How does Mumford and Sons get nominated for best new artist last year and album of year this year for the same album that came out in 2009?

Is it because it didn't chart well until this year?

The Cave got put out as a single last year, so they used that loophole to keep em in there. Also, people responded well to their performance last year so they are just trying to find the feel good bullshit to shove down peoples throats.

How did they miss the memo on MBDTF as AOTY?

The recording academy still thinks the taylor swift shit is grounds for not getting the nomination.

The recording academy still thinks the taylor swift shit is grounds for not getting the nomination.

I hope you're just joking around with that, but if you aren't thats ridiculous. That album is amazing and it should get that type of recognition. Taylor Swift could care less now I'm sure...

Miroir Noir
11-30-2011, 07:57 PM
I'm not even making the case for MBDTF on grounds of artistic merit; I'm simply surprised that the suits who run this thing would ignore the massive critical and commercial consenus behind it. The Taylor Swift thing is as good of an explanation as anything.

Seriously! It's absolutely ridiculous how great that album is, and how completely forgettable the actual noms are. Ridiculous.

What was weird about Robyn is they nominated her for Body Talk, Part 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_Talk_Pt._3), which to the best of my knowledge, was a download-only comp of the remaining tracks from Body Talk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_Talk_(Robyn_album)) (the album I think they intended to nominate) that hadn't previously appeared on Body Talk, Part 1 or Body Talk, Part 2.

Totally agree Boourns. Looking at this list has reminded me what a joke of world we live in. Sad.

People pretend not to care about grammy because they feel the grammys never go to the most deserving artist. This is no different. Just because an overrated indie rock band (Foster the shit or whatever shitty band) win doesn't mean the "right" artist won.

No, no. No. NO!

It seems like yesterday
But it was long ago
Some band was lovely, it was the king of my night
There in the darkness with the radio playing low
And the secrets that we shared
The mountains that we moved
Caught like a wildfire out of control
'Til there was nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove
And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh so tight
Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then

Against the wind
We were runnin' against the wind

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5291/5509363789_03a2fcd9aa_b.jpg

We were young and strong, we were runnin'
Against the wind

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5291/5509363789_03a2fcd9aa_b.jpg

The years rolled slowly past
And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5291/5509363789_03a2fcd9aa_b.jpg

I found myself further and further from my home

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5291/5509363789_03a2fcd9aa_b.jpg

And I guess I lost my way
There were oh so many roads
I was living to run and running to live

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5291/5509363789_03a2fcd9aa_b.jpg

Never worryied about paying or even how much I owed
Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time
Breaking all of the rules that would bend
I began to find myself searching
Searching for shelter again and again

Against the wind
A little something against the wind
I found myself seeking shelter sgainst the wind

Well those drifter's days are past me now
I've got so much more to think about
Deadlines and commitments
What to leave in, what to leave out

Against the wind
I'm still runnin' against the wind

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5291/5509363789_03a2fcd9aa_b.jpg

People pretend not to care about grammy because they feel the grammys never go to the most deserving artist. This is no different. Just because an overrated indie rock band (Foster the shit or whatever shitty band) win doesn't mean the "right" artist won.

The bigger issue here to me is awarding something as "best" when art is completely objective. Same goes for the Oscars.

From MTV (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1675219/grammy-nominees-numbers.jhtml):

Yes, there were some surprises, such as Justin Vernon's sedate folkie solo project Bon Iver snagging four nominations

MTV also did some cute things with numbers - this was my favorite:

15: Number of instruments Vernon is credited with playing on the album.

6: Total number of instruments played by the other Best New Artist nominees (Skrillex, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole) on their albums, all of which go to country trio the Band Perry.

Oh dear LORDDDDDDD this is incredible.

Yes, especially when you consider what an amazing year 1980 was in music. No I don't expect the mainstream hollywood pop world to be living on the cutting edge, but this just embarassing. Christopher Cross and Kenny Loggins in a year that saw the release of London Calling, Remain in Light, Second Edition, Pretenders, Get Happy!!, Dirty Mind, Entertainment!, etc etc.

The fact that they have a best dance/electronica "album" with nominees like deadmau5 and skrillex is yet more evidence of how out of touch the Grammy's are.

Most EDM producer albums are just a repackaging of single releases in an attempt to squeeze a couple more dollars out of them.

-Best Dance Recording
-Best Dance/Electronica Album

Yes we know, we get it, the Grammys are out of touch with music. It's been that way for a long long time. When will some of you just start pretending that it doesn't exist? Who. Cares.

I dont quite know what constitutes an "Alternative" album anymore, but Bon Iver, Bon Iver is the best out of that bunch if I had to pick. It'd be a different story if the other 5 tracks from KoL were a part of that record.

But really, these arn't the "Spooks jerks off to this music while walking around NYC awards", which would be equally as irrelevant as the Grammys are.

Etta James and Don Cornelius omitted from the memorial?

That Adele is being praised so much because she can actually sing says more about our declining standards for pop singers than it says for Adele.

She deserves all the praise she is getting, regardless of the lack of talent in her peers.

Lol, this board cracks me up. Such snobs. You'd think people who love music so much would at least respect a lot of these artists, even if they don't make the kind of music you like.

Being upset about Skrillex winning a Grammy award would mean that I acknowledge the Grammy committee as a credible source for my taste in music. They are only a show to watch on a lazy Sunday night.

Who was Bon Iver going to collaborate with? Skrillex?

Justin and Co could have done some justice to a Beach Boys track.

I'm pretty sure "Rolling in the Deep" is a metaphor for sexual intercourse. Like,

"Hey bro, did you fuck that girl last night?"

"Oh dude, after she had a few drinks I was rolling in the fucking DEEP!"

fatbastard

I'd like to roll in deep with Adele.
