Why? They were always known as a fairly good live act. The only differences that I'd expect from their old YouTube videos are:

Cedric probably won't climb or throw things, now.
They have different hair.
Cedric might put more effort into his live vocals than he used to.
Omar might put more effort into his instrumentals.
Jim will still be awesome.
Tony should be thrilled to be making money finally.
Something something Paul's bass skills.

Didn't 2-3 members of ATDI band perform together at Coachella in 2011?

Interesting way to promote a new Mars Volta album released 3 weeks prior to Coachella weekend #1.

At first I was convinced this was definitely a sell out move for these guys (and I still am), but I'm definitely excited to finally see them. Then after they get that out of their systems, The Mats Volta can get back to business.

Really? My ideal ATDI set would include that album in it's entirety.

The setlists from the tour before they broke up usually looked something like this:
Arcarsenal
Embroglio
Pattern Against User
Lopsided
Rascuache
Sleepwalk Capsules
One Armed Scissor
Metronome Arthritis
Cosmonaut
Invalid Litter Dept.
Chanbara
198D
Napoleon Solo
Catacombs

While I love the album as much as any other of their releases, I want them to play songs from all their albums and some of their EPs. I just fear that since relationship of command is their most popular album the set will be comprised mainly of songs from that. That set you posted is pretty good.

Phantasma Del Mar
01-17-2012, 04:57 PM
I can't really see them playing anything prior to In/Casino/Out to be honest...Not that there's anything wrong with that material, but Paul and Tony weren't on the first album or early EPs(they even did one without Jim), so I don't think they'd be too excited to be playing those songs during their reunion show.

As far as songs not on that setlist, I'd absolutely love to hear Hourglass.

GolfWang

I honestly couldn't care less if the only reason they reunited was for money. If money is the only thing getting them back together and playing songs then so be it.

Honestly i would have spent three hundred bucks for a ticket to see them live in another country... im just happy that they said yes to what ever amount that was agreed on to play as a band again.... relationship was the best for me but if the play songs from in casino out i would be very pleased with the set list.....

This reformation ( along with Refused ) was the impetus for my friends & I to make the journey from Australia . They actually pulled out of a tour just prior to playing my city when they last toured Oz so after that disappointment I was determined not to miss them this time !
Here's hoping it is worth all the expense ! I'm pretty sure I will have a blast either way...

Anything like that setlist would be good, as long as they play Napoleon Solo and Invalid Litter Dept. then I will be happy. I agree that anything before In/Casino/Out in unlikely, especially as Omar was the bassist on Acrobatic Tenement. He can get his bass fix with Le Butcherettes.

Why would they have different hair? They (O+C) let it get crazier during the TMV days of 2004-2006, but I expect it will be similar to the ATDI days. I hope Omar puts in no extra effort than he used to and that Cedric does still throw stuff about. Here's hoping as soon as they hit these tracks they regress 12 years to those days.

A lot of Omar's solo stuff live is fairly underwhelming, unless he's having a good day or you brace yourself. I have followed him to many concerts and felt the same, with the very huge exception of The Mars Volta pre-Amputechture. I think it's awesome he's back playing bass with a punk rock band, can't wait to see that.

I have seen At The Drive-In, Mars Volta and Sparta. Words cannot explain how excited I am that I will finally see ATD-I again. To me that was when they were at their best. They had the weird experimental jam feeling that was later developed more in The Mars Volta but they also had that we are here to rock your asses that was developed more in Sparta. For them to come back over a decade later and merge those sounds again is the real reason we are going to Coachella this year. I am also hopeful that they will come home and play a special show for us here, but I am not waiting around for that.

This and Refused are my most anticipated sets this year. I had the extreme pleasure of seeing At the Drive-in in Austin during my Texas years, and I am here to tell you that they will not disappoint. I know that my personal hopes are probably getting a bit out of control, but those of you that said that they aren't likely to play anything prior to In/Casino/Out are just straight up wrong. I would actually be very surprised if they didn't play Initiation. I'm also holding out hope for Starslight and Embroglio. I recognize that they're probably going to play a very Relationship heavy setlist, and I'm ok with that. I also know that their set is going to be probably 90 minutes tops.. and I can accept that as well. That having been said, I would expect them to slam through a lot of songs in that 90 minutes, and some of those are going to be for the hardcore fans.

Did they ever play 90 minutes even at stand alone gigs? I would bet they might not play for more than an hour...
If they play anything from Acrobatic, then Initiation is possible...I would still be surprised. Starslight or Embroglio would shock me, especially given the fact that Embroglio is about Julio Venegas and Omar and Cedric then wrote the entire Deloused In The Comatorium about him, hence I think maybe they wouldnt revisit Embroglio for personal reasons, as they are very personal guys. Or maybe I'm just talking shit as a similar argument could apply for them not playing Napoleon Solo, which they are clearly going to play

Was that rambling enough?

did they stop paying napoleon solo last during their last tour or something? every time i saw them (before relationship came out, never saw em after) they closed with napoleon solo. seeing a few setlist guesses with that not listed as the last song has me a bit confused. i thought they ALWAYS closed with that in tribute to their lost friends, just wondering if that changed.

also anyone else a little scared that their set could possibly end prematurely if brochella types start moshing, or are they over that now?

Phantasma Del Mar
01-25-2012, 08:09 PM
I was just basing it off of a bootleg DVD I have of them in Japan and Germany. It has been over 11 years, the setlist could be very different for all we know. Like I said earlier though, I would be VERY surprised if we got anything from Acrobatic Tenement. Not to say that I don't want to hear those songs, but Omar and Cedric's quotes throughout the years about a lot of their stuff sounding dated leaves me with the impression that they won't be busting out crazy early stuff.

Then again, they are reuniting, so I hope I'm wrong.

"We're not getting any younger and there's been an offer of money every year," he told NME. "You'd be a fool and a politician to pretend that wasn't part of it."

"Will there be a new album? No, no, no. At the Drive-In is more of a nostalgia thing-- it's songs we wrote when we were all in our 20s and we're doing a couple of shows"

"Obviously [the reunion] is going to be weird. It's like getting back with your ex-wife, only in this case there are four ex-wives!"

swdshfsk
02-22-2012, 12:39 PM
I just hope they don't give a lackluster performance. There are a number of bands who can get by on the music being front and center, even if the show if phoned-in. Not ATDI. It has to be balls-to-the-wall, otherwise I'll suspect money won out over nostalgia.

vulcandeathgrip
02-22-2012, 03:10 PM
Nostalgia or not you would have think that they are smart enough to realise that a luckluster show will tarnish their legacy. I am hoping like hell that they are mentally prepared to add to that legacy not detract from it. They are a huge part of the reason I am flying around the world for this festival so will more than a little bummed if the phone it in.

Guess what epic bros. They're not gonna be fuckin tame for this show. The Omar thing last year was his solo stuff which always has a super weird vibe. If you've gone to any TMV shows in recent history they've always unleashed the fury, and those songs simply do not have the same energy as ATD-I. Is it even possible to have a mellow ATD-I set? GTFO. I'm expecting Cedric to jump on shit and do his crazy dancey dance where he spins the microphone all over the place and I expect Omar to be a crazy man on the guitar.

I recently saw of Montreal at that venue (it's called Tricky Falls). I am from El Paso.

El Paso has this music festival that started last year, which Omar Rodriguez-Lopez headlined, and is happening this year, but ATDI aren't going to play it (Sparta is headlining). I think if they were going to play El Paso anytime soon, it would have been at the festival. They'll probably do their first show at Coachella.

ATDI's music is so unique - the blends of harmony and dissonance, and the rhythms - Mars Volta's catalogue doesn't hold a candle. So pumped for this, imagine it will be a slightly less crowded but equally epic version of RATM '07, minus the terrible political ramblings.

Yeah, I was more referring to the energy level, which was out of control in '07. I remember literally standing on other guys' feet, that shit was so crowded.

I am a little sad that I won't get to see their first reunion show - this 2nd weekend nonsense . . .

ATDI's music is so unique - the blends of harmony and dissonance, and the rhythms - Mars Volta's catalogue doesn't hold a candle. So pumped for this, imagine it will be a slightly less crowded but equally epic version of RATM '07, minus the terrible political ramblings.

Well, I feel that De-Loused in the Comatorium was the evolution of what ATDI did in Relationship of Command. I love those two albums.

But everything else that the Mars Volta did was not up to par with ATDI, although I feel it's not really fair to compare the two bands.

Why the hell would a bunch of guys not from TMV agree to rehearse and perform songs from that bands new album? And why the hell would a bunch of guys from TMV ask them too when they will be touring this record with that actual band in the near future? A bit counterproductive and a pretty silly rumor at that.

i saw them last night again and the energy is fine. omar does seem to just be going through the motions though but his playing is still spot on, he's just not throwing his guitar around like he does in tmv. cedric was climbing on things and doing his normal thing, but the venues were pretty small and there wasn't a lot of room to really move, so that might be why people think the energy is lower. i assure you it is not though. and cedric's voice is in top shape. my only concern with them playing coachella is that they might turn down the sound like they did during last year during dfa1979. this show needs to be loud or it's kind of a waste.

I was pretty annoyed by his lack of emotion during the show, but given that I just found out that his mom died, I'll withhold some judgment. While I'm sure that he would have been just as seemlingly-bored without that on his mind, death's hard, so I'll pretend that perhaps he had wanted to act like he cared otherwise.

yeah but i don't think he's that into this reunion very much mom dead or not. he said that the reunion is like putting on an old t-shirt that doesn't fit anymore. he's moved on and this is just a cash grab for him. cedric and jim seem to really be enjoying this though.

I've waited years to catch at the drive in live, and frankly I didn't think I ever would. Such a great show, awesome energy and seeing them live was a whole different experience than watching the recording of week 1. It's understandable from Omar's position. Not only did he play a bummed out show shortly after his mom passed, but he had to play TWO. Props to him though, he is still a great great great guitarist. We can't expect them to have the hyped sets they used to in back in the day. They're already established and matured now but I was super stoked to see Cedric still went after it and jumped off the drum set, and loved his crazy arm crawl maneuver.
I love this band and no matter how much energy the have or lack, the music is enough to get the party going. Only gripe is there were no acrobatic tenement songs. That album was so great!

They brought up during the set weekend 2 that they were one of the first bands to ever play Coachella, opening the mainstage in 1999 I believe is what he said. He thanked Goldenvoice sincerely. I enjoyed weekend 2's set a tad more than weekend 1 I think, and they seemed to try harder since their big reunion the weekend prior was forgotten after the Tupac hologram. I wish I could go back and watch it all over again.

I wish I could go back and watch it all over again.

This. I've been looking for the live stream cap from weekend one but all the links have been taken down :( Anyone come across anything?

Yeah, those groups were surprisingly rare. The second ATDI started playing I started scanning to find they fun people. I really could not believe how downer most of the crowd was.

I guess I got lucky and found myself in a good spot, because everyone was getting down and singing along to every song

did one of those people happen to be holding a coachella water bottle the whole time while rocking out?

I saw aTDI from afar, i was looking up at the stars while sitting under the little circle of lights (or whatever it is) take me to a universe far far away. They were fucking amazing!!! Quarantined was possibly my favorite song from their set

I was pretty much right up the front and while it was fun, I kind of wish I was a little bit further back so I could have enjoyed myself more rather than having to concentrate on staying on my feet. Regardless, it was the surreal seeing my favourite band ever after convincing myself I never would. My throat was dead from screaming every single lyric and my shirt was drenched in sweat. It was tops. After the set a dude must have seen how happy I was and said "how good was that?" I just replied that I can go die now.
P.S. Metronome and Catacombs were the extra songs they didn't play Weekend 1

My favorite set for sure!!! I went the second weekend. Glad we got to hear metronome arthritis and catacombs. Chanbara was probably my favorite song. Everybody around me were going nuts!!!! My voice was gone halfway through the set. I had a strange/cool experience with a girl, we were screaming lyrics in each others faces during sleepwalk capsules. I rocked my way away from her before I could high five her for her energy. If I made some kind of bucket list. Seeing ATDI would be on top. I can reasonably die young now.
