These are all CD's I copied from my pop. He's always been a big influence on the music I listen to and I admire him for still seeking new music and not just listening to music from his generation. In any case:
John Mayall-Turning Point & Jazz Blues Fusion
Los Lobos- Kiko
Willie Nelson-Greatest Hits
Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris-All the Roadrunning
Crosby Still and Nash-Self Titled
other shit I recently got:
Elvis Costello-This Year's Model

Van Halen-Fair Warning, Women and Children First
Camper Van Beethoven- Key Lime Pie
The Rapture- Echoes

I only buy jazz on vinyl now but this is proving hard when collecting all the Miles Davis releases and such. Any suggestions as to how to go about this?

sydaud
04-09-2007, 01:15 PM
Record shows. I was always very wary of buying vinyl on-line. When I collected vinyl (up until last year) I had the good fortune of knowing a couple of guys that "travelled the circuit" and they would let me know about such things. In general, the giants (Davis, Coltrane, Mingus, Ellington etc..) are relatively easy to find on viny with reissues pricing around $4-$10 per album.

That being said, a lot of the jazz labels have done fantastic work with their reissues and liner notes. I know there is a certain asthetic to jazz on vinyl and I know the bottom end is represented better as well, but unless you're just a vinyl collector in general, I would suggest that you save some money and buy the music in CD form (UNLESS, you have a taste for pre-1950 live perfomances....the hunt the shows and have fun!).

I do not and I've not heard it. It is my plan to collect them all; I just almost never see them used. And the list of CDs that I want is ridiculous.

Magnolia Electric Co. - Sojourner

I stopped at Stinkweeds this evening and picked this up. I like the wood box. I listened to the Shohola disc and oh my I love it to death. This is the one Jason recorded at home that is only him with a guitar.

I think I'm allowed to count these as separate albums? If so I'm guessing that one is a 8.5+ while The Black Ram and Nashville Moon are around 7s.

Also it is my goal to one day wear an outfit with which I can reasonably wear that medallion.

- Geogaddi: picked it up per hype on this board; my first BoC experience.
- In Rainbows: 42 minutes? I guess Amnesiac was that short but it went along with Kid A's release. Not disappointed, just surprised.
- V is for Vagina: I saw it in the new releases and decided to check it out. Not bad, I was expecting more Maynard-y vocals, but not great either.

I think I picked up Overseer's Wreckage a few weeks ago but haven't given it much time.

It can be a pain sometimes (the software is pretty hit and miss), but I think so. I am on an old plan that I carried over, so I pay $19.99 for 90 downloads. I end up being able to download 8-10 albums a month, so it definitely is worth it to me. You shouldn't expect to download much mainstream stuff, but you can find a lot of fantastic albums on the site. I'd browse around to make sure there is enough on there for you.

It ends up paying for itself pretty quickly. For instance, I had tried to purchase Fila Brazillia and Baby Mammoth albums for years, but they run for $25+ each on any retail site. They have almost their entire catalogs on eMusic, and I was able to grab about 12 CD's worth of their music for 1 month's share and part of a 2nd month's.

Sushov23

The current rates are:

eMusic Basic

* 30 Song Downloads per month
* $9.99 per month

eMusic Plus

* 50 Song Downloads per month
* $14.99 per month

eMusic Premium

* 75 Song Downloads per month
* $19.99 per month

If you want to give it a try, let me know. I can send you a referral that will give you 50 free downloads (and I will get 50 free as well!).

Sushov, if you need another testimonial, I'll back up Luckyface on emusic's quality. I think they've got an incredibly deep catalog. Just when I think I've found everything on there I'd ever want, I stumble across something else. I've been a member for a couple years, and have actually bumped up my subscription to 200 downloads a month. They're missing some key independent labels (Sub Pop, for one), but the site is tough to beat for quality and value. Do it.

emusic is pretty awesome. however, eventually it or itunes is going to have to follow suit with Zune and offer unlimited downloads for a set rate (20-25 seems reasonable to me). Itunes has been trying to do this (and allow you to keep the songs afterwards, unlike Zune) and it's the way to go. I'll start paying for all of my MP3s again if that's the case. Right now I buy about 10% of my music on LP, maybe another 20% on emusic. and the rest for free (largely because it's stuff I only want to listen to on a rare occasion). A reasonable unlimited download service would change that.

Went to Target today to finally pick up Cat Power's Jukebox. Also found Sia's some people have REAL problems and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon for $10 apiece and couldn't resist the bargain. $10 for a CD is about the only amount I'm willing to pay for a CD nowadays. Anything more and it better be for an artist I'm absolutely in love with (such as Portishead's Third and... well, that's the only example from this year).

I wonder why Amoeba didn't have a single copy of The Knife - Silent Shout

I need to get the one with the dvd.

Anyway, has anyone here happened to have seen a Pulp album on vinyl anywhere in the LA area lately? I talked to some people at Amoeba and they said nothing has come in recently, but when it does, it goes quick, and, no, they won't put aside anything for anyone except friends.

I wish I wasn't so obsessed with opening everything and looking at the artwork and such. I just saw a sealed vinyl copy of A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms for over $200 on ebay. I got mine at amoeba over 5 years ago for $15. I didn't have a record player in California at the time and when I finally got one, I was tired of the album, so I have never listened to it on vinyl, yet it's open, lulz.

Apparently Muse - Absolution is expensive on vinyl now. Mine is opened, but signed.

Pioneering U.K. label Ninja Tune has never rested on its laurels, despite introducing to the world name-brand dance acts like Mr. Scruff, Kid Koala, Cinematic Orchestra, and Roots Manuva. Those acts, plus some 30 others, comprise the forthcoming 50-track three-disc collection, You Don’t Know: Ninja Cuts, available on our shores June 10.

The fifth Ninja Cuts collection in the label’s illustrious 18-year history, the collection features nine unreleased tunes by Coldcut, the aforementioned Mr. Scruff, alongside new names on the roster, such as Baltimore’s The Death Set, Montreal’s Ghislain Porier, and London’s The Bug. Styles from hip-hop and turntablism to downtempo and experimental indie-rock showcase a label known for its consistency and reliable output. And the name is fitting. After all, most know Ninja for artists like Amon Tobin or Bonobo. But Wiley, Durrty Goodz, and The Long Lost? That’s just Ninja being Ninja–hard to categorize, but dope.

I traded in a bunch of my DVDs, which I've been digitizing... I'm not keeping physical copies of some of the films I'm not that interested in any more...

So I got these LPs:
Yellow Swans - Demos (press of 500)
Belong - Colorless Record (St. Ives press of 300, each one handmade by the artists and really fucking gorgeous)
DNA - On DNA (press of 2000)
Lithops - Mound Magnet
Fennesz - Black Sea

I also got the Campfire Songs CD by Animal Collective (went out of print recently, and I never grabbed it)...

DNA on DNA is only 2000 press? I bought that about 4 years ago, and I still see them around. Poor DNA, nobody wants their music I guess.

according to the sticker on my 2LP copy... only 2000.

That record is so fucking good, it has everything

I don't normally do that... I just got excited because I picked up the Belong and Yellow Swans used and was digging around for more info (particularly on the yellow swans record, which I hadn't heard before).

Hahaha, that is a lot of the stuff I bought the past two years. Goldfrapp and Interpol were new. Pretty good haul.

I'm going to Amoeba tonight to make unintelligent financial decisions with Christmas right around the corner. I will report back later.

I then went to Amoeba to finish my Xmas shopping. Apparently there's a new Buddha Machine, with more loops and a pitch shifter. it's pretty great.

I made some poor financial decisions today because I hadn't been record shopping in a couple of months. So what if Christmas is around the corner!

The Cure - The Only One (7")
Mott the Hoople - Mott
No Age - Teen Creeps (7")
The Rain Parade - Live in Japan
Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It
XTC - The Black Sea

CD's:

The Replacements - Let It Be
Wipers - Wipers Box Set
XTC - Apple Box

DVD's:

The Complete Jam

Misc:

Buddha Machine II

Oh, and I got the following from the No Age/Titus Andronicus show, as well as work:

LP's:

No Age - Eraser (7")
Titus Andronicus - The Airing of Grievances

CD's:

Tom Petty - Highway Companion
The Replacements - Don't Tell a Soul

That's a fantastic haul, but I'd like to know if you've sat down with the 2 Replacement's CD's you bought or if you were already familiar with them? They're certainly more "mature" than their previous releases.

Black Sea is my all-time favorite XTC release. I guess the new version of the CD adds like 3 or four songs.

And Sugar Mountain is quite good, but I don't know if it's as good as Massey Hall...strong score on the Mott as well. You're making me feel as though I need to go make some ill-advised purchases as well!

I am going to listen to those Replacements records when I drive home in a couple of days. I have only read about them. I got them through work, so if I dislike them (which won't happen...even a not great Replacements record won't suck), they were free.

Went to Rasputin yesterday.

LPs:

Beachwood Sparks - Beachwood Sparks
Big Country - The Crossing
Compilation - Doo Wop Rock
Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story

As are Big Country. I found that same album, still shrinkwrapped, for $1.90. There is clearly not enough appreciation for guitars that sound like bagpipes.

Had to sell some CDs at Rasputin today. Used the proceeds to buy:

LPs:

Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
Von Bondies - Lack of Communication

CDs:

Starling Electric - Clouded Staircase

Say what you want about the Von Bondies, but Lack of Communication rocks very hard.
