"gonna be honest with you" When someone says this, they imply they are not honest with you other times and they need to clarify the statement they are currently making is not a pack of lies like the previous ones. Especially hate hearing this from people i don't really know at all.

"Frankly" or "to be frank" is much the same. "I was just being coy with you before."

In context it really means "frank" but it's a less irritating and ugly way to say it. It's just a cushion in advance of a potentially unwelcome opinion, generally stated for the recipient's benefit. I fully support its continued usage to be honest.

EDIT: dammit Tom was already being honest with you. didn't read far enough
but frankly I feel removing my comment completely is somehow dishonest

Says the sound guy for grammy nominated recordings. I'm just a simple guy.

I'm thinking of radio hosts acting the music critic who say things like "Sonically the new Bon Iver album is ..." or "The sonics didn't work for me but ..." Is it meant to distinguish tone from rhythm or lyrics or something?

Drinkey McDrinkerstein
01-04-2012, 09:40 PM
No, it literally means sound.

EDIT: "sonics" isn't actually a word though.

EDIT AGAIN: it's describing waves, technically, but saying that something is sonically this or that is just a nice way of describing the sound. Saying "the sonics didn't work for me" does sound like someone doesn't know what they're talking about.
