"Back to the Future"-branded self-tying Nike sneakers are finally on their way

http://www.ifc.com/news/assets_c/090811_backtothefuture_shoes.jpg

The shoemaker listens to the fans and goes retro futuristic.

Listen, about the hoverboards: It's just not going to happen. No matter how many jokey comments you make on Facebook and Twitter about only having four years left to get the "Back to the Future" toys into production, the fact remains that those things are physically impossible and don't even work on water. But while you won't be getting your hands on a hoverboard any time soon (or ever, most likely), you can still kick it like McFly with some Nike Mag high-tops.

The news broke over the course of the day yesterday, with Slashfilm covering the entire affair. Speculation kicked off when "Back to the Future" producer Frank Marshall started hyping a "Back to the Future" announcement on Twitter. Then, TechCrunch revealed that Nike was holding an event in LA tonight and was hinting at the existence of the Nike Air Mags.

In the original "Back to the Future Part II," the Mags would automatically tighten themselves around your foot, in addition to looking exactly like what someone in 1985 would expect 2015 sneakers to look like. Apparently, Nike finally broke the code on how to make sneakers tighten themselves up, and patented the technology last year.

Unfortunately, there's no word yet on where you can actually get the Nike Air Mags, how much they'll cost or even how the hell they work. But while you start pegging your jeans to properly show off the new kicks, you can get an early look at them with the video below:

Last night we reported on a exclusive Nike press conference taking place in West Covina, Calif., and the company just confirmed the future is now: Marty McFly's signature shoe from the "Back to the Future" series, code-named the Nike Air Mag, will become a reality starting tonight at 8:30 p.m. PT.

The Air Mag shoes are a near identical replica to the original models worn by Michael J. Fox in the sequel to "Back to the Future," and represent the first pair of rechargeable sneakers from Nike.
Consistency with the original design exists across the shoe, from the upper contours to the glowing Nike emblem, but they don't feature power laces, contrary to early speculation.
Mark Parker, CEO of Nike, announced plans to auction off 1,500 pairs of the Air Mag aka "Marty McFly" shoe on eBay's Fashion Vault starting tonight at 8:30 p.m., with all net proceeds funneling directly into the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research.
For the duration of the 10-day auction, Nike will auction off 150 of the shoes until all 1,500 pairs are sold.
"We wanted to translate the excitement people have for the 'greatest shoe never made' and for the 'Back to the Future' into positive action," said Parker. "But the long-term objective is to raise awareness so the Foundation can achieve their goal of eradicating Parkinson's disease."
Michael J. Fox himself will appear on "The Late Show With David Letterman" tonight to show off the sneakers up close.
Stay tuned after the jump for more photos of the Nike Air Mag 2011.

um wait shit. no way any of us are getting them
The NIKE MAG is no longer the "greatest shoe never made." The mythical shoe that originally captured the imagination of audiences in Back to the Future II is being released -- and they're here to help create a future without Parkinson's disease.

1500 pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG will be auctioned on eBay with all net proceeds going directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Each day for the duration of the ten-day auction, one hundred and fifty pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG shoes will be made available via eBay's Fashion Vault. The auction starts September 8, 8:30PM PST, and will end September 18. Thanks to a previous 50 million dollar match given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, all donations will be matched, effectively doubling the contributions from the auction.

I like your attitude towards the people in your own backyard who made these shoes and want to give back to medical research.

The odds are just as bad for him as they are for you and I. I doubt that asshole or any of his cronies know how to operate an ebay account properly nonetheless know to not underestimate the thousands of thousands within the collectors shoe market who will lay down $10,000 with no hesitation just to say they have a pair of these in their collection. Being outbid on these is a promise. And there is absolutely no hope in acquiring these through other means at this moment other than ebay. If 'weezy' thinks he can waltz up to oregon tomorrow with an oversized 25 grand golf check made out to the NPF just to insure a spot on the list, he has another thing coming. There is absolutely no other way to acquire these other than ebay. Unless 'weezy' can furnish the cure to parkinsons himself, he will be buying his pairs second hand.

Yeah, it would be impossible for him to offer one of the winners a ridiculous amount of money for a pair. Great analysis. I mean, how would he ever find out who they are? How would he ever be able to make it known he wanted a pair? How could he ever afford it!!

They made it so that you have to contact the seller so they would authorize you to bid. They check your feedback and whatnot and probably make sure you can make the payment. And theres no point in shill bidding this.

Agreed, i'm sure his management has already approached nike to purchase a pair out of auction separately and was in turn shown the door after failing to read the rules on the INTERNET that states that no outside offers will be entertained or considered(he's on their payroll so I would assume with good certainty that hes tried). and he's represented by bryant mgmt, a skyscraper of 'talent' thats only tenant is 75 stories of total bullshit thats on perpetual autotune. I'm going to stop giving a shit about 'weezy' after this post, if theres one 'musician' who should be on stage during a complete structural failure, its him...
