got a great tip from IGN just a few minutes ago. there is a real quick way to raise your smithing to 100 in a few minutes. once you have a couple thousand gold go to a blacksmith and buy all of his iron ingots and all of his leather strips. then go to the forge and craft some iron daggers. make as many as you need and it'll start flying through levels. i just did it and flew from 60 to 75 in about 10 minutes.

This paid off.

So I go to my property in Whiterun, and Faendal, whom I defaced in one of the early quests, attacks me. I kill him in front of my wife (Camilla, the girl that he ordered me to convince to like him), and then she starts attacking me! Smashed her easily with my fist, but unfortunately it seems I can't remarry. Oh well, I'm missing that free gold she gave me each day..

Three corpses?

I bought the house in Whiterun and decorated all the rooms. I usually just use to drop crap off into containers. It's also nice to visit Lydia from time to time. I don't let her go on any adventures. When I first got the house, she just walked around the area outside her little room. Now, she spends all her time sitting at the little table in my room, eating bread and drinking. Oh, Lydia... I wish I had the option of telling her to go out and talk to that blacksmith girl at the place next-door every now and then. She's going to get fat just sitting around all day. But I know if I take her with me, she's going to die, and it's probably going to be because I dragon shouted her off some mountain.

Edit: Oh, and one time, she met me at the top of the stairs and said, "I'm glad we're friends," and she gave me an axe. Maybe the axe she would have used if I let her go on adventures. I didn't realize that was her way of telling me, "I guess I don't need this. I'm going to eat bread in your room."

It would be nice if NPCs would not get in my way when they're joining me on adventures.

I mean, you'd think that having two thieves in my party, they would be smart enough to stay the fuck back and attack from the shadows... but no, those bitches ran right out and started slashing shit when we could have just sat back and let those muthafuckas freak the fuck out cause they didn't know where they were being killed from.

And of course due to the nature of the quest I couldn't just tell them to wait for me somewhere while I ran ahead and sniped the shit out of everyone.

While I totally agree with the sentiment, it can have some pretty hilarious consequences...

I was coming back from the first Companions quest with Varkas and decided to kill some Giants outside Whiterun, forgetting that Varkas was still with me. As I maged them from behind cover, Varkas repeatedly rushed in, each time getting sent to the heavens with one hit. I couldn't stop laughing.

Save often.

In Solitude. Go to the Blue Palace and listen to a conversation. There will be a guy telling the jarl about some mysterious stuff happening around a cave. That starts off this unrelated quest that will get you friendly with the Solitude jarl and her people. It might be unnecessary, but it helped because I got to ask the jarl's right-hand man for a favor that aided me in the actual Sheogorath quest.

My favorite enemy to take on with the bow is those old Nord zombies that sleep in tombs. I like the ones that are sitting in chairs, or standing in nooks, or sleeping in those shelf-coffins. I know that they'll wake up and attack me if I move past a certain point, or pull a lever, or take some item... so I sneak up to them and shoot an arrow into their brain. So easy, yet so satisfying.

Search the wolves and you should get a pelt or a hide. At a blacksmith's gaff, in a town or sometimes a farm, you'll find a skinning frame which you can use to turn that into leather. Then you use the leather at a forge to make leather or hide armour, or as a component in something more sophisticated.

Leatherworking, because leather is a fairly plentiful and self-sustaining resource, is a good way to get in your smithing practice and level up a bit.

They won't follow you into places they can't fit. Find a cave or tent and pew pew.

just got my invincible talking dog via IGN's tip below:

Go to Falkreath and find the smith called Lod. He will ask you to find his dog. You can find the dog Barbas outside of the village and it will take you to the Shrine of Clavicus Vile. Once you speak with the Daedra Lord, the dog will accompany you until you finish the A Daedra's Best Friend quest. The dog is technically a quest item and so can't be destroyed. It will automatically attack enemies who approach you and since he can't lose any health, he is THE BEST TANK EVER. Note: you may take another companion in addition to the dog.

I am not sure what I'm doing in this game so far but I like it.
I played for at least 10 hours before finding a horse to ride. I bought one and it got killed a few minutes later by a giant saber tooth tiger.
I'm also a vampire, somehow. How did that happen?
Is that why people keep telling me I look sickly (in the game)?

This is usually just an indicator that you haven't slept in a while. When you sleep you get bonuses in leveling.

As for the vampire there's a few ways to cure that, one might be in this thread but they're definitely on the Internet already.

What stage are you? Just feed on someone who is sleeping (just to make sure you're not stage 4, people will attack on sight at that point), then go to Morthal and speak to Falion. He'll explain the rest for you.

If you're unsure on how to feed, just hit x (a,right click, etc) when it says "pickpocket". There will then be a little menu that asks if you wanna feed on them before taking all of their belongings.

It's kind of before the Blue Palace, where the Solitude yarl is. On the right, if you are heading toward the Blue Palace. There is a small set of steps that go up onto a porch-type thing, and you'll probably see some bards playing their instruments. It's the building that they are opposite of.

Oblivion gates?

nathanfairchild
11-17-2011, 01:25 PM
they are gates that pop up all around the world that are portals to the plane of oblivion. oblivion is this hell-looking wasteland (rivers and lakes of fire, red sky, demons) and you have to activate this stone to close the portal that is at the top of a tower. you have to go through these caverns for some which were a pain in the ass, also the gates were unavoidable since the whole main quest focused around them. i think the total number of gate that you were required to close was 10.

I'll never forget the maddening hell (pun intended) of getting REALLY fucking baked one day right before playing Oblivion. Usually, that was a fantastic idea, but that day, I stepped into a Gate (not for the first time mind you) and wandered around for what seemed like HOURS, unable to find my way to the top of whatever tower. I'm sure I didn't play the game for multiple hours in that gate, but regardless, it was confusing, disorientating, frustrating, and all that jazz. I mean, I got really really high, so that was undoubtedly the reason for my lack of direction, but still.

I love archery because you can distract, fire, then sneak back into the shadows and they will never find you.

I use both depending on the difficulty of the mob. If they're easy, I'll take them out quickly with arrows. If they've got more health, I'll use a dagger and backstab them. The 15x bonus damage for sneak attacks with a dagger combined with my dagger's 25% bonus chance for critical hits means I can sneak around and generally kill someone by hitting them once or twice before they notice me. Whereas with archery only giving me a 3x sneak bonus, it usually takes a lot more time to do the whole shoot someone, duck in the shadows, wait for them to stop looking for me, repeat until dead thing.

My unemployed roommate is also playing the game and he is obviously a lot further than I am so I know that shouts play a major role and I am looking forward to using them. However, I am also looking forward to becoming the leader of the Dark Brotherhood. This game is uncut, 100% pure cocaine.

The $28 strategy guide is the best purchase I've made this year, well... besides Skyrim of course. It has helped me out soooooo much and is definetly worth the money. Highly recommended.

I always have such a negative opinion toward strategy books. They always seem like a way of cheating to me and make the game less fun. Plus, instead of spending 1034 hours playing the game I'd spend considerably less time with a strategy book; and less time in skyrim is a bad thing.

Don't get me wrong, I typically never use strategy guides nor the internet to help me out unless I'm completely stuck but this game is different for me. If I need to find a certain kind of flower, fuck wandering all over the giant world in hope of finding it, I'm looking that shit up. Plus if I wander into a dungeon I usually glance over it in the book to make sure I don't need a quest beforehand since I completely fucked up the Companions questline by not doing that. I'm all for keeping the surprises to be discovered but I really don't wanna ruin things either and it's very easy to do so in this game. I wanna have the most fun I can get out of this game and don't want feel cheated because I cleared a place I shouldn't have done yet.

That's why you never attack anyone that doesn't attack you first.

So I should never wander into dungeons that have no guards at the entrance? There are a lot that don't have quests attached to them.

My speech says Level 36 but the "36" is green. None of the other skill #'s are green.
What does this mean?

No, still go into caves, dungeons and forts, but if the people there don't attack you then don't attack them.

I think you're ok with Bandits.

I'm doing the guerrilla warfare esque mission in Broken Oar Grotto currently. It's taking me forever to kill Captain Hargar... but it will be worth it.

A little tip some of you may not know. If your like me you use your follower to carry a lot of items. He/she may become full of inventory space, all you have to do is drop the items on the floor and tell them to pick it up using the I need you to do something command. They will always pick it up even if they are full.

This is something I've been wrestling with myself.

Also the courtship process in this game is amusing.

Got a house in Riften. Walked in and there was my new housecarl sitting there. Whom I don't believe I've had any contact with before (maybe I did and just didn't remember?). First words out of her mouth? "Oh you're wearing an amulet of mara... wanna hook up?"

Although I do also enjoy that after getting married you can pretty much be all "Bitch, make me a sammich"...

I'm thinking about picking one up. I haven't used magic/alchemy once. Don't know how to do any of that shit.

Go to menu, click magicka (left) and look at your spells -- obviously you can equip a given spell but you can also make it easily accessible by putting it on your 'favorites' menu (for potions/spells/apparel/weapons etc.), it saves you the hassle of having to go back and forth to the regular menu during battle.

You acquire different spells by reading the specified books (remember, go to the magicka menu to equip or 'favorite' them) which you can buy, find or streal -- although you don't have to necessarily steal/buy a book to learn the spell (but you can always sell the book when you're done with it).

Lastly, use your spells (esp. Restoration, Destruction) -- it's the only way you effectively bolster your magicka.

Don't do this with stacks. I just turned 45 dwarven ingots into 1.

So far the Stromcloaks seem like incredible dicks, but so does most of the people in Skyrim.

My proposal to Sylgja was on the same day I recieved the 'mysterious letter' from the Dark Brotherhood; the drama.

After exploring through Whiterun hold and most (with the exception of Winterhold) of the Stormcloaks' 'territory' I have decided this time around that I will draw my sword in the name of the empire -- I've heard Ulfric's side of the story and that guy is a shady vato.

I still have yet to meet up the wise men (though I've picked up yet another quest that takes me up there; taking supplies up to them) but I'll finally start heading toward Falkreath-->Markarth-->Solitude just to put everything on the map (priority one) if nothing else.

But before that I think I might just sneak up around toward Winterhold, whilst completing some Dark Brotherhood/Thieves Guild quests, just so I can go to the college and find out more about stuff like enchanting.

Fuck, level 31 and there's still too much to do.
