now you kids just wait for something to blow your speakers and you call that music. No wonder this world is going to hell"
