He has a good voice, absolutely, but everything I've heard so far sounds like standard R&B, it's not really standing out. No offense, but if you don't "get it" then it probably will never really hit you (not to sound condescending or anything.) His stuff really isn't standard R&B, its a touch of everything. So spacey, so out there, but still very listenable. Beats are amazing, lyrics are deep and romantic at times but other times about just sippin and drugs, still in a clever way though. Seems like a lot of people fall in love with his music the first time they hear it, and that's how it was with me when I first heard Loft music... and that's where I suggest you start...
http://youtu.be/HOdNMwTNNhA

Like most artists, starts off in the realm of a single genre, very listenable. Then as time goes on, with more mixtapes, his sound gets more out there, less obvious. But better and better each time.

i think you have to be younger than 25 to "get" whatever there is to get about the weeknd. it's average to good-not-great R&B with deep beats and non-standard (for the genre) synth/space sounds. generally it sounds like a college student singing about how difficult life is at the age of 21 (which it isn't, really). like the above guy said, its good but not's not mind-blowing.

For the record, House of Balloons was nominated for the Polaris prize last year (Canada's choice of best music recording.) The Weeknd lost out to Arcade Fire's The Suburbs.

I agree with the above. You don't have to like him; there's a lot of bands that I would say are "talented" that I don't like, simply because they aren't my particular cup of tea. But to say that The Weeknd's approach to R&B is not fresh is outlandish. The talent from Abel is obvious, there's no refuting that claim.

This guy's voice isn't "good" - its incredible - and keeps getting better with each release. I can't help but hear the reincarnation of Michael Jackson on 'D.D.'

The music isn't like anything else I've heard. Its sexy, filthy, and unpredictable. I'm 31 and - like others - not typically an R&B fan, but it is clear to me that Abel is a special talent. Comments like this baffle me:

...sounds like standard R&B, it's not really standing out.

I love the backing instrumentals and the tone of their voices, but the lyrics are taking women and minorities back two generations.

He's supposed to be a problematic narrator. The best part about these albums, if you listen in to the whole situation, is that his crazy, drug-fueled life eventually makes him feel isolated and self-loathing. The character in this songs (I'm assuming Abel Tesfaye is not really gorging himself on cocaine, oxycontin, ecstasy and prostitutes as much as he claims) is a compellingly messy dude with really, really sketchy morals. It's an anti-hero protagonist. Like Dexter or Tony Montana or something.

Also I have a reflexive discomfort with anyone claiming that any one particular piece of artistic anything is having any sort of human-rights-issue consequences. Taking minorities back? Not trying to start some shit, but arguing that because a black dude is singing about doing dark shit its doing some kind of violence to black people as a group insinuates that one member of a race has the power to fuck things up for everybody. If it's that delicate, then we might as well give up the civil rights struggle now. That's an argument that's been hurled at minorities (sometimes by minorities themselves) for a while now, and it's a hair's-width away from saying that a girl deserved to get raped because she was wearing a short skirt.

Not to soapbox. You have the right to your opinion.

What I personally think is so revolutionary about The Weeknd is that he is working in a genre that generally glorifies sex and drugs, while his take is much darker, and ultimately infinitely more realistic. On one hand, his lyrics taken at face value insinuate that he's very much happy with his lifestyle, but the nuances in his vocals and the atmospheric and sometimes menacing production allow you to see what's really happening behind the scenes: the comedowns, the loneliness that anonymous sex can bring, his deep insecurities, borderline addiction, mental health issues, etc. Ironically, his songs are probably the most realistic soundtrack of what really goes down behind the scenes in pop/hip-hop/R&B circles. I think the chorus of House of Balloons really embodies his whole aesthetic...this is a party record on the surface, but it's a party that is threatening to fly of the tracks into chaos or depression at any second, and when he sings the chorus ("this is / a happy house / we're happy here" and "we're having fun, fun, fun, fun") it sounds like he is trying to convince himself more so than anybody else. And then it eventually succumbs to the darkness during Glass Table Girls, only to "wake up", so to speak, with the lush and evocative The Morning, which offers at least a glimmer of happiness until he fucks it all up again.

I also think his widespread popularity is attributable to the fact that our generation (20 somethings) is often described (and fairly accurately) as embracing an extended adolescence and lacking direction in the sense of "I know exactly what I'm doing with my life". Whether or not you're into drugs or anonymous sex, I think he hits notes that a lot of people are feeling.

Last but not least, he has some of the more effortlessly pretty (Rolling Stone), sensual (The Morning), lush (The Zone) and hypnotic (What You Need) R&B songs to come out in years. If these were straightforward songs they'd be great, and the dark and cautionary undertones they embrace take them to a genius level, in my opinion.

I'd love to see him, but I'm trying my best not to commit to anything to the clusterfuck of conflicts that's going to be Sunday after 8:30.

It's dark, twisted, sex, drugs, and R&B music with electronic influenced production perfect to grind out to. Lyrically, many individual songs are lacking but if you listen to the albums collectively, he can sing his ass off so much that you can feel them and get immersed into the character he develops over the trilogy. Someone hurt the dude for sure and it's fun to get into the zone of that protagonist for an hour then back to normal life although like a good mind fuck, it still lingers.

Edit: hmm seems that if I read the posts before me, this point has been sold many times.

I agree. I'm hoping the crowd at Coachella won't out sing him because the venue is bigger and speakers louder then in the videos. I'm afraid since he is a rookie, if the crowd does all the work for him, he may get lazy to the detriment to his performance.

It's okay, there are some standout tracks, but I'm not quite getting why people think his set is going to be some kind of stunning, life changing experience. I guess it's just the rarity factor. Should put those songs from House of Ballons that you like into a playlist and do the same for the other two mixtapes and periodically go back to them. If practice makes perfect, The Weeknd could use a little work
Outrageously hyped Toronto musician fails to impress at Metropolis

The Weeknd is a newcomer in the R&B music industry; his debut mixtape House of Balloons recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Hype surrounding the Toronto artist is almost unbelievable considering his lack of stage experience and radio play. Regardless, Montreal was pumped up and ready for his sold out show Friday night at Metropolis.

Abel Tesfaye is the real name of the man behind the mysterious digital albums, which are available for free on his website. He’s received praise from Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, and House of Balloons was nominated for a 2011 Polaris Music Prize. The Weeknd is known for his crooning soprano voice, which hits falsetto notes effortlessly. The real question was whether his live performance could live up to his studio material.

Approximately 2,000 people filled the venue. The doors opened at 6 p.m., but unfortunately for those standing, an average DJ mixed tracks until 9 p.m. The audience was sedated with boredom, yet still anticipated the show.

Once the DJ left the stage, the energy immediately picked up. The lights dimmed, excited shrieks vibrated throughout the room, and cell phones flew into the air, preparing to document the 22-year-old’s first steps on the stage.

Opening with “High For This,” one of his better-known songs, was a wise choice. Backed by a three-piece band, The Weeknd swayed and jumped around the stage in an attempt to win over the crowd. For an artist who has performed live very little, his effort to engage the audience was valiant, but lacked practice.

Another song that stood out in his performance was “The Zone.” His fans sang along passionately, watching black and white images of nearly naked women projected on a screen behind him.

For the song titled “Montreal,” The Weeknd aimed the mic at the audience, encouraging them to keep singing along.
His set list featured songs from all three of his mixtapes. His voice proved to be genuine, and not enhanced with studio effects. But too often, he sang incomplete sentences or avoided the lyrics altogether. However, his effort at Michael Jackson-like dancing across the stage compensated for his vocals many times.

When the beat for “The Morning” started, the crowd went insane. He also sang “The Fall,” “House Of Balloons/Glass Table Girls,” and “Loft Music.” After his performance, which didn’t seem to last as long as a typical concert, he came back out for an encore: an acoustic performance of “Wicked Games.”

The Weeknd will be back in Montreal for Osheaga in August, after a European tour and performing at Coachella. Hopefully the young artist will develop a better stage presence between now and this summer and will return to Montreal with even more hysteria than before.

For those of you thinking this will be his "second or third" show, he's done about 7 or 8 shows in Canada (all in the Toronto area as well as Montreal and Ottawa). I've been at two of them, both front row. From his first appearance at OVOFest to his most recent shows, he's improved SIGNIFICANTLY. I'm pumped to see him do a big show in front of a huge crowd (all his shows have been relatively small except OVO).

Oh and he's always started with the same song every show so far (don't wanna spoil it for people). I can also almost guarantee he will keep a bottle of henny on stage to drink from. :)

Really great show. Played songs from all mixtapes. Even tried doing some micheal jackson type dance moves. i went to his 5th show but he's done many since then in preparation for coachella. It'll probably be his best show yet.

I'm excited to see the Weeknd. I've been listening to him since last summer and after hearing that this will be his first time performing in California/US it seems like this could be pretty monumental. 95% sure he will still open with 'High For This' even though he tweeted a new 19 song set list.

it was clear he was inexperienced with playing to large crowds, but he was solid. i'd be more interested in seeing him in a couple years when he's had time to sharpen his performances a bit.

Much much better than performance than I expected. I'm not familiar with his stuff but there was one song about half way through that had a fuzzy, shoegazer vibe to go along with his airy, lilting voice. I really liked it. And yea, lots of girls.

Side note- I did try initially to catch Gotye. But that tent was just insane. I have never seen a tent as packed as the one for Gotye.

I'm sure it was pretty empty after he played "Used to Know."

Seriously. We left after about 20 minutes of The Weekend. After nimbly wading through the crowd for 5 minutes, we were still at least 10 feet back of the left side of the tent. As his performance continued, there were people stacked up almost to the Gobi. If there were to be any stage changes for Weekend 2, I think switching Gotye and Girl Talk would probably be the best one.

sonnyboy11
04-16-2012, 03:45 PM
^Agreed. I somehow doubt there will be any venue changes between weekends 1 and 2, but who knows?

And I don't want to digress too much here since this is a thread for the Weeknd (who I very much recommend seeing), but at one point I was in the Beer Garden between the Main stage and the Outdoor stage and found myself choosing between Justice and Girl Talk while I finished my beer. Both were atrocious crap.

Felt like his vocals weren't loud enough, although his voice sounds great live. Crowd response was okay I guess, but that didn't stop me from singing along and getting down. Best song that translated live was 'The Party and the After Party."

This was such an awesome set. Thank god the bass was loud enough... Felt great getting in really close, and Morning > HoB/GTG > What You Need (acoustic) was a perfect ending. I really wanted to hear "Next" though. His band sounded fucking great even if he was a bit flat/off-key in a few parts

This is gonna be great. (Tho, The Weeknd, in a tent, late at night, just seems like it coulda been something just sweaty, grimey, and epic. Not complaining, or anything, just sayin)

^this. He's built for small environments at night. Been at a couple of his shows like this and it was epic.

The Weeknd put on a great performance, but unless you were pretty close to the stage, all you could hear was people talking. :( The volume was ridiculously low and it sort of ruined the set for me... And it was one of my highly anticipated ones, too. I wanted to attack all the people who were talking, but I especially wanted to attack the sound booth for not moving the dial past 1.

There will a million teenage girls screaming for the Weeknd. It was like the audience for the Beatles during the Ed Sullivan show.

I really wanted to enjoy this, but i guess it just wasn't translating to me. The left side was packed at the beginning, but quickly dwindled after about the third song. Excellent voice and sound but we left maybe 4 songs in.

I made it to the front of the soundboard and was very happy with my spot. It was loud enough and the crowd around me was perfect. Singing but not too obnoxiously and no general talking. I thought the music was perfect for sunset on the outdoor. He was off key at times but I hardly even noticed until watching the webcast. If any 2nd weekenders are contemplating seeing him, I suggest to get there early and move in closer.

For a brand new artist, its pretty impressive that he could play a whole set and still have songs that I wished he played. I think he will be huge after a year of touring. Looking forward to the Fillmore show.

I agree roast. Even though he didn't hit every single note, I loved the set and the band sounded perfect. Exactly what I wanted.

Here's a recording of the set for whoever wants it. Really great, pretty sure it's from the webcast.

Waited through Wild Flag, only to be packed in by teenage girls and their dudes, talking about when to pop their last adarol and drink the last of their booze. I circled back and got a great spot...Sorr for the shaky vids but the sound is really good i think.

Really Impressed with the vocals and his stage persona. For the biggest show he's ever done, I give him a ton of props. This might have been my most anticipated set and I was not disappointed although my wife was cause she went to a dead Gotye tent. Going to see him in Seattle on the 11th.

I watched him weekend 2 after making the mistake of attempting Gotye weekend 1 only to get pissed off by the crowd and wish that I had gone to the weeknd in the first place. Had a good spot in front of the soundboard so I was able to see/dance. He sounded great, solid set, although there were a few issues with his mic at times, but nothing major.

The crowd was pretty funny, There was one girl on the rail who got shown on the cameras quite a bit. She was crying hysterically through the whole set like he was Justin Bieber or something. And people had like neon granny panties they were attempting to get on stage with their phone numbers written on them. I'm glad I decided to stay back where I could chill and dance without having spazzy horny chicks freaking out over every song crowded around.
