"I am an international leader, the dean of the Arab rulers, the king of kings of Africa and the imam of Muslims, and my international status does not allow me to descend to a lower level."
— Remarks to a crowd including King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and having his microphone cut on March 30, 2009, as quoted by The Scotsman in the article "Gaddafi walks out of summit after attack on Saudi king" by Salah Nasrawi.

"There is no state with a democracy except Libya on the whole planet."
— Spoken at a conference at Columbia University in New York City on March 23, 2008.

"I am convinced that the [Israel-Palestine] solution is to establish a democratic state for the Jews and the Palestinians, a state that will be called Palestine, Isratine, or whatever they want. This is the fundamental solution, or else the Jews will be annihilated in the future, because the Palestinians have [strategic] depth."
— Interview with Al Jazeera, March 27, 2007

"If a community of people wears white on a mournful occasion and another dresses in black, then one community would like white and dislike black and the other would like black and dislike white. Moreover, this attitude leaves a physical effect on the cells as well as on the genes in the body."
— Excerpt from "The Green Book" (1975)

"[Abraham] Lincoln was a man who created himself from nothing without any help from outside or other people. I followed his struggles. I see certain similarities between him and me."
— Pulbished in The Pittsburgh Press on August 3, 1986, in the article "Gadhafi, the man the world loves to hate" by Marie Colvin.

"Irrespective of the conflict with America, it is a human duty to show sympathy with the American people and be with them at these horrifying and awesome events which are bound to awaken human conscience. When I was five, my brother was shot by an Israeli soldier, since then I have been dedicated to uniting the Arab countries throughout the Middle East and retain a trade flow with the West."
— Reaction to the September 11, 2001, attacks as quoted by CBSNews.com on September 12, 2001.

"All right, then nobody can complain if we ask pregnant women to make parachute jumps."
— Defending his belief that women's "defects" meant that their place was in the home as quoted by TIME on July 23, 1975.

"Libya is an African country. May Allah help the Arabs and keep them away from us. We don't want anything to do with them. They did not fight with us against the Italians, and they did not fight with us against the Americans. They did not lift the sanctions and siege from us. On the contrary, they gloated at us, and benefited from our hardship…"
— Interview with Al Jazeera, March 27, 2007

"There is a conspiracy to control Libyan oil and to control Libyan land, to colonise Libya once again. This is impossible, impossible. We will fight until the last man and last woman to defend Libya from east to west, north to south."
— audio message broadcast on Al-Ouroba TV, a Syria-based satellite station, on August 25, as oppostion forces began as assault on Tripoli.

They were only responsible for about 1% of global oil production, but oil has extremely inelastic demand (double the price for instance, and demand only goes down a few percent. People will basically pay anything for it.) So a small drop in supply resulted in a disproportionate increase in oil prices.

I think most of the price increase disappeared over the last few months though, as the situation stabilized and production restarted.

Only if we invaded one of those evil countries that cruelly control the supply of oil and to whom the US is dependent on for oil imports...like Canada or Mexico.

Wow. I'll be very interested to read a more fully reported account of how this all went down.

The story that seems to be circulating is essentially this:

Gadhafi's hometown surrounded which is last major area with Gadhafi supporters. Rebels notice suspicious convoy next to animal feed warehouse. Rebels approach suspicious convoy. Rebels are shot at. Rebels engage in a 30-45min gunfight and essentially are victorious. Rebels find an injured Gadhafi in a drainage tunnel of sorts after he was able to escape gunfight but not without sustaining some serious wounds. Rebels kill Gadhafi in daylight or let him die due to existing wounds after dragging him out of drainage tunnel. Videos and pictures appear as they drag his lifeless body around cheering.

The only part that isn't really certain is whether or not he just happened to crawl back into a random drainage tunnel or if this was an entrance to an underground network where he'd been hiding all along.

Edit:
And something about a NATO air-strike hitting the convoy. I think if they're trying to make their point that "leading from behind" is an easier way to go about it than putting boots on the ground, we'll hear less and less of that detail.

TomAz
10-20-2011, 08:46 AM
I think that's right. There's also the convoy that his son was in today, trying to escape town, that was surrounded by anti-Qaddafi forces and which may have been the target of a NATO airstrike as well.

BBC.co.uk seems to have as good a handle as anyone on this that I can tell.

TomAz

The other thing I don't understand is that they're saying his body is now in Misrata. according to google that's 250km from Sirte. sure seemed to get there pretty fast.

weeklymix
10-20-2011, 08:51 AM
Well the first picture leaked about thirty min to an hour before I created this thread. 4 - 5 hrs for that distance isn't too unreasonable and that's permitting the pictures were being leaked at least somewhere near the time they were taken. The claims that his body is in Misrata are much more recent reports. He was apparently thrown in an ambulance of sorts and taken to Misrata after he was killed.

You guys need to watch the documentary "Collapse" or many of the other oil crisis documentaries on Netflix. Prices at the pump are all about supply & demand and the horrific fact of pleak oil production. We've exhausted just about all of our peak oil pumping around the world. We are on a decline in production. The only way to get it now is going to be conquering countries that have some resources left one at a time.

For two months in Iraq cash we could just throw some ultra covert aid to the people of Syria, Iran, and Pakistan. Grab popcorn. Profit. Time for the CIA and foreign covert forces to be men again.

The former dictator was known for his vanity--in March, a Brazilian plastic surgeon came forward with an account of a four hour cosmetic procedure he'd performed on Gadhafi in 1995. "He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man," Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro told the AP. "I recommended a facelift, but he refused." Gadhafi received hair plugs and had fat from his belly injected into his face to counteract the appearance of aging. The operation occurred in the middle of the night in Gadhafi's compound in Tripoli. He insisted on local anesthesia, so he could remain awake during the procedure; midway through the surgery, he paused to snack on a hamburger.

So they didn't exactly rush Mo-mo to aid after shooting him... And they took photos with his corpse... Was it macabre of the rebels? Yes. I would call it a War Misdemeanor and charge them with the community service of rebuilding Libya for the benefit of everybody.

I mean, yes. Exactly. The video of the fatal shot, if it exists, will never see the light of day now.

All the reports said they had loaded him up in an ambulance and taken him to Misrata. They probably did blow his brains out once they got there because his corpse in a new video inside a refrigeration unit clearly shows they cleaned him up. They were probably instructed by intelligence to make it look like they tried.

You can't humiliate, torture or murder detainees under the Geneva conventions. From what I've seen of Gadaffi's unseemly demise, it covers all three bases.

There was never any doubt of what was going to become of Gadaffi, but the extrajudicial execution of a detainee in your care is a war crime and it's that simple. Japanese soldiers were tried and convicted for exactly that. It's not like somebody spitting in a douchey customer's burger, you can't pretend it didn't happen just because the guy was an arsehole.

Plenty of nations don't respect the conventions - the US included - but it remains the best benchmark we have to protect prisoners of war on all sides, and we could do without chipping away at it any further.

I'm not under any illusions about rebels being charged.

I'm just saying, a warcrime against an asshole is still a warcrime, and it's silly to be surprised when the guys in charge of pointing out warcrimes go "Yeah, that's pretty much a warcrime."

If it was narrow officials in the United States would have stood trial for torture and illegal detaining by now.

Alchemy

But don't people do call what the US have done warcrimes? It's a system that identifies things, and that's how it is narrow. I don't mean that it's a successful narrow system.

Yes, the US has gotten away with a bunch of warcrimes in its current conflicts. And yes, there are lots of US officials who should have stood trial for torture and illegal detention by now, and probably never will. It's good to be king.

But the point of the thing is that it's supposed to be reciprocal, soldiers are supposed to know that when they pull on the uniform in the morning, they're protected by the conventions.

You could talk about how the nature of conflict in Afghanistan in particular has changed the landscape in that regard, but there are still enough places on earth where uniforms are pointed at uniforms for it to matter. When people negotiate over prisoners of war or appeal for international help against some evil invader, they use the conventions to do so. It's an imperfect system of course, but it doesn't get any stronger whenever somebody suspends it at their own convenience.

Nobody in the UN said or at least officially stated the US committed war crimes. If you can find a statement from the UN that the United States and its leaders should be probed for war crime investigations let me know. Human Rights advocates called for a bunch of shit but it was never the UN.

And I'm not saying the US would be found guilty. Opinions or beliefs aside, we weren't even investigated or formally called out by the UN. That's a backward system. "We can investigate untrained rebels with no money or formal structure for executing an oppressive dictator but we don't want to piss off anybody with clout." That's the message they send. It's a joke.

There are quotes from Geneva insiders and their affiliates that SOME DAY MAYBE an investigation or case will be taken up against the United States but the day following the death of a brutal dictator an investigation is immediately urged by the UN? It's pointless. Bush was scheduled for a trip to Switzerland and when he found out it might be possible for a case to be brought up against him and be detained, he canceled. It's just a fucking joke.

Edit:
I stand mildly corrected. To be fair one person in the UN said in 2009 Bush should be investigated but by us personally since he was no longer our head of state. He only made this announcement or statement on German television. It wasn't held as a view overall by any UN council and it was just let go as an attack on Bush and Rumsfeld and certainly wasn't brought up by the UN while these crimes were being committed. So any day now we should be charging Bush with war crimes. Good luck with that.

I'm not trying to be douche, but I'm a little confused; do you want the UN to be more or less vocal on the subject overall?

Seems there is more video of Gaddafi sodomized and tortured. It is easy to be appalled when you are not a victim of Gaddafi's regime.
My concern is that Libya doesn't descend in to a climate of retribution and vengeance. My grandfather served in WWII and was horrified when Italy was liberated, that the locals began rounding up local collaborators and traitors. Many were executed or abused on the basis of someone's word with no trial or defense. However, even my grandfather had no compassion for the SS.

The article on that site lists the sodomizing acts as "attempts." It's plenty believable thinking some crazy rebel just tried sticking stuff up the guy's butt as they were walking him out. It doesn't look like they bent him over and forced a ton of stuff in his rectum by any means.
