this a one off?
"As all this was brewing, Coachella got in touch. There were a couple of phone-calls, lots of skepticism, some hesitant enthusiasm before one of us basically said: "- This is ridiculous. There are friends of ours who would murder close relatives just to go see bands there. Let's just do it, one last time."

All the punk kids I know are bitching about how Refused have sold their souls and gone against everything they stand for by playing Coachella. Forgive me for failing to understand the complex capitalist dynamics of Goldenvoice, who they seemed to not have a problem with when they went to their Descendents/Bad Religion shows in December...

Hey, has anyone listened to their prior stuff? Turns out Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent doesn't have the genre experimentation, but it has the extended song structures, tight playing and intensity of the Shape of Punk to Come. In other words, it's spectacular and suddenly I want to hear them do older music.

Refused has a great "breakup" story, I'm more upset about them ruining that perfect ending to the story then I am about them "selling out", or w/e.

And by more upset, I mean not at all, because now I get to see fucking Refused.

In the process of dancing to a hardcore band, people get hit in various parts of their body, including the face. If you don't know this you didn't grow up into hardcore or punk, or you grew up in Burbank with suprefan and probably liked all that valley nonsense.

As for actually targeting anyone, I am trolling you assclowns to the max extent. I will be going apeshit and I hope everyone around me goes apeshit. Either way, when Refused plays, you'll either be having a great time with me or on serious bum out mode when I smash into you and break the molly's in your pocket. This is my only non-PLUR moment for the entire weekend, the rest of it I'll be melting on psychedelics and nice to everyone, don't ruin it by being a cheesedick hipster who's too cool to have fun.

vulcandeathgrip
01-18-2012, 04:11 PM
Believe me I grew up as far from Burbank as you can get & I have been into hardcore for over 20 years.
You can do what ever pleases you during their set, as long as you don't negatively effect my experience I couldn't give a fuck. If you feel that the most generic response to hardcore possible ( ie acting like a dick ) is what you want to do then go for it. I too will be doing my thing, which includes dancing but I also am enough of a nerd to actually want to see & observe the band.
Goodluck to you, I hope you manage to prove whatever it is you're trying to prove, I will be enjoying the experience in the way I choose. Should you "smash into " me whilst just having fun then I have no problem with that. If you are intentionally being a dick then I will have a problem with that.

anonimouse
01-18-2012, 05:18 PM
dancing/moshing is one thing. intentionally hurting people just to hurt them/earn +5 tough guy points is another. im going to go on thinking everyone here is of the former group :)

on that note please dear god dont put them on the main/outdoor stage! i dont see how this could work other than in the gobi/mojave. they'll pull a big group, hard to say how big but i cant imagine it would warrant use of one of the big stages. also i think most of us would probably agree that there would be a bit of a disconnect feeling seeing them on one of the bigger stages with all that space between them and the crowd and all of the people waiting for XXXXXXXX band to go on wondering "WHAT IS THIS LOUD ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC?! ITS JUST SCREAMING!!! AND THAT BEAT! UGH!!! WHEN DOES LAWRENCE WELK COME ON?!"

paul and crew know whats up, im sure they'll do the right thing when they start working on the schedule

Media Blitz
01-18-2012, 05:22 PM
Yeah, please no outdoor stage, and please no stage-closing set. Refused would be best at 7 PM on the Mojave or Gobi. Once you get into the 9-12 hours, the hardcore punk, heavy guitars, take-everything-seriously spirit won't work as well with everyone on drugs and looking for visual fun.

And I really don't want to miss Amon Tobin...

If you are new to Refused I hope you are as blown away with the whole package as I was when I discovered them. Yes David is a freakishly tight drummer ( my personal favorite examples of his dexterity are The Deadly Rhythm & the build up at the intro to Rather Be Dead. ) For me it so rare to come across a band like this that ticks all my boxes - musically groundbreaking with out regard to genre, lyrics that are meaningful & thought provoking all wrapped in an ethos that I respect & appreciate. For me they come as close to satisfying what I look for in a band as anyone since Fugazi.

When I think actually getting to witness them live I get all tingly and shit...

Looks incredible. Add Pretty Face to that and it has all my favorites. Now my only concern is going too hard for this set on Friday and hurting for the rest of the weekend.

i hear ya. i was determined to get tickets to the show at the glasshouse but im starting to reconsider. im sure its gonna be an epic show but with the next day being first day of coachella and living an hour+ away from the glasshouse it might just be too much. besides i can just wait one more day to see em at my favorite venue in the world

also i figure that maybe by me not going to the glasshouse show some other kid who isnt going to coachella might get that ticket instead. i know kinda lame but hey who knows

Is this the thread we're supposed to bump for Refused reviews at Coachella? Hard to tell with all the damn random threads people are pumping out today. Stop it!

This was easily the best show I saw on Friday and it wasn't all that close (although Pulp sure are fuking magnificent). I wasn't sure going in what to expect but that quickly changed once they hit the stage. It was like a bomb going off! I was center pit and made it about three songs in before taking a sneaker to the jaw. I slowly moved... err, was violently pushed to the outside closer to rail but still only few feet from stage. Sore today!

Dennis Lyxzén is a revelation! Holy crap this guy should be a freakin household name! He reminded me of a young Iggy Pop in some ways, at least how he moved. He is still capable of doing all the leaps, twists and shrieks I thought I'd never get a chance to experience live. I was blown away by his and Jon Brännström's energy- nice suit! The songs sounded tight and the rest of the band pounded away like they had never been gone.

Coachella crowd: although I gotta question where some of you learned to crowd surf--the objective is not always "hurt someone by kicking as hard as I can"-- major props for showing up in force and giving back all the energy Refused were putting out. A special shout out to the 100 lbs gal who said "Hey guys... heads up!"- just before she lept off the side railing right on top of me! That was pretty damn awesome, actually. Cute girls surfing usually is. But the dude who kicked me on the jaw? Not so fine.

Great time all in all! And it's going to be almost impossible to top it the rest of this weekend!

^They were HUGE. When the sound bleed from SHM started, internally i groaned; but Refused took it up a notch and made the show a bit better. i'll be there next week. Seeing them again is mandatory.

I am usually disappointed in reformed bands at festivals, but Refused were really great and that is considering I saw them a few times in the 90's. On some levels their performance at Coachella was the best I have seen them play.

they were amazing and they looked so grateful to be there. dennis was so sincere. i brought a friend not too familiar with them and he was going to stay for just a few songs. wound up being a convert and staying the whole set

i'm curious did they play any festival shows back in the day? im guessing this was probably the biggest audience they've ever played for in the USA, wondering if it's possibly their biggest show ever. either way for such a large crowd they made it feel pretty intimate

I believe that most of their US shows in the day were house shows so I'd guess that this is the biggest show they've done.

I have a decently HQ video of New Noise if anyone's interested. Had my freezing cold girlfriend stick around and record it for me as I raged. Amazing performance. So glad we stuck through the cold to watch them.

i had 3 people seemingly fall from the sky & knock me down as soon as thousands of people yelled "can i scream!"

That moment, it seemed like the crowd got jolted with electricity, b/c everyone was off the ground or in motion. The people in front of me were airborne, like a big wave. I won't forget that moment.

like stinkbutt said they just went into it after new noise. ***ZOMG SPOILER ALERT*** if you mean specifics like was a person playing violin with them, no. the intro was samples but it didnt matter. and right before the "alive, living, loving and searching" part dennis omitted the "spoken word" part /***ZOMG SPOILER ALERT*** again it didnt matter and i still cried like a lil kid at the end of the set.

I thought this too, but after Refused you won't even care about a fairly boring light show

truth. amon was on my list as well but after seeing refused i was like fuck it, im done. nothing could touch what i just saw. i will make more effort to catch him this weekend but i'll still likely watch the whole refused set and anyone dealing with conflicts should do the same

FUCK this hurts a bit more than i thought it would but thanks

dude its fucking refused. how many chances have you had to see them in the last 10-15 years? how many chances do you think you'll have to see them in the future?

if any set this weekend deserves the much overused "they killed it" tag, it was refused

Looks like they are breaking up again. I'm sad but at the same time they accomplished what they set out to do in the first place, so I am really happy for them. They were one of the best acts at Coachella, and probably one of the most fun/energetic bands I've ever seen. Going out on a high note for sure.

not surprised. they've been so amazing live that i know quite a few people are wanting new material, but seeing as how "shape" is 14 years old and all that they've gone through in the meantime as individuals, it would be really REALLY hard for them to put out a follow up that could touch it. maybe they could but we'll never know and im okay with that. getting to see a band i never thought id ever see live once (let alone four times!) has been a dream come true

i still cant believe how good these refused shows have been, it really is like they never broke up. they are just soooo tight live its amazing they've not played together in 14 years. anyone else going to the fonda tomorrow for the last show?

and i hear what you're saying about ATDI. while i wasnt THAT disappointed in their reunion it did feel like it was lacking something. probably all the energy that omar and cedric used to throw all over the stage. its unrealistic to expect cedric still be able to hit some of the high notes and dance like a fucking madman as he did when he was 20ish, but having only known the band in that regard, yea it was a bit of a letdown i guess. still glad it happened though and i still get pretty happy watching the replays

Well that's true as well, he basically came out and said he was in it for the money. I was just pointing out an additional reason for his lack of dancing.

I saw ATDI here in the hometown of El Paso and it was fucking great, super glad I saw them both hometown and in a small packed venue than at a huge festival.

Feel bad for the other shows though, they definitly had less energy and a different vibe, Omar still wasn't energetic but the band played insanely well and Cedric hit those notes.

Bummed I'll never see Refused, FFF was my last chance and school had me all fucked up.
